Spanish MPs give final approval to amnesty law for Catalonia’s separatists
Thu, 30 May 2024 09:59:34 GMT

Ex-regional president Carles Puigdemont among high-profile beneficiaries after MPs approve law by 177 votes to 172

Spanish MPs have given their final approval to the controversial and deeply divisive amnesty law that the country’s socialist prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, offered Catalan separatists in return for helping him back to power after last year’s inconclusive general election.

The new law, approved by 177 votes to 172 in Spain’s 350-seat congress of deputies, will apply to about 400 people involved in the symbolic independence referendum of November 2014 and the illegal unilateral poll that followed three years later, which triggered Spain’s worst political crisis in four decades.

Jury deliberations begin in Trump criminal trial | First Thing
Thu, 30 May 2024 10:19:20 GMT

Judge Juan Merchan tells jury ‘you are the judgers of facts’. Plus, nearly 5,000 Russians under 24 thought to have died so far in Ukraine

Good morning.

Donald Trump’s criminal hush-money case in New York inched towards its conclusion on Wednesday as jury deliberations started just before 11.30am.

Which Trump case is this one again? Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records over an alleged hush-money scheme involving the adult film star Stormy Daniels. He denies all allegations.

Could he face jail time? Yes in theory, but it is unlikely, experts say. He is a first-time offender, and the crime he is charged with is a non-violent “paper” crime.

How does the advance complicate Israel’s relations with Egypt? Egypt’s state-linked Al-Qahera News reported a “high-level Egyptian source” as saying that Israel was using claims of “tunnels” under Egypt’s border with Gaza as cover for its Rafah offensive.

Cher wins royalties lawsuit against Sonny Bono’s widow
Thu, 30 May 2024 09:12:58 GMT

Mary Bono had argued that she no longer needed to pay royalties to Cher after invoking a feature of US copyright law, but a judge has ruled otherwise

Cher has prevailed in a long-running lawsuit that she filed against the widow of her former musical partner and husband, Sonny Bono.

Cher had received royalties from her chart-topping song catalogue with Bono since an agreement in their 1978 divorce settlement, that stated publishing revenue would be split evenly between the pair. Bono died in 1998, and his share passed to his heirs.

‘This election is critical for Congress’: can India’s Gandhi dynasty survive?
Thu, 30 May 2024 03:37:43 GMT

Experts say a third consecutive electoral defeat in June could throw into question the political viability of the party and the family synonymous with it

The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty were once the giants of India’s politics – the family at the forefront of the independence battle, who built up the formidable Congress party and produced three prime ministers.

But now the family are fighting for their survival. India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, and his Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) government are seeking a third term in power in elections taking place over six weeks. Most analysts believe a BJP victory against Congress and its allies once again seems likely.

‘I just need change’: voters voice discontent as South Africa goes to polls
Wed, 29 May 2024 18:20:44 GMT

ANC majority in national election at risk for first time since 1990s as unemployment, corruption and power cuts erode support

In the heart of Soweto, at the president’s home voting station, support for the African National Congress (ANC) was everywhere as South Africa went to the polls, with many voters wearing the party’s bright yellow and speaking of their families’ generational loyalty to the movement that fought to end apartheid.

However, even here, there were voters who had turned against the ANC, as it risked losing its majority in national elections on Wednesday for the first time since Nelson Mandela led it to power in South Africa’s first fully democratic vote in 1994.

South Africa elections: voting under way amid grim national mood
Wed, 29 May 2024 06:56:59 GMT

Ruling African National Congress party could lose majority for first time since apartheid ended 30 years ago

Explainer: what are the issues and will the ANC lose its majority?

South Africans are voting in what are expected to be the most competitive elections since the end of apartheid, which could result in the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party losing its majority for the first time since Nelson Mandela led it to power 30 years ago.

The national mood is grim owing to some of the world’s highest rates of unemployment and inequality, power cuts, water shortages and violent crime. Younger generations do not feel the same gratitude and loyalty to the ANC as many of their parents and grandparents do, for leading the successful fight for multi-racial democracy.

How an Indian state became a testing ground for Hindu nationalism
Thu, 30 May 2024 02:00:16 GMT

Hannah Ellis-Petersen reports from Uttarakhand, which offers a glimpse into what the future might look like if the BJP retains its power in national elections

“One of the most significant elements of Modi’s rule is how his Hindu nationalist politics has reshaped the country,” the Guardian’s south Asia correspondent Hannah Ellis-Petersen tells Michael Safi. “Uttarakhand is a state where I think we’ve seen the real consequences of that narrative play out.”

Hannah explains how religious tensions have been stoked in the state of Uttarakhand through conspiracy theories, political rhetoric and the destruction of Muslim shrines and tombs. We hear about the rising violence against the Muslim minority in the area and why this election is a concerning time for them in the state.

Aespa: Armageddon review | Alexis Petridis’s album of the week
Thu, 30 May 2024 10:15:26 GMT

(SM Entertainment)
Cutesy melodies, dubstep basslines, pop-punk and disco on the K-pop foursome’s debut album are outshone by their intriguing world-building, with interdimensional rifts and alien popcorn

If you doubt that the world of South Korean manufactured pop is significantly different from its western counterpart, then a description of female quartet Aespa – or rather the world around them – should put you right.

Their name may sound like an upmarket brand of air-freshener, but, according to the Seoul-based entertainment company that launched them in 2020, it melds the words “avatar”, “experience” and “aspect” in a way that’s intended to symbolise the ability to “meet another self through an avatar”. Aespa themselves are enmeshed in a kind of K-pop equivalent to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in which bands are promoted as superheroes with interlinked storylines. In the case of Aespa, this involves each member having an online avatar or “ae” that is supposed to exist in another dimension called the Flat, but which can cross over to the real world via something called the Synk. In between the real world and the Flat lurks another virtual realm called the Kwangya, lawless and inhabited by Aespa’s mysterious mortal enemy the Black Mamba, who may or may not have hacked into the avatar of one of the band’s members, Karina, thus corrupting the real-world Karina.

A 73-year-old British passenger died of a suspected heart attack and dozens of people were injured after flight SQ321 from London to Singapore encountered what the airline described as sudden, extreme turbulence while flying over Myanmar. The flight carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew diverted to Bangkok for an emergency landing.

Turbulence is the leading cause of in-flight injuries to crew and passengers and after the fatal Singapore Airlines incident and injuries to passengers above Turkey on a Qatar Airways flight, you might be wondering if flights are about to get bumpier. Incidents of severe turbulence are on the rise – increasing by 55% between 1979 and 2020 – and the climate crisis is thought to be a responsible factor

Meera Sodha’s vegan recipe for courgette and white bean curry | The new vegan
Thu, 30 May 2024 11:00:09 GMT

Fast, furious and fresh, Sri Lankan-style vegetable curries take mere minutes to cook

If you’ve ever had Sri Lankan “rice and curry” for lunch, you’ll know the term is a misnomer. It’s not just one curry, but at least three and up to five that are served for lunch every day. How, you might wonder, is it possible to cook so many things in time for lunch? One of the answers is that Sri Lankan vegetable curries are fast and furious. Ingredients hit thin, metal saucepans in quick succession and are brought up to a Vesuvius-level boil, only to come out tasting surprisingly heavenly and delicate about 15 minutes later. The courgette is the perfect vegetable for such treatment: it’s tender , fresh and in need of a little spicing up.

Discover Meera’s recipes and many more from your favourite cooks in the new Guardian Feast app, with smart features to make everyday cooking easier and more fun

‘We can take any side down’: meet the USA’s T20 World Cup cricket squad
Thu, 30 May 2024 11:15:35 GMT

One of this summer’s hosts is represented by a multinational, multicultural team that embodies the American dream

One summer night in Centerville, Ohio, in 2010, a scattered band of club cricketers gathered for their regular Wednesday practice session in Stubbs Park. One had brought a new recruit, his 19-year-old nephew Ali Khan, who had only just come over from his village in Attock, Pakistan. Khan had only ever played with a tape ball, but after his first over with a real one all the other players stopped to watch his second. “Everyone,” Khan remembers, “was like: ‘Wait, who’s this kid? Where’s he from again?’” They put him in the first team that very same weekend.

Over a decade later, Khan, now 33, has just finished the second of three games against Bangladesh at the Prairie View ground in Houston, a warm-up series for the World Cup. USA were one-nil up and one win away from their first-ever series victory against a Test-playing nation, but the game was getting away from them. Bangladesh only needed 21 runs from the last 18 balls. They had four wickets left, and one of them was Shakib Al Hasan, one of the world’s very best all-round cricketers, who was 30 not out off just 22 balls.

The Taiwanese civilians training for a Chinese invasion – video

Kuo Chiu, known as KC to his friends, teaches urban design at Tunghai University in Taiwan. He’s also one of many of the country's citizens who practises rifle skills in his spare time, in case of a Chinese invasion.

The population of Taiwan has long grown familiar with Beijing’s pledge to one day ‘unify’ what it claims is a breakaway province. But recently, there has been a significant increase in aggressive and intimidatory acts.

Taiwan’s 160,000 active military personnel are vastly outnumbered by China’s 2 million-member armed forces, leading many civilians to turn to voluntary medical and combat training to protect themselves.

The Guardian's video team spent time with KC to see how he is preparing

Currently, there are only four students attending the school, often leaving just one in each classroom. Denmark is a haven for cyclists of all abilities, with 11,000km of marked cycle routes to ride. From adventurous cycling on multi-day trips that take in the country’s most varied scenery, to day trips and wine tours, these are the country’s best bike routes for everyone, from hobbyists to expert-level athletes.
