South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham added his voice on Sunday to a chorus calling for cognitive and physical evaluations for Joe Biden – but also called for the same for Donald Trump and others.
The Republican lawmaker recommended such tests for all future presidential nominees as well as those who may take over from a president or a nominee.

The sewage crisis was a significant factor in the Tories’ losing support in the “blue wall” in the south of England, electoral polling suggests.
Seven out of 10 voters supported legal measures to eliminate sewage spills in ecologically sensitive areas by 2030, according to polling conducted for Greenpeace by Survation just before the election. Less than a third of voters thought the Conservatives were right to weaken their commitments on the climate crisis and the environment.

To find optimism, I often go to Milton Keynes – and if that triggers a smirk, it is probably proof that you have never been there. Long known as England’s pre-eminent new town, it was granted city status two years ago, which matched not just its size and diversity but a modern optimism that you do not have to try hard to find. For sure, it has problems with poverty, inequality and homelessness. But it also pulses with a fascinating sense of the future.
On election day I was in one of Milton Keynes’s more deprived neighbourhoods, talking to people as they came in and out of the local polling station. And at about 4pm I spoke to Sandra, a young woman who had just finished her A-levels and was voting for the first time. What, I wondered, had she been thinking about as she decided who to support. “Workers’ rights, jobs, education, not serving in the army like Mr Sunak wants,” she said.

Just as in the movie Sliding Doors, there are two endings to the story that began on Thursday with Labour’s victory in the 2024 election. One is happy, one is sad, and either is possible. What happens to the economy over the next five years will determine which one materialises.
Let’s start with the happy ending: the one where the credits roll as Keir Starmer wins big for a second time in 2029. The script for that one starts slowly. The scale of Labour’s win means it doesn’t have to rush things but has time to put in place the supply-side reforms, such as changes to planning rules, that will boost growth. Structural changes don’t bear fruit overnight but by the early 2030s it should be possible to notice the difference.

David Lammy likes to tell a story about sitting at his kitchen table with Sir Keir Starmer shortly after Labour’s cataclysmic defeat at the 2019 election. Having ascertained that the other man intended to run for leader, Mr Lammy cautioned him that hauling Labour out of the abyss and back into contention for power would be “a 10-year project”. “No,” came the sharp response from Sir Keir. “I’m going to do it in five.”
Was he truly convinced that he had it in him to pull off what everyone else regarded as mission impossible? Or did he have to tell himself this because he knew he’d probably only get one crack at Number 10? As it turns out, he’s taken his party from its most abject defeat since 1935 to a landslide victory, and pulled off that remarkable feat in a bit under five years, to become the 58th prime minister in our history and only the fourth Labour one to secure a parliamentary majority.

For a couple of minutes after the exit poll on Thursday night, nobody said a thing. About a dozen of Keir Starmer’s closest and longest-serving aides assembled at the back of the living room, turned and hugged each other. Some sobbed as aching exhaustion mixed with relief and joy.
Even more powerful feelings were on display in front of them. Starmer and his wife, Vic, along with their two teenage children, were lined up on the sofa watching the television almost like they were recreating the opening of the cartoon series The Simpsons. They tried to show they were relaxed in this upmarket house Starmer had borrowed from a friend. Their son wore his Arsenal shirt and their daughter, who has told him she has no intention of moving to Downing Street, gave everyone an excuse to laugh for a moment by letting out a long “Ewww” when her dad’s face appeared on the screen.

Tax officials are under pressure this weekend to publish estimated figures on offshore tax avoidance by some of the country’s wealthiest individuals after withholding the information in a report published during the election campaign.
In June 2022, Lucy Frazer, then financial secretary to the Treasury, pledged that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) would publish figures on the offshore tax gap, but the release of the figures has been repeatedly delayed. An HMRC report published on 20 June this year – four weeks after the election was called – estimated the tax gap to be £39.8bn for the 2022-23 tax year. The tax gap is the difference between the amount of tax that should be collected and what has actually been paid.

This opinion might sum up the aura of sunny optimism that surrounds one of the country’s most versatile and successful writers, who made the comment on publication of his own most recent novel for children, Noah’s Gold. But to insist that humanity is not innately bad is not to deny that urgent work is needed to enable it to release its potential. And the project starts with reading, said Mr Cottrell-Boyce at his investiture in Leeds. It means addressing the invisible privilege and inequality which give some children a bright future that is unimaginable to others.

We desperately need a higher level of debate on Russian imperialism than that provided by George Monbiot (I never thought I’d argue for rearmament. But a looming Trump presidency changes everything, 4 July). I accept that there are reasoned arguments for supporting Ukraine’s anti-colonial resistance. But increasing Britain’s conventional arms in order to “support other European nations” and “perhaps to defend ourselves”? The evidence that Russia might attack or invade European countries is feeble.
Russia is in no position to take on Nato. According to the Royal United Services Institute, Russia faces “increasing material challenges” with maintaining its defence industry and military operations just in Ukraine, and is only doing so right now by avoiding large-scale troop offensives and by taking inferior tanks and degraded ammunition out of storage.

The grownups are back in Westminster. The Tory psychodramas inside No 10 have been replaced by a serious Labour government focused on delivery. It’s going to take time for all of us to make the adjustment. Except, time is the one thing Keir Starmer is not going to allow his new cabinet. He knows that the only way to win over those who didn’t vote for him last Thursday is to make an immediate difference. These days even a landslide majority is no guarantee of a second term.
Even so, Jonathan Reynolds, the new business and trade secretary, would probably have liked more than 40 or so hours to get his feet under the desk before being sent out on to the Sunday morning politics shows. I mean, he probably hasn’t even worked out where the nearest toilet is in his department yet.

The Harland & Wolff (H&W) shipyard in Belfast is famous for having built the Titanic, the largest passenger ship of its time before it hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage across the Atlantic. But things have moved on since 1912. In recent weeks Samson, one of the two yellow gantry cranes that dominate Belfast’s skyline, has been straddling a giant oil processing vessel.
This is the Canadian-owned SeaRose, which is being upgraded by H&W in a contract worth more than £90m. The SeaRose is even larger than the Titanic, weighing in at 150,000 tonnes. The sight of a massive ship in Belfast harbour recalls the city’s glory days as a shipbuilding superpower. H&W collapsed into administration in 2019, but now the shipyard is back at the centre of British hopes to restore something of the industry’s past glories.

Three years ago, around this time as summer came with its wasps and heat, I wrote about the return of sex. We were just leaving lockdown – do you remember those days? Of hope and fear, when we had spent many months considering things like the importance and nuance of touch, the mysteries that were other people, the many conflicting facts of a strange, warm body? The adult world was preparing to step feverishly out of its house into the arms, beds and cars of other people, soft and diabolically gorgeous in a way only a pandemic really allows; their minds were dirty though their hands had never been so clean. And then, well, nothing.
As this summer finally arrives and we drag our bare legs through the thick yellow air, newspapers all over the world are breathlessly reporting the rise of celibacy. Protests aimed at pressuring the Israeli government to reach a hostage deal with Hamas began across Israel on Sunday, with demonstrators blocking roads and picketing at the homes of government ministers. The demonstrators took to the streets, blocking rush hour traffic at major intersections across the country. They briefly set fire to tires on the main Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway before police cleared the way. Another Palestinian official, with knowledge of the ongoing ceasefire deliberations, said Israel was in talks with the Qataris. “They have discussed with them Hamas’ response and they promised to give them Israel’s response within days,” the official told Reuters on Sunday. Israel’s government made no immediate comment on the timing of its deliberations.
In Gaza, Palestinian health officials said at least 15 people were killed in separate Israeli military strikes on Sunday. An Israeli airstrike on a house in the town of Zawayda, in central Gaza, killed at least six people and wounded several others, while six others were killed in an airstrike on a house in western Gaza, the health officials said. Tanks deepened their raids in central and northern areas of Rafah on the southern border with Egypt. Health officials there said they had recovered three bodies of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in the eastern part of the city.
Hamas is waiting for a response from Israel on its ceasefire proposal, two officials from the Palestinian group said on Sunday. This comes five days after it accepted a key part of a U.S. plan aimed at ending the nine-month war in Gaza. “We have left our response with the mediators and are waiting to hear the occupation’s response,” one of the two Hamas officials told Reuters, asking not to be named.
Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement fired another 20 rockets at northern Israel, leaving one person injured there, the latest cross-border attacks launched in solidarity with Gaza’s Palestinian militant group Hamas. Hezbollah said that “in response to the attack and assassination that the Israeli enemy carried out”, it had targeted “one of the main bases” in northern Israel, west of Tiberias, with “dozens of Katyusha rockets”.

When you subscribe to Canva Pro, you get access to a number of premium features, including the Background Remover. This feature allows you to remove the background from any stock photo in library or any image you upload.
The Text tab lets you add headings, normal text, and graphical text to your design.
When you click on text, you'll see options to adjust the font, font size, color, format, spacing, and text effects (like shadows).
Canva Pro subscribers can choose from a large library of fonts on the Brand Kit or the Styles tab. Enterprise-level controls ensure that visual content remains on-brand, no matter how many people are working on it.
Create an animated image or video by adding audio to capture user’s attention in social news feeds.
If you want to use audio from another stock site or your own audio tracks, you can upload them in the Uploads tab or from the more option.

This spring, I ran 13 miles wearing a free T-shirt from a cement supplier, a pair of leggings I got from Oxfam, a £4 sports bra from Walthamstow market and a pair of £15 trainers off Vinted. I ran it, I am sure, at exactly the same speed and with the same level of comfort as I would have in a pair of £150 designer running tights and an £86 running shirt designed by Paul McCartney’s daughter. Which is to say that I hoofed along, sweating and sniffing and occasionally stopping to wee in a bush.
Fifteen years after taking up regular running, and at a point where I run six miles at least three times a week, I still refuse to pay more than £20 for any so-called “sportswear”. Sportswear, as far as I’m concerned, is whatever you wear when you’re doing sports. And if that includes old pyjamas, holiday shorts and a pair of trainers left over after a birthday party, then so be it.

Imagine a world in which you can do transactions and many other things without having to give your personal information. A world in which you don’t need to rely on banks or governments anymore. Sounds amazing, right? That’s exactly what blockchain technology allows us to do.
It’s like your computer’s hard drive. blockchain is a technology that lets you store data in digital blocks, which are connected together like links in a chain.
Blockchain technology was originally invented in 1991 by two mathematicians, Stuart Haber and W. Scot Stornetta. They first proposed the system to ensure that timestamps could not be tampered with.
A few years later, in 1998, software developer Nick Szabo proposed using a similar kind of technology to secure a digital payments system he called “Bit Gold.” However, this innovation was not adopted until Satoshi Nakamoto claimed to have invented the first Blockchain and Bitcoin.
A blockchain is a distributed database shared between the nodes of a computer network. It saves information in digital format. Many people first heard of blockchain technology when they started to look up information about bitcoin.
Blockchain is used in cryptocurrency systems to ensure secure, decentralized records of transactions.
Blockchain allowed people to guarantee the fidelity and security of a record of data without the need for a third party to ensure accuracy.

NFT stands for non-fungible token, which is a cryptographic token on a blockchain with unique identification codes that distinguish it from other tokens. This option is available on OpenSea and this simply denotes that your NFT will only be able to trade using Polygon's blockchain and not Etherum's blockchain. Mintable allows you to mint NFTs for free without paying any gas fees.
The answer is no. Non-Fungible Tokens are minted on the blockchain using cryptocurrencies such as Etherum, Solana, Polygon, and so on. Once a Non-Fungible Token is minted, the transaction is recorded on the blockchain and the contract or license is awarded to whoever has that Non-Fungible Token in their wallet.

To find optimism, I often go to Milton Keynes – and if that triggers a smirk, it is probably proof that you have never been there. Long known as England’s pre-eminent new town, it was granted city status two years ago, which matched not just its size and diversity but a modern optimism that you do not have to try hard to find. For sure, it has problems with poverty, inequality and homelessness. But it also pulses with a fascinating sense of the future.
On election day I was in one of Milton Keynes’s more deprived neighbourhoods, talking to people as they came in and out of the local polling station. And at about 4pm I spoke to Sandra, a young woman who had just finished her A-levels and was voting for the first time. What, I wondered, had she been thinking about as she decided who to support. “Workers’ rights, jobs, education, not serving in the army like Mr Sunak wants,” she said.

After England’s nerveless victory over Switzerland, during the penalty shootout at least, the Three Lions have gone back to their base in Blankenhain to prepare for Wednesday’s semi-final against the Netherlands. For many of the supporters, meanwhile, tens of thousands of whom were in the city for the game, their tournament is over. The airport was calling, but with a few extra memories tucked inside the hand luggage.

My WhatsApp messages show that I spend a lot of time complaining about capitalism, probably because I want to sound deep and radical, like a Sally Rooney character (closer analysis reveals that when I disparage “capitalism”, I usually mean “the need for me to work”). This is fairly hypocritical. I am no superfan, but I have capitalism’s greatest hits compilation and think it has some good tunes (takeaway food, Laser Lite earplugs, Elemis Aching Muscle Super Soak). My complaints, however, have become more heartfelt recently.
There are plenty of things capitalism is terrible at. Caring about or protecting the planet: absolutely not in capitalism’s wheelhouse. Promoting equality and treating humans with dignity: nope. But in addition to being failed by the free market in the big ways in which it was always going to fail us, I feel as if it is flunking the small stuff it was supposed to ace.

Lunch in Granada is not a calm affair. At 3pm in Bodegas Castaneda, a crowded, old-school tapas bar, every inch of the cluttered bar counter is taken. Waiters shout orders and squeeze between standing diners, plates of rose-pink jamón serrano and sizzling croquetas held above their heads, beer taps flick back and forth, wedges of tortilla Española and golden calamari pass above chilled glasses of fino.
We’ve come to try the Calicasas – the Bodega’s infamous mix of vermouth, gin, rum, soda and spices – and sip it gingerly while tucking into a mountainous platter of jamón serrano and local cheeses. One glass apiece and we’ve adjusted to the volume and have a feeling we could settle in for the rest of the day. A second glass is tempting, but we can’t spare the time; with only two days in one of Spain’s most fascinating cities, there’s simply too much to see.

There are things about the Turkish restaurant Goda in Finchley, north London, which are objectively funny. There’s the short tongue of red carpet, protruding from the front door, edged by velvet ropes, as if you’re arriving at a movie premier rather than a modest-looking grill house on a suburban shopping parade. There’s the sweetly random collection of black-and-white photos on the walls, which include the Turkish film star Türkan Şoray, Al Pacino in The Godfather and Elvis. I’m not sure any have eaten here, given it only opened five months ago. Then there’s the six-strong red wine list, which goes from an Argentinian Malbec at £37 to a barolo at £169, before suddenly offering a 2001 Château Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac, at £2,400. I decided not to check whether they really have it, in case they didn’t. That would have ruined the fun.

Steve Borthwick has told Marcus Smith “not to dwell” on Saturday’s disappointing 16-15 first Test defeat to the All Blacks and has backed his fly-half to bounce back from the missed kicks which ended up costing England the possibility of a rare victory in New Zealand.

Shifted from 16th-century Spain to a present-day oligarchy by director Jamie Manton, the titular aristocrat turned bandit is hell bent on love and revenge
Long on confrontation and chivalric vows, short on credible characterisation, Verdi’s fifth opera Ernani was one of the composer’s greatest early successes, but these days requires a firm directorial hand and a gutsy quartet of lead singers to keep its wheels turning at speed. Fortunately that’s by and large what Buxton international festival has assembled for its new production: a swift-paced and intelligible, if still not wholly plausible, Ernani in which sterling singing is allowed to take pride of place.
Set in 16th-century Spain, but shifted to a present-day oligarchy by director Jamie Manton, the opera turns largely on questions of duty and loyalty, and on its title character’s apparent death wish. In love with Elvira and bent on revenge against the king, the aristocrat turned bandit hurtles into perilous encounters with both, and offers several times to forfeit his own life, until a pledge made in extremis to Elvira’s uncle – a rival for her hand – obliges him to commit suicide just as he’s found happiness.

Club football, at least at the elite level, is meticulously planned. Teams of analysts pore over the data, find the patterns, identify the signings who will fit the style and mitigate areas of weakness, highlight potential flaws in opponents. The richest teams can buy not only the best players but also the best coaches and the best analysts and, as a result, elite club football, in as much as a sport as capricious as football ever can be, is predictable.
International football is wild. You can’t buy to fill the gaps. Squads end up so unbalanced and incoherent that coaches may as well be working at Manchester United. Managers can prepare but time is limited. History is always present; cultures even now remain defined. Spain will pass. France will grind. Portugal will defer to Cristiano Ronaldo. England will retreat inexplicably in defence of a lead (and, at times, a draw). Coaches have limited time with players who are being trained week-to-week in a vast range of different styles.

Turning 36 isn’t much of a milestone for most, but for me it marks a decade since the year that will always divide my life into a “before” and “after”. I was 26 when my dad died of cancer. Three months later, my mum died of a brain aneurysm. Suddenly, I was an adult orphan, selling up the family home where I’d grown up, eradicating the safety net I’d known all my life.
What really amplified the enormity of this loss was being an only child. Of course, having siblings isn’t a guarantee that grief will be shared or lessened – there are numerous reasons why this may not be the case. But for me, even with brilliant friends and relatives, the lack of a direct line to those people – someone who knew them like I did – felt absolutely gutting. When my dad died, my mum and I would try to distract ourselves with TV, but inevitably end up just talking and crying and reminiscing – it helped. When I lost her, I also lost the ability to talk about either of them with that level of intimacy. It’s a grieving tool that’s so needed, but that no one else aside from the people you’ve shared a life with can provide.

‘Theatres are taking the piss,” says 26-year-old aspiring actor and dedicated theatre fan Laurine. “I book tickets anyway, but hate myself for doing it.” Laurine relocated from France to London partly because of the promise of the West End, aiming to see all the shows she could. But she’s feeling increasingly defeated by the battle to find affordable tickets. Recently, she spent weeks entering ticket lotteries to see one of this summer’s biggest shows, Romeo & Juliet starring Tom Holland, after the first batch of tickets sold out in just two hours. “It was so stressful, it was like a part-time job,” she says.
Laurine eventually landed a spot after three weeks of trying, but she hasn’t always been so lucky. She was desperate to see Jonathan Bailey in the 2022 revival of Cock by Mike Bartlett, but when tickets rose to a “ridiculous” £400, she was priced out. And although she did manage to see Matt Smith in An Enemy of the People earlier this year, she was struck by the irony of the situation. “He delivers this monologue where he’s talking about capitalism and elitism and how culture is too expensive, but I could barely see him from the worst seat I’ve ever sat in, which I paid £35 for. I just felt angry.”

For a couple of minutes after the exit poll on Thursday night, nobody said a thing. About a dozen of Keir Starmer’s closest and longest-serving aides assembled at the back of the living room, turned and hugged each other. Some sobbed as aching exhaustion mixed with relief and joy.
Even more powerful feelings were on display in front of them. Starmer and his wife, Vic, along with their two teenage children, were lined up on the sofa watching the television almost like they were recreating the opening of the cartoon series The Simpsons. They tried to show they were relaxed in this upmarket house Starmer had borrowed from a friend. Their son wore his Arsenal shirt and their daughter, who has told him she has no intention of moving to Downing Street, gave everyone an excuse to laugh for a moment by letting out a long “Ewww” when her dad’s face appeared on the screen.

Polling shows voters in south of England switched because of Conservative inaction on polluted rivers and beaches
The sewage crisis was a significant factor in the Tories’ losing support in the “blue wall” in the south of England, electoral polling suggests.
Seven out of 10 voters supported legal measures to eliminate sewage spills in ecologically sensitive areas by 2030, according to polling conducted for Greenpeace by Survation just before the election. Less than a third of voters thought the Conservatives were right to weaken their commitments on the climate crisis and the environment.

Her bestselling debut, Fleishman Is in Trouble, became a hit TV series. Now Taffy Brodesser-Akner is taking on the American dream
How do you follow a novel like Fleishman Is in Trouble? If Taffy Brodesser-Akner knew what people loved so much about her debut she would have replicated it, she says. The story of a newly divorced hepatologist discovering the joys of dating apps while trying to look after his two kids when his ex-wife goes missing on a yoga retreat, Fleishman Is in Trouble was one of the smartest, funniest novels of recent years. It was made into a hit TV series with a starry cast, for which Brodesser-Akner wrote the screenplay. But writing her second novel almost drove her “insane”. Long Island Compromise might be described as a Jewish take on The Corrections (Brodesser-Akner has read Jonathan Franzen’s 2001 novel four times); a whopping family saga about money and the American Dream, following three generations of the Fletcher family as they find, and then lose, their fortune. A TV version is already under way. “Writing for me is not generally hard,” Brodesser-Akner admits, “and every sentence in this book was a hard one.”
Before Fleishman, Brodesser-Akner had already made a name for herself as a New York Times profile writer, with a string of high-profile celebrity interviews including Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj (who fell asleep) and Gwyneth Paltrow, who she practically moved in with for a while. While she never lets her subjects off the hook, she brings to her journalism the same understanding of human absurdity and vanity that makes Fleishman so appealing. In 2018 she went to Santa Cruz to interview Franzen : “His sentences, wow!” she says now. “You don’t really get who he is unless you’re sitting around with him.” Her description of him not so much sitting on a couch but dripping off it, “like a Dali painting”, has been imprinted on my memory. That evening she wrote the final pages of Fleishman in her hotel room. “Bad profiles are written by people who get charmed into thinking they’re friends,” she has said, which is a pity because I would really like to be her friend.

Google admitted on Tuesday that the technology is threatening its environmental targets after revealing that datacentres, a key piece of AI infrastructure, had helped increase its greenhouse gas emissions by 48% since 2019. It said “significant uncertainty” around reaching its target of net zero emissions by 2030 – reducing the overall amount of CO2 emissions it is responsible for to zero – included “the uncertainty around the future environmental impact of AI, which is complex and difficult to predict”.

Blockchain technology was originally invented in 1991 by two mathematicians, Stuart Haber and W. Scot Stornetta. They first proposed the system to ensure that timestamps could not be tampered with.
A few years later, in 1998, software developer Nick Szabo proposed using a similar kind of technology to secure a digital payments system he called “Bit Gold.” However, this innovation was not adopted until Satoshi Nakamoto claimed to have invented the first Blockchain and Bitcoin.
A blockchain is a distributed database shared between the nodes of a computer network. It saves information in digital format. Many people first heard of blockchain technology when they started to look up information about bitcoin.
Blockchain is used in cryptocurrency systems to ensure secure, decentralized records of transactions.
Blockchain allowed people to guarantee the fidelity and security of a record of data without the need for a third party to ensure accuracy.
