The word “archive” may usually conjure images of dusty boxes, white gloves and hushed silences. But a growing number of artists are finding that underneath the layers of protective paper there’s rich source material.
“Archives are like time travel,” says Désirée Reynolds, an artist in residence at Sheffield City Archives, who has been burrowing into the thousands of items in the northern city’s annals in search of black history since 2021.

My family and I stayed in a Spanish property booked on Vrbo that was blatantly different to the listing. Instead of the three bedrooms advertised, there was only one, accessible via an outdoor stone staircase. The listing also failed to mention that the bathroom was outside as well. Neither of the rooms had heating. To reach the toilet at night involved going down the flight of steps. Since it was raining during our stay, they were slippery and treacherous and we got very wet. Moreover, frequent power failures left us without running water, heating or wifi. We had paid £1,009 for the week, but it was so miserable we decamped to another house at an additional cost of £574 after three days.
Vrbo’s complaints process is impossible to navigate. You are repeatedly transferred to people in different teams and have to start from square one each time. So far, I have spent six hours on the phone to them. I feel its process is not designed to actually solve customer problems, but merely to wear people out so that they are forced to make their own arrangements, which then allows Vrbo to argue that they wouldn’t accept help.

Air pollution exposure can significantly decrease the chance of a live birth after IVF treatment, according to research that deepens concern about the health impacts of toxic air on fertility.
Pollutant exposure has previously been linked to increased miscarriage rates and preterm births, and microscopic soot particles have been shown to travel through the bloodstream into the ovaries and the placenta. The latest work suggests that the impact of pollution begins before conception by disrupting the development of eggs.

The US president is still in denial about his ability to take on Donald Trump, but his party is not
Joe Biden says only “the Lord almighty” could make him quit his re-election bid. “I am not going anywhere,” he insisted in a surprise call to a morning talkshow on Monday, having warned party colleagues off further discussion in a letter. Anyone wanting him to step aside, he said, should “challenge me at the convention” in August. Perhaps he would better understand the problem if he had watched his disastrous debate appearance. But if the president is still in denial, far fewer lawmakers, donors and supporters believe that his candidacy is sustainable amid mounting concern about his capabilities.
Resilience is a virtue. Mr Biden has shown it in spades, and it has served him and his country well. His grit and application helped to save the United States from a second Trump term, and to recover from the first. But knowing when to quit matters too. In 2020, Mr Biden described himself as the “bridge” to a new generation of leaders. Stepping aside now would be a belated act of dignity and wisdom. Clinging on as the Democrats head towards November in a doom‑spiral of division and recrimination, leading to Donald Trump’s return to the White House, would for ever tarnish his name.

The president lashed out at “elites in the party” in a live telephone interview with the MSNBC show Morning Joe, saying he said they were behind calls for him to quit. The Texas governor, Greg Abbott, is receiving criticism from some online for posting about a business meeting in South Korea as Texas deals with extreme weather from Hurricane Beryl, the Houston Chronicle reported.

While those on the Texas Gulf Coast awoke to the effects of Hurricane Beryl on Monday morning, Texas Governor Greg Abbott posted about a business meeting he had on his trip through Asia.

France has no political culture of making coalitions and compromises, like Germany or Italy. That is why it feels like a crisis for the French.
Much depends on whether the NFP will stay united and not break up into old conflicts.
This would be very unpopular and may trigger protests because he [Macron] clearly lost the election.
With his self-confidence he will probably stay on as president until 2027. In other countries, the head of state would resign after such a defeat. With this defeat, he lacks the legitimacy to appoint a new government.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy vowed retaliation as he said Kyiv’s Okhmatdyt hospital, the main treatment centre in the country for children with cancer, had taken a direct missile hit. The strike was part of one of the heaviest attacks on the capital since Russia’s February 2022 invasion.

Had the UK economy grown at the average rate of OECD economies since 2010, it would have been over £140bn larger.

For much of the last week of the election campaign, Rishi Sunak chose to portray Keir Starmer as something of a slacker. A man who would allow a country to invade the UK if it interrupted his Friday night TV schedule. As for weekends, you could forget it. A write-off. Keir needed his lie-ins and his phone would be switched off. Call back on Monday after 9.30am.
On the basis of the last 72 hours, the Tories should have taken a leaf out of the new prime minister’s book. Because it turns out that Keir can get a lot done while he’s in bed. Or when he’s sleepwalking. The somnambulist’s somnambulist. Some might even argue he’s achieved more in three days than the Tories managed in the last 18 months.

Confronted with its biggest test since the second world war, France’s republican front magnificently, defiantly held the line. More than 200 candidates from the left and centre withdrew from Sunday’s second round of legislative elections to allow better-placed rivals a free run against Marine Le Pen’s radical right. Their sacrifice was rewarded beyond anyone’s expectations. Having won the first round with a vote share that suggested an absolute majority was within reach, Ms Le Pen’s National Rally party (RN) slumped to third place.
In an era when the rise of rightwing nationalism has coincided with declining trust in mainstream politics, this is an outcome to celebrate. Emmanuel Macron’s reckless election allowed RN to substantially bolster its number of MPs. But a high turnout across France led to millions of voters burying very real differences to join forces against it. They did so in order to see off a party whose xenophobic core is at odds with republican values of equality and inclusion. The RN’s plans to bar dual nationals from sensitive state jobs proved to be a political liability, not an asset. So did an array of candidates whose racist views and pro‑Putin sympathies, when uncovered on social media, inspired widespread revulsion.

After 14 years of Conservative dominance, Britain has ushered in a new era of politics: record-breaking losses for the Conservative party, Keir Starmer’s whooping victory, the wipeout of the Scottish National party (SNP), growth for the Liberal Democrats and the return of Nigel Farage. But across the water lies another electoral earthquake that has utterly rearranged the political landscape of Northern Ireland: the fall of the house of Paisley.
With only 18 Westminster seats, Northern Ireland was low on the political agenda during the snap election – that is, until news began swirling of a shock loss in North Antrim for the Democratic Unionist party (DUP). North Antrim was considered the party’s safest seat. This was not only a unionist heartland but also Paisley-land. The seat has been held by a member of the Paisley family for 54 years – won by DUP founder Rev Ian Paisley in 1970 and held by his son Ian Paisley Jr since 2010. The loss of North Antrim by 450 votes ended the Paisley dynasty and has raised questions about the future not only of the DUP but also of unionism itself.

Winning the election was almost easy compared with the next task Keir Starmer has set himself. “The fight for trust is the battle that defines our age,” he has said, and it will define him. Fail, and he risks the rampant right and the righteous Greens and Liberal Democrats devouring his huge majority. The country purged the most corrupt and decadent government of modern times, but Labour’s victory was almost a byproduct of that vengeful impulse. How do you reclaim trust that is so lost that politics has never been held in such low repute?
Everyone knows the reasons why deep cynicism greets doorknocking MPs. Examples of Westminster venality, bribery, bullying, sexual and financial disgrace are too many to list, too wearily familiar to need recounting. That odour of pocket-lining self-interest was extra-shocking in a government stripping down public services while voters struggled to get by. Unjustly, people often make little distinction between the parties. That’s the mood Starmer confronts. Britons are among the least trusting of their politicians in the western world, with trust at a record low thanks in part to anger over Partygate lies. Nearly 80% are dissatisfied with how Britain is governed.

Dr Stephen Riley (Letters, 5 July) succinctly outlines the success of the Tories in providing for the elite they represent by redistributing wealth from the poor to the rich. I awoke on 5 July to a new dawn here in north Herefordshire: a Green party MP and a Labour government. After breathing a sigh of relief, I am filled with hope and joy because we’ve been left to live in a wasteland for far too long; disrespected, insulted, robbed, unloved and, many of us, destitute.
Paying taxes is joyful if the NHS is there for us, if everyone has the right to a home, a good education, transport, food and heating. This is what we need, not just for ourselves but for all our neighbours. If our new political leaders prioritise our wellbeing and the sustainability of the planet above profit, and they make a contribution to world peace, then this new beginning is really something to celebrate.

It’s impossible not to congratulate the Labour party on its historic victory. Keir Starmer has taken his party on a journey back into government. He has brought Labour back from the fringes of British politics and made it a mainstream party that has gained a huge electoral majority from all parts of our country. When I was appointed education secretary in 2016, I was the first person in the job to have been educated at a comprehensive school. It is welcome to see a cabinet where state-educated ministers are finally the norm, not the exception. When the nation’s decision-makers have shared the lived experience of the vast majority of the population, this surely makes for a stronger, better and fairer government. Everyone in the country should wish Labour well with their mission to break down barriers to opportunity.
As for the Conservative party? It would be naive for anyone to think that things can only get better. The last few days have been marked by the depressingly predictable appearances of Suella Braverman and David Frost, in a political equivalent of Return of the Living Dead. Frost, a man who may well have never won a raffle let alone an election, and Braverman, a politician so inept she thought it was a good idea to write an article attacking her own party in the final 48 hours before voters went to the polls, are among those vying to determine the future of the Conservatives.

More than 400,000 people may have been prevented from voting in the general election because they lacked the necessary ID, with those from minority ethnic communities more than twice as likely to have experienced this, polling has suggested.
Of those surveyed by More In Common, 3.2% said they were turned away at least once last Thursday, which if reflected across the UK would equate to more than 850,000 people. Of these, more than half said they either did not return or came back and were still unable to vote.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is being investigated by the environmental watchdog after Conservative ministers authorised a bee-killing pesticide that was banned by the EU.
The investigation into Defra was launched after the campaign group ClientEarth submitted a complaint to the Office for Environmental Protection, which was set up after Brexit to replace the EU’s framework for punishing environmental offences by governments in the bloc. William Davies’ article on the plight of universities struck a chord (How the Tories pushed universities to the brink of disaster, 2 July). But he underplays how culpable the last decade of university managers have been, and how damaging and dated their response is now.
Universities and their staff face the same problems, derived from the same causes, but – as Davies points out – university management embraced tuition fees and the marketisation of higher education while staff protested against them. Now universities have at last recognised that the funding system is beyond repair. Faced with a sector meltdown that should see unions, staff and management collectively embracing a new hymn sheet, universities are falling back on the same old, same old: redundancy schemes accompanied by restructurings and efficiency drives that have a whiff of rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic.

With his self-confidence he will probably stay on as president until 2027. In other countries, the head of state would resign after such a defeat. With this defeat, he lacks the legitimacy to appoint a new government.

The two-round majority electoral system was designed to avoid political instability and contain the extremes. The system failed to achieve the first, with a new hung parliament divided into three comparable groups that will keep any government that is formed under constant threat of no-confidence votes. It only partially succeeded on the second; stopping the far-right National Rally (RN) from taking power, but not preventing its exponential growth in parliamentary seats from eight to more than 120 between 2017 and 2024.

Back in the day, all eyes were on “Blair’s Babes”, a deeply considered epithet for an influx of Labour women, many of whom were actually older than the prime minister, but that didn’t matter. All it took was a babe or two, for “Babe” to be used to describe the collective. It wouldn’t happen today, so I guess we could call that progress.

France has dodged a bullet. We have no idea how the country will be governed in the coming months with a hung parliament without any natural majority. But at least we know who won’t be in government for now, and that is an immense relief for millions of voters.
If the first round of this snap parliamentary election was a referendum against liberal centrist President Emmanuel Macron, the second round was a referendum against Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN), just when power appeared within the grasp of the far-right party.

In the early hours of 30 June 1966 a fire swept through the home of the managing director of a miso maker in Shizuoka, central Japan. After the fire was put out, police found the bodies of the executive, his wife, and their two teenage children. They had all been stabbed to death.
Iwao Hakamada, who had worked for the firm as a live-in employee, was arrested on suspicion of murdering the family, setting fire to their home and stealing 200,000 yen (£973) in cash. Two years later he was found guilty of murder and arson and sentenced to hang. He maintained innocence throughout his 45 years awaiting execution – the longest any prisoner worldwide has spent on death row.

Canva is a free graphic design web application that allows you to create invitations, business cards, flyers, lesson plans, banners, and more using professionally designed templates. You can upload your own photos from your computer or from Google Drive, and add them to Canva's templates using a simple drag-and-drop interface. It's like having a basic version of Photoshop that doesn't require Graphic designing knowledge to use. It’s best for nongraphic designers.
Canva is a great tool for small business owners, online entrepreneurs, and marketers who don’t have the time and want to edit quickly.
To create sophisticated graphics, a tool such as Photoshop can is ideal. To use it, you’ll need to learn its hundreds of features, get familiar with the software, and it’s best to have a good background in design, too.
Also running the latest version of Photoshop you need a high-end computer.
So here Canva takes place, with Canva you can do all that with drag-and-drop feature. It’s also easier to use and free. Also an even-more-affordable paid version is available for $12.95 per month.
The product is available in three plans: Free, Pro ($12.99/month per user or $119.99/year for up to 5 people), and Enterprise ($30 per user per month, minimum 25 people).
To get started on Canva, you will need to create an account by providing your email address, Google, Facebook or Apple credentials. You will then choose your account type between student, teacher, small business, large company, non-profit, or personal. Based on your choice of account type, templates will be recommended to you.
You can sign up for a free trial of Canva Pro, or you can start with the free version to get a sense of whether it’s the right graphic design tool for your needs.
When you sign up for an account, Canva will suggest different post types to choose from. Based on the type of account you set up you'll be able to see templates categorized by the following categories: social media posts, documents, presentations, marketing, events, ads, launch your business, build your online brand, etc.
Start by choosing a template for your post or searching for something more specific. Search by social network name to see a list of post types on each network.
Next, you can choose a template. Choose from hundreds of templates that are ready to go, with customizable photos, text, and other elements.
You can start your design by choosing from a variety of ready-made templates, searching for a template matching your needs, or working with a blank template.
Inside the Canva designer, the Elements tab gives you access to lines and shapes, graphics, photos, videos, audio, charts, photo frames, and photo grids.The search box on the Elements tab lets you search everything on Canva.
To begin with, Canva has a large library of elements to choose from. To find them, be specific in your search query. You may also want to search in the following tabs to see various elements separately:
The Photos tab lets you search for and choose from millions of professional stock photos for your templates.
You can replace the photos in our templates to create a new look. This can also make the template more suited to your industry.
You can find photos on other stock photography sites like pexel, pixabay and many more or simply upload your own photos.
When you choose an image, Canva’s photo editing features let you adjust the photo’s settings (brightness, contrast, saturation, etc.), crop, or animate it.
When you subscribe to Canva Pro, you get access to a number of premium features, including the Background Remover. This feature allows you to remove the background from any stock photo in library or any image you upload.
The Text tab lets you add headings, normal text, and graphical text to your design.
When you click on text, you'll see options to adjust the font, font size, color, format, spacing, and text effects (like shadows).
Canva Pro subscribers can choose from a large library of fonts on the Brand Kit or the Styles tab. Enterprise-level controls ensure that visual content remains on-brand, no matter how many people are working on it.
Create an animated image or video by adding audio to capture user’s attention in social news feeds.
If you want to use audio from another stock site or your own audio tracks, you can upload them in the Uploads tab or from the more option.
Want to create your own videos? Choose from thousands of stock video clips. You’ll find videos that range upto 2 minutes
You can upload your own videos as well as videos from other stock sites in the Uploads tab.
Once you have chosen a video, you can use the editing features in Canva to trim the video, flip it, and adjust its transparency.
On the Background tab, you’ll find free stock photos to serve as backgrounds on your designs. Change out the background on a template to give it a more personal touch.
The Styles tab lets you quickly change the look and feel of your template with just a click. And if you have a Canva Pro subscription, you can upload your brand’s custom colors and fonts to ensure designs stay on brand.
If you have a Canva Pro subscription, you’ll have a Logos tab. Here, you can upload variations of your brand logo to use throughout your designs.
With Canva, you can also create your own logos. Note that you cannot trademark a logo with stock content in it.
With Canva, free users can download and share designs to multiple platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Slack and Tumblr.
Canva Pro subscribers can create multiple post formats from one design. For example, you can start by designing an Instagram post, and Canva's Magic Resizer can resize it for other networks, Stories, Reels, and other formats.
Canva Pro subscribers can also use Canva’s Content Planner to post content on eight different accounts on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Slack, and Tumblr.

In general, Canva is an excellent tool for those who need simple images for projects. If you are a graphic designer with experience, you will find Canva’s platform lacking in customization and advanced features – particularly vectors. But if you have little design experience, you will find Canva easier to use than advanced graphic design tools like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator for most projects. Team GB’s athletes will be part of the “most sophisticated high-performance system in the world, bar none” at the Paris Olympics and could win a record-breaking tally of medals. That was the message from UK Sport and the British Olympic Association on Monday as they confirmed that Team GB would send 327 athletes in 24 sports to France. Notably, there will be significantly more women (174) than men (153) for the second Games in a row.
UK Sport has set a broad medal range of 50-70 medalsas it aims to be top-five in the medal table yet again. However, its director of performance, Kate Baker, predicted that if all went well, Britain could eclipse the record 67 medals won at the 2016 Rio Games.

Imagine a world in which you can do transactions and many other things without having to give your personal information. A world in which you don’t need to rely on banks or governments anymore. Sounds amazing, right? That’s exactly what blockchain technology allows us to do.
It’s like your computer’s hard drive. blockchain is a technology that lets you store data in digital blocks, which are connected together like links in a chain.
Blockchain technology was originally invented in 1991 by two mathematicians, Stuart Haber and W. Scot Stornetta. They first proposed the system to ensure that timestamps could not be tampered with.
A few years later, in 1998, software developer Nick Szabo proposed using a similar kind of technology to secure a digital payments system he called “Bit Gold.” However, this innovation was not adopted until Satoshi Nakamoto claimed to have invented the first Blockchain and Bitcoin.
A blockchain is a distributed database shared between the nodes of a computer network. It saves information in digital format. Many people first heard of blockchain technology when they started to look up information about bitcoin.
Blockchain is used in cryptocurrency systems to ensure secure, decentralized records of transactions.
Blockchain allowed people to guarantee the fidelity and security of a record of data without the need for a third party to ensure accuracy.

The information is distributed among many users and stored in an immutable, permanent ledger that can't be changed or destroyed. Even though blockchain is integral to cryptocurrency, it has other applications. For example, blockchain can be used for storing reliable data about transactions. Many people confuse blockchain with cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ethereum.
Blockchain already being adopted by some big-name companies, such as Walmart, AIG, Siemens, Pfizer, and Unilever. For example, IBM's Food Trust uses blockchain to track food's journey before reaching its final destination.
Although some of you may consider this practice excessive, food suppliers and manufacturers adhere to the policy of tracing their products because bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella have been found in packaged foods. In addition, there have been isolated cases where dangerous allergens such as peanuts have accidentally been introduced into certain products.
Tracing and identifying the sources of an outbreak is a challenging task that can take months or years. Thanks to the Blockchain, however, companies now know exactly where their food has been—so they can trace its location and prevent future outbreaks.
Blockchain technology allows systems to react much faster in the event of a hazard. It also has many other uses in the modern world.

This is a maximum security facility and you’re talking about wanting me to run around with tights talking about to be and not to be? Stop playing.” Johnson first got caught up in the punitive US carceral system at 15, as a wayward youth in Queens. At Sing Sing, he was a man of few words, a self-proclaimed “block monster”. “I couldn’t communicate too effectively,” he said. “And when I ran out of vocabulary, violence was the only thing I knew and leaned on.”
Johnson had no theater experience, but the program, called Rehabilitation through the Arts (RTA), piqued his interest. He went to the first meeting to check it out, do props, find “something to do other than sitting around this yard and counting time”. He started reading a script for a new play and, to his surprise, enjoyed it. He kept reading. He brought the script back to his cell, went to another reading, even began looking forward to them. “It just started changing my thinking, like, ‘nah, I can’t get into trouble. Then I won’t be able to go down and be able to read,’” he said. Before RTA, Johnson had “very little to say, because every time I open my mouth, people take it the wrong way and it leads to something else.
