I have been in a relationship for the past six months. We are both men in our late 30s.
Early in the relationship, I discovered that my partner was using Grindr after we had agreed to delete it. He told me he was just chatting to people and then erased the app. However, three weeks ago I cheated on him with a random person I met after downloading Grindr. I have never cheated in previous relationships. That being said, I think my distrust of my partner led me to feel uncommitted and give myself permission to have a hook-up. School districts in California will have to create rules restricting student smartphone use under a new law that the state’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, signed on Monday.
The law requires districts to pass rules by 1 July 2026 to limit or ban students from using smartphones on campus or while they are under the supervision of school staff. Districts will have to update their policies every five years after that.

Fantastical storytelling underpins Tarsem’s 2006 film, in which an injured stuntman relates an elaborate fable to a young girl
Tarsem Singh’s indulgent epic, produced by Spike Jonze and David Fincher, was little seen on its original release in 2006, and now gets a rerelease in a 4K restoration on the Mubi streaming platform. It’s certainly worth noticing, with its Gilliamesque surrealism, and its setting in Rajasthan, north-western India, offers wonderful landscapes. Its beguiling set pieces feature Justine Waddell playing some deadpan comedy as a gloriously costumed princess – although I have to admit that in general the film’s rather placid, stately, fantasy style can be exasperatingly inert.
The scene is Los Angeles in the early years of silent pictures; Lee Pace plays Roy, a stuntman who is now seriously, perhaps permanently, injured. He is laid up in hospital and deeply depressed after a dangerous fall filming a movie whose lead actress was once his girlfriend, but has now left him for the vapid male star. Roy is befriended by a little Romanian girl from the neighbouring children’s ward; this is Alexandria (played by Catinca Untaru, whose English dialogue is sometimes a little indistinct). Kindly, Roy offers to tell the wide-eyed Alexandria an epic story of adventure featuring five heroes battling a hateful governor, and the story comes to life before our eyes with Roy and Alexandria appearing in it and some whimsical muddling up of Indians and Native Americans.

I’m afraid I shrieked when I read that Michael Cole – longterm publicist for the late former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed – cannot come to the phone these days. If you covered a certain phase of British public life, you would know that Michael Cole could always come to the phone. Coming to the phone was what Michael Cole did, always to emit some hugely pompous shitblast in defence of his master, who is now the subject of multiple rape and sexual assault allegations. Alas, Michael is currently so shocked that no emission has been forthcoming. Instead, his wife was deployed to inform the press that Michael “is not giving any interviews or talking at the moment”. However, she did claim he found the women’s allegations “terribly distressing” and that “of course” he had been unaware of all of it.
From spokesman to sending out your spokeswife … I would say life comes at you fast, but of course it doesn’t. Fayed ran his entire race without his years of alleged sexual crimes catching up with him, and though he is not entombed in a pyramid on the roof of Harrods, as he wished, he certainly got away with it all. When he died, Cole rushed out to inform Radio 4’s Today programme that his former boss was “fascinating … larger than life … full of great humanity”. Yeah – not the third one.

Benjamin Netanyahu must be stopped. The horror unfolding in Lebanon is another crime, to add to all the others. Are Britain, the US, the UN and everyone else who supposedly cares about civilian lives, human rights and international law really going to look away while Israel’s out-of-control prime minister does it again? That shocking prospect beggars belief.
“Again” in this context means Netanyahu turning southern Lebanon, maybe the whole country, into a sort of second Gaza. More than 41,000 Gazan Palestinians, mostly civilians, have died since the 7 October Hamas atrocities. Nearly 500 people were killed by Israeli forces in Lebanon on Monday, including many children. Tens of thousands fled their homes. How many more innocents is this man going to kill before he’s out of office?

The PM will today deliver his leader’s speech to Labour conference. This is what he should say instead
Conference, I stand here ready to bury Britain’s age of decline and usher in the age of ambition. For years, politicians have offered this nation a daily diet of pessimism, demanding ever greater sacrifice from those with nothing left to give. And they have delivered on that pessimism – from stagnant growth to falling wages, from crumbling infrastructure to disintegrating public services, from our declining town centres to a mounting housing emergency.
But that ambition begins with some humility. Our nation expected change, and so far it has seen yet more politicians on the take while imposing hardship on the already struggling. It is far better to change course than double down on mistakes. Our democracy has long been corrupted by those with bottomless pockets, and let’s be candid: they’re not splashing their cash out of generosity. That ends here. If you’re a wealthy individual or private company, invest your money elsewhere, because all such donations to political parties and politicians will now be banned. No more hospitality or freebies: and yes, I will pay for my own Arsenal tickets.

Alaa Abd el-Fattah is due to complete five-year sentence over social media post but family fear further charges
The family of Alaa Abd el-Fattah, a British activist and author imprisoned in Egypt, are calling on the UK government as well as the Egyptian authorities to ensure he walks free at the end of this month after five years in detention.
“Let’s remember that this is an innocent man who has committed no crime, but even so he will have served his time on 29 September,” said Abd el-Fattah’s sister, Sanaa Seif.

The chancellor suggested that she might need to rewrite her fiscal rules. That would be a good thing
There was no screeching U-turn in Rachel Reeves’ speech to delegates at the Labour party conference. But make no mistake, the chancellor is changing course. Earlier this month she had warned of a “painful” budget. In Liverpool, Rachel Reeves said her “optimism for Britain burns brighter than ever”. In a matter of weeks, the tone has gone from doom to dreaming. This was necessary because Ms Reeves had, as the former Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane noted, erred by creating a sense of “fear and foreboding” which threatened to undermine a potential economic recovery. Consumer confidence was sinking. Labour’s poll lead over the Tories on the economy disappeared. Something had to be done.
But it is unclear whether Ms Reeves has done enough. She did reiterate that Tory overspending meant “tough decisions” lay ahead. It appears a self‑fulfilling prophecy is at play here. When people hear that economic conditions are expected to worsen, they may delay activities that stimulate the economy. While the nuances in the chancellor’s speech might be missed, Ms Reeves must hope that voters hear her promise of “no return to austerity”.

The name of Germany’s beleaguered chancellor, Olaf Scholz, was not on the ballot on Sunday, as his home state of Brandenburg went to the polls. But it might as well have been. Approval ratings for the coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and liberals that he leads have plunged to record lows. Earlier this month, a far-right party shockingly won a regional election for the first time since the second world war. Had Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) repeated that feat in Brandenburg – an eastern state that Mr Scholz’s Social Democratic party (SPD) has controlled since reunification – the knives would have been out for a leader whose party fears a rout in federal elections next year.
In the event, disaster was averted. By a narrow margin, the AfD finished second, not first, as the SPD benefited from tactical voting to keep it at bay. But the good news for the chancellor ends there. Even allowing for the particular political dynamics of eastern Germany, a dismal September for the coalition government risks holing it below the waterline. In elections in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia, the Greens struggled even to reach the 5% threshold necessary for parliamentary representation. The liberal Free Democratic party (FDP) was all but extinguished from the political map. In Brandenburg, the long-serving SPD state premier, Dietmar Woidke, retained office only after effectively disassociating himself from the national party and Mr Scholz.

Well, we remain committed to them, PK, and you know if – and I would say the more likely path is if Peter Dutton stops being stubborn and engages with us – there is a way through on this. I don’t know why they have dealt themselves out on this…
They know this is good, sensible policy, and I would urge them to reconsider their opinion, their position, because we’re not going to go around being threatened, having the finger wave by Nick McKim saying that the government should rip up the way the bank the fiscal and monetary policy systems have worked in this country very successfully without political interference on the monetary policy side for decades.
Well, I just think the Greens are out of control at the moment, full of self importance and out seeking populist approach to everything. It’s crazy what they’re saying to us.
So if that’s their ultimatum – and you know, it’s a bit unseemly, Nick McKim going around issuing ultimatums – you know, no, we won’t work with that, because that is crazy. It’s economically irresponsible, and we won’t do it.
They remain on the table. We’re pretty keen on them. So is the bank, and we certainly thought that the Reserve Bank support for these reforms would sway the Liberal Party… The treasurer has been working with the shadow treasurer closely on it, but they’ve dealt themselves out, for whatever reason…

Rover trials in a quarry in the UK showing a four-wheeled rover, known as Codi, using its robotic arm and a powerful computer vision system to pick up sample tubes.
The rover drives to the samples with an accuracy of 10cm, constantly mapping the terrain. Codi uses its arm and four cameras to locate the sample tube, retrieve it and safely store it on the rover – all of it without human intervention. At every stop, the rover uses stereo cameras to build up a 180-degree map of the surroundings and plan its next maneouvres. Once parked, the camera on top of the mast detects the tube and estimates its position with respect to the rover. The robotic arm initiates a complex choreography to move closer to the sample, fetch it and store it.
The sample tubes are a replica of the hermetically sealed samples inside which NASA’s Perseverance rover is collecting precious martian soil inside. To most people on Earth, they resemble lightsabres.

Earlier this month, a far-right party shockingly won a regional election for the first time since the second world war. Had Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) repeated that feat in Brandenburg – an eastern state that Mr Scholz’s Social Democratic party (SPD) has controlled since reunification – the knives would have been out for a leader whose party fears a rout in federal elections next year.
In the event, disaster was averted. By a narrow margin, the AfD finished second, not first, as the SPD benefited from tactical voting to keep it at bay. But the good news for the chancellor ends there. Even allowing for the particular political dynamics of eastern Germany, a dismal September for the coalition government risks holing it below the waterline. In elections in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia, the Greens struggled even to reach the 5% threshold necessary for parliamentary representation. The liberal Free Democratic party (FDP) was all but extinguished from the political map. In Brandenburg, the long-serving SPD state premier, Dietmar Woidke, retained office only after effectively disassociating himself from the national party and Mr Scholz.

Hassan waited until the last minute to flee. As Israeli warplanes thundered overhead and bombs began to fall on the forests surrounding his home town of Deir al-Zahrani, south Lebanon, on Monday morning, he told himself he still had some time. For almost a year the town, 12 miles from the Israel-Lebanon border, had been mostly spared from the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah that had engulfed much of south Lebanon.
The bombs grew closer. His neighbours began to get calls from unknown numbers with a recorded message, the voice speaking classical Arabic with a strange accent: “If you are in a building where there are Hezbollah weapons, distance yourself from the village.” Hassan had no idea if the homes around him had weapons in them. The 1995-96 season was a significant moment for football in Manchester. United won the Double as their hapless neighbours, City, were relegated in fittingly farcical circumstances. Off the field (or adjacent to it, at least), United were gold-plating their dominance with the completion of a new North Stand that made Old Trafford the biggest club stadium in England. And in what must have felt like a footnote at the time, Manchester was awarded the 2002 Commonwealth Games, with a bid based around a new, purpose-built stadium on a brownfield site. Fast-forward three decades, and the Etihad is now home to English football’s dominant force, an all-conquering team who play in sky blue. It’s been a journey that would take some explaining to a tracksuited, gum-chewing Alex Ferguson if you were to time-travel back to the mid-90s in search of affordable Oasis tickets. Old Trafford’s North Stand is now the Sir Alex Ferguson stand, but not much else has changed at United’s once-palatial home since their glory days. The last major upgrade works were in 2006 and the stadium has entered a post-industrial decline that dovetails with the team’s waning fortunes. One architect looking into United’s proposed regeneration plans had this to say about the former Theatre of Dreams: “Wiring, electrical installation ... everything is approaching the end of its useful life.”

Benjamin Netanyahu must be stopped. The horror unfolding in Lebanon is another crime, to add to all the others. Are Britain, the US, the UN and everyone else who supposedly cares about civilian lives, human rights and international law really going to look away while Israel’s out-of-control prime minister does it again? That shocking prospect beggars belief.
“Again” in this context means Netanyahu turning southern Lebanon, maybe the whole country, into a sort of second Gaza. More than 41,000 Gazan Palestinians, mostly civilians, have died since the 7 October Hamas atrocities. Nearly 500 people were killed by Israeli forces in Lebanon on Monday, including many children. Tens of thousands fled their homes. How many more innocents is this man going to kill before he’s out of office?

And so Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves find themselves in the curious position of stressing that economic gloom is not an end in itself. It would be uniquely perverse to pursue such an objective. “We are planning for misery” is a slogan that would not endure for very long.
Their need to state the obvious – that they seek sunnier uplands – is partly due to previous failures of communication. Starmer and Reeves should be explaining not only what they are doing, but also why, most days of the year. The “why” question is the most important, and evidently the answer is not that they want us all to be gloomy for the next 10 years.

Watch the second episode of the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover mission – Europe’s ambitious exploration journey to search for past and present signs of life on Mars.
This episode starts with Rosalind searching for traces of life below the martian surface using a ground penetrating radar and a set of cameras.
The rover will dig, collect, and investigate the chemical composition of material collected by a drill. Rosalind Franklin will be the first rover to reach a depth of up to two metres deep below the surface, acquiring samples that have been protected from surface radiation and extreme temperatures.
Rosalind Franklin uses the WISDOM radar to help scientists on Earth decide where to drill. Besides identifying the most promising targets for sampling, WISDOM will help the rover avoid potential hazards, such as the presence of buried rocks that could damage the drill.
The scientific eyes of the rover are set on the Panoramic Camera suite known as PanCam. The Close-UP Imager (CLUPI) sits on the side of the drill box, a camera designed to acquire high-resolution, colour, close-up images of outcrops, rocks and soils. PanCam and CLUPI will help scientists find the most promising spots to drill. These instruments can also investigate very fine outcrop details and image drill samples before they are sent into the rover’s laboratory.
After the rover retracts its drill, the sample is in a special chamber at the tip. Under the reduced martian gravity (38% of Earth’s), the material drops onto a special “hand” that the rover can extend to the front to collect drill samples.
The mission will serve to demonstrate key technologies that Europe needs to master for future planetary exploration missions.

Rover trials in a quarry in the UK showing a four-wheeled rover, known as Codi, using its robotic arm and a powerful computer vision system to pick up sample tubes.
The rover drives to the samples with an accuracy of 10cm, constantly mapping the terrain. Codi uses its arm and four cameras to locate the sample tube, retrieve it and safely store it on the rover – all of it without human intervention. At every stop, the rover uses stereo cameras to build up a 180-degree map of the surroundings and plan its next maneouvres. Once parked, the camera on top of the mast detects the tube and estimates its position with respect to the rover. The robotic arm initiates a complex choreography to move closer to the sample, fetch it and store it.
The sample tubes are a replica of the hermetically sealed samples inside which NASA’s Perseverance rover is collecting precious martian soil inside. To most people on Earth, they resemble lightsabres.
The reddish terrain, although not fully representative of Mars in terms of soil composition, has plenty of slopes and rocks of different sizes, similar to what a rover might encounter on the martian surface. Quarry testing is an essential next step in the development process, providing a unique and dynamic landscape that cannot be replicated indoors.
ESA continues to run further research using the rover to maintain and develop rover capabilities in Europe.

ESA’s Metal 3D Printer has produced the first metal part ever created in space.
The technology demonstrator, built by Airbus and its partners, was launched to the International Space Station at the start of this year, where ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen installed the payload in the European Drawer Rack of ESA’s Columbus module. In August, the printer successfully printed the first 3D metal shape in space.
This product, along with three others planned during the rest of the experiment, will return to Earth for quality analysis: two of the samples will go to ESA’s technical heart in the Netherlands (ESTEC), another will go to ESA’s astronaut training centre in Cologne (EAC) for use in the LUNA facility, and the fourth will go to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
As exploration of the Moon and Mars will increase mission duration and distance from Earth, resupplying spacecraft will be more challenging. Additive manufacturing in space will give autonomy for the mission and its crew, providing a solution to manufacture needed parts, to repair equipment or construct dedicated tools, on demand during the mission, rather than relying on resupplies and redundancies.
ESA’s technology demonstrator is the first to successfully print a metal component in microgravity conditions. In the past, the International Space Station has hosted plastic 3D printers.
ESA's Prospect package, including drill and a miniaturised laboratory, will fly to the Moon’s South Polar region in search of volatiles, including water ice, as part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative.

Blockchain technology was originally invented in 1991 by two mathematicians, Stuart Haber and W. Scot Stornetta. They first proposed the system to ensure that timestamps could not be tampered with.
A few years later, in 1998, software developer Nick Szabo proposed using a similar kind of technology to secure a digital payments system he called “Bit Gold.” However, this innovation was not adopted until Satoshi Nakamoto claimed to have invented the first Blockchain and Bitcoin.
A blockchain is a distributed database shared between the nodes of a computer network. It saves information in digital format. Many people first heard of blockchain technology when they started to look up information about bitcoin.
Blockchain is used in cryptocurrency systems to ensure secure, decentralized records of transactions.
Blockchain allowed people to guarantee the fidelity and security of a record of data without the need for a third party to ensure accuracy.

They know this is good, sensible policy, and I would urge them to reconsider their opinion, their position, because we’re not going to go around being threatened, having the finger wave by Nick McKim saying that the government should rip up the way the bank the fiscal and monetary policy systems have worked in this country very successfully without political interference on the monetary policy side for decades.

Jonathan Becker is remembering an occasion when he was working with the late creative director of Vogue, André Leon Talley. They were supposed to be taking a picture of “some jewellery lady and her daughter on a pony”. If you can’t already tell, Becker wasn’t very excited. But Talley was – and he was annoyed at Becker for not being more so. “He was twice my size,” says Becker, “and he was slapping me upside the head, ‘Get the girl. Take the picture now.’”
It was not, however, his sort of shoot. “André loved fashion and brands,” he says, “and that just didn’t intrigue me in the least.” Despite being a photographer who has spent five decades taking pictures of, well, everyone, Becker is not himself a household name. But many of the people he has photographed, for the likes of Vanity Fair and Vogue, are – and more. Becker’s latest book, Lost Time, is bursting with them.

Russia plans to maintain defence spending at an historic high in 2025, Bloomberg News reports, suggesting that the Kremlin intend to continue its invasion of Ukraine for the foreseeable future.
The Kremlin is increasing up the spending as its forces slowly advance in eastern Ukraine. The Russian government has raised personal and corporate taxes to plug holes in the budget.
Draft three-year budget proposals seen by Bloomberg News show the government intends to increase defense spending to 13.2tn rubles ($142bn) in 2025 from 10.4tn rubles projected for this year, putting it at 6.2% of gross domestic product.
Military expenditure is planned to decline to 5.6% of GDP in 2026 and 5.1% in 2027, according to Bloomberg calculations based on the draft data.

The name of Germany’s beleaguered chancellor, Olaf Scholz, was not on the ballot on Sunday, as his home state of Brandenburg went to the polls. But it might as well have been. Approval ratings for the coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and liberals that he leads have plunged to record lows. Earlier this month, a far-right party shockingly won a regional election for the first time since the second world war. Had Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) repeated that feat in Brandenburg – an eastern state that Mr Scholz’s Social Democratic party (SPD) has controlled since reunification – the knives would have been out for a leader whose party fears a rout in federal elections next year.
In the event, disaster was averted. By a narrow margin, the AfD finished second, not first, as the SPD benefited from tactical voting to keep it at bay. But the good news for the chancellor ends there. Even allowing for the particular political dynamics of eastern Germany, a dismal September for the coalition government risks holing it below the waterline. In elections in Brandenburg, Saxony and Thuringia, the Greens struggled even to reach the 5% threshold necessary for parliamentary representation. The liberal Free Democratic party (FDP) was all but extinguished from the political map. In Brandenburg, the long-serving SPD state premier, Dietmar Woidke, retained office only after effectively disassociating himself from the national party and Mr Scholz.

Heavy rain caused extensive flooding in central Japan over the weekend, with at least one person reported dead and several more unaccounted for.
Officials said “unprecedented” rainfall generated floods and landslides in Ishikawa prefecture, where a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake on New Year’s Day killed more than 200 people. The Japan meteorological agency issued its highest-level warning for Ishikawa, advising of a “life-threatening situation”.

When Troye Sivan, pop’s pre-eminent twink, and Charli xcx, the 32-year-old British club rat, booked their first headlining arena tour earlier this year, the pairing seemed like a natural fit, if not the most sonically cohesive. Both artists, longtime friends and occasional collaborators, had new music coming out; both produce heady, deliriously catchy songs about the glories of intoxication, for overlapping, largely queer fanbases. Together, they could transcend pop’s so-called middle class into full-fledged arena stardom.
And then Brat happened. Brash, unapologetic, irony-tinged and sincerely messy, Charli’s club-ready album, released in June, became the soundtrack of the internet’s summer, her most commercially successful project to date as well as a meme, an ethos, a vibe. In a few months, Charli went from semi-famous pop star with a rabid cult following, underground bona fides and critical acclaim to CNN roundtable subject and viral hit-maker, with songs big enough to make it on the playlists of straight weddings outside New York and LA. So it was that at Madison Square Garden on Monday night (365 party girl, for real), the crowd for the co-headlining Sweat tour was a two-toned sea of “city sewer slut” black and brat green – the sickly, striking shade that took over the internet, was co-opted by a presidential campaign, and will likely go down as the color of 2024.

About 11.6 million people in the UK received the benefit last winter, an increase of 214,000 on the previous year, according to figures released on Tuesday by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The overwhelming majority are to have this removed this winter under plans announced by the Labour government to cut spending on the benefit.

These particular attacks from North Korean state-funded hacking team Lazarus Group are new, but the overall malware campaign against the Python development community has been running since at least August of 2023, when a number of popular open source Python tools were maliciously duplicated with added malware. Now, though, there are also attacks involving “coding tests” that only exist to get the end user to install hidden malware on their system (cleverly hidden with Base64 encoding) that allows remote execution once present. The capacity for exploitation at that point is pretty much unlimited, due to the flexibility of Python and how it interacts with the underlying OS...

For her extensively researched book, The Inner Clock, the environmental science writer Lynne Peeples spoke with some 240 scientists, chronobiologists, athletes, astronauts and “chrono-coaches” (yes, that’s a thing) and even embedded in a windowless underground Arkansas bunker in order to experience body-clock disruption first-hand.
For anyone who suffers from sleep issues, gets thrown off by daylight saving time or has a variable work schedule, Peeples’ insights come as a bracing slap in the face. Not getting the rest we need can impair our physical and mental health – sometimes to drastic degrees.
