Donald Trump hits out at guilty verdict as Biden campaign says ‘no one above the law’ – live
Fri, 31 May 2024 08:41:52 GMT

The former president has decried the trial as ‘rigged’ and a ‘disgrace’ after he was found guilty on all counts in his hush money trial

Cheers – and moans – around New York in response to a jury finding Donald Trump guilty:

Donald Trump is set to be sentenced on 11 July, after being found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records. While the decision rests entirely with Juan Merchan, the judge overseeing the case, experts say Trump is unlikely to receive prison time: the crime he has been found guilty of is a non-violent paper crime, and he is a first-time offender.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy: Russian troops are laughing at and ‘hunting’ Ukrainians
Fri, 31 May 2024 07:55:06 GMT

Exclusive interview: Ukrainian president says US delaying use of western weapons on targets inside Russia has cost lives

Joe Biden’s delay in sanctioning the use of western weapons against targets in Russia has left the Kremlin’s forces laughing at Ukraine and able to “hunt” its people, Volodymyr Zelenskiy has told the Guardian.

In a wide-ranging interview in Kyiv, the Ukrainian president said that the White House’s equivocation had cost lives and he urged the US president to overcome his perennial worries about possible nuclear “escalation” with Moscow.

New US weapons had still not arrived in sufficient quantities to equip additional Ukrainian brigades in the north-east, where Russia is advancing.

Vladimir Putin was similar to Adolf Hitler, saying: “Putin is not crazy. He’s dangerous, which is much scarier.”

He had asked the former British prime minister Boris Johnson to lobby Donald Trump in the run-up to a vote in the US Congress in April to approve $61bn in aid to Ukraine, which hard-right Republicans had opposed.

The UK Labour leader, Keir Starmer, whom he met in Kyiv last year, was a “good guy”. He added, after a pause: “Rishi [Sunak] is also a good guy.”

The Guardian view on India’s election: Narendra Modi’s audacity of hate | Editorial
Thu, 30 May 2024 17:52:58 GMT

India’s prime minister encourages a belief in his divinity, leading followers to think it is God’s purpose to spread fear and loathing

“No party or candidate shall include in any activity which may aggravate existing differences or create mutual hatred or cause tension between different castes and communities, religious or linguistic.” So reads the rulebook for Indian elections. Has anyone told Narendra Modi? India’s prime minister has resorted to overtly Islamophobic language during the two-month campaign, painting India’s 200 million Muslims as an existential threat to the Hindu majority. Laughably, the body charged with conducting free and fair polls did issue a feeble call for restraint from “star campaigners”. With the Indian election results out next week, one commentator warned Mr Modi has “put a target on Indian Muslims’ backs, redirecting the anger of poor and marginalised Hindu communities away from crony capitalists and the privileged upper castes”.

Mr Modi’s tirades are meant to distract an electorate suffering from high inflation and a lack of jobs despite rapid economic growth. His Bharatiya Janata party’s political strategy is to emphasise threats to Hindu civilisation, and the need for a united Hindu nation against Muslims. However, Mr Modi has fused this Hindu nationalism with the idea that he was sent by God. The Congress party’s Rahul Gandhi, his main opponent, suggested that anyone else making such a claim needed to see a psychiatrist.

ANC looks set to lose majority in watershed moment for South Africa

Early election count puts African National Congress on 42% of the vote, compared with 57% in final tally in 2019

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress party looks set to lose its majority for the first time since it swept to power at the end of apartheid, in a watershed moment for the country, as support for the former liberation movement collapsed below 50% in partial results.

With 41.1% of votes counted on Thursday night, South Africa was on the precipice of an era of national coalition government. The ANC had 42.6% of the vote, with the pro-business Democratic Alliance on 23.8%.

‘I just need change’: voters voice discontent as South Africa goes to polls
Wed, 29 May 2024 18:20:44 GMT

ANC majority in national election at risk for first time since 1990s as unemployment, corruption and power cuts erode support

In the heart of Soweto, at the president’s home voting station, support for the African National Congress (ANC) was everywhere as South Africa went to the polls, with many voters wearing the party’s bright yellow and speaking of their families’ generational loyalty to the movement that fought to end apartheid.

However, even here, there were voters who had turned against the ANC, as it risked losing its majority in national elections on Wednesday for the first time since Nelson Mandela led it to power in South Africa’s first fully democratic vote in 1994.

River East, River West by Aube Rey Lescure review – all change in China
Fri, 31 May 2024 08:00:34 GMT

Shortlisted for the Women’s prize, this immersive debut tells an intergenerational story about coming of age in a country that’s rapidly growing

A country (China) and two characters – Alva, a mixed-race teenager in Shanghai, and Lu Fang, her new stepfather, an older Chinese businessman – come of age in Aube Rey Lescure’s debut. Exploring change, class mobility and capitalism, it is threaded together with dual timelines: Shanghai, 2007, and Qingdao, 1985. Told in turns through the perspectives of Alva and Lu Fang respectively, it follows the story and trajectory of how their “pretend family, a tangled web of transactions”, came to be. What are the consequences of making choices in a world where the “very idea of choice was monstrous”? “Was it so easy, Alva wondered, to pretend yourself into another life, even when the rest of the world knew it was a farce?”

In 2007, 14-year-old Alva – the daughter of an American expat mother and a Chinese father she never knew – is raging with hormones and teenage tantrums. The novel opens with her mother’s wedding to Lu Fang – their landlord – and Alva’s vocal disapproval of their new life. Flashback to 1985 in alternating chapters, where Lu Fang is a young adult in the port city of Qingdao, working as a shipyard clerk with a pregnant wife, and meets Alva’s mother, Sloan, who has recently arrived from the United States. Both Alva and Lu Fang’s younger selves imagine worlds beyond their immediate surroundings and circumstances; here, the border is the self, school, home, district, and even China itself. The pages that follow hold an immersive, intergenerational story situating the social and racial dynamics of a changing and growing China – from its Cultural Revolution and economic boom to the start of the Great Recession. (As Lu Fang says: “I was born in 1949, the year the People’s Republic was founded. I’m as old as the new China.”)

India’s ‘sinking island’ looks to election for survival – in pictures
Fri, 31 May 2024 06:00:30 GMT

For many on Ghoramara, the general election is about the climate crisis and survival. The island, 150km south of Kolkata and named the ‘sinking island’ by the media, has lost nearly half its area to soil erosion in the past two decades and could disappear if a solution is not found.

As voters across India cast their ballots on issues ranging from the cost of living to jobs and religion, politicians trying to win votes in Ghoramara need to put the climate crisis to the fore as the island’s dwindling population fight to save their homes from the sea amid rising water levels and increasingly fierce storms

From 2019 to 2022 he won it four times a row, before a setback in 2023. Coming into the 2024 event from eight victories in nine tournaments, he was the strong favourite.

Wednesday’s third round was off script. Carlsen not only lost to India’s rising 18-year-old star Prggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, he was comprehensively outplayed in a 1 e4 c5 Sicilian which the teenager controlled with his centralised d5 knight.

‘Unliveable’: Delhi’s residents struggle to cope in record-breaking heat
Thu, 30 May 2024 16:05:16 GMT

Temperatures of more than 45C have left population of 29 million exhausted – but the poorest suffer most

As the water tanker drove into a crowded Delhi neighbourhood, a ruckus erupted. Dozens of residents ran frantically behind it, brandishing buckets, bottles and hoses, and jumped on top of it to get even a drip of what was stored inside. Temperatures that day had soared to 49C (120F), the hottest day on record – and in many places across India’s vast capital, home to more than 29 million people, water had run out.

Every morning, Tripti, a social health worker who lives in the impoverished enclave of Vivekanand Camp, is among those who has to stand under the blazing sun with buckets and pots, waiting desperately for the water tanker to arrive.

The fake news divide: how Modi’s rule is fracturing India – video
Thu, 30 May 2024 09:31:48 GMT

India is in the final stages of a general election, and almost one billion people are registered to vote. The country's prime minister ,Narendra Modi, has been in power for more than 10 years, and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) is seeking a third term.

But critics of Modi and the BJP say his government has become increasingly authoritarian, fracturing the country along religious lines and threatening India’s secular democracy. At the same time, the space for freedom of speech has been shrinking while disinformation and hate speech has exploded on social media.

The Guardian’s video team travelled through India to explore how fake news and censorship might be shaping the outcome of the election

How an Indian state became a testing ground for Hindu nationalism – podcast
Thu, 30 May 2024 02:00:16 GMT

Hannah Ellis-Petersen reports from Uttarakhand, which offers a glimpse into what the future might look like if the BJP retains its power in national elections

“One of the most significant elements of Modi’s rule is how his Hindu nationalist politics has reshaped the country,” the Guardian’s south Asia correspondent Hannah Ellis-Petersen tells Michael Safi. “Uttarakhand is a state where I think we’ve seen the real consequences of that narrative play out.”

Hannah explains how religious tensions have been stoked in the state of Uttarakhand through conspiracy theories, political rhetoric and the destruction of Muslim shrines and tombs. We hear about the rising violence against the Muslim minority in the area and why this election is a concerning time for them in the state.

Taiwan’s 160,000 active military personnel are vastly outnumbered by China’s 2 million-member armed forces, leading many civilians to turn to voluntary medical and combat training to protect themselves.

Four kids left: The Thai school swallowed by the sea – video
Wed, 15 May 2024 10:47:18 GMT

Ban Khun Samut Chin, a coastal village in Samut Prakan province, Thailand, has been slowly swallowed by the sea over the past few decades. This has led to the relocation of the school and many homes, resulting in a dwindling population. Currently, there are only four students attending the school, often leaving just one in each classroom. The village has experienced severe coastal erosion, causing 1.1-2km (0.5-1.2 miles) of shoreline to disappear since the mid-1950s

Friday briefing: Could Trump go to prison – and what does his conviction mean for the US election?
Fri, 31 May 2024 05:53:34 GMT

In today’s newsletter: after last night’s historic verdict, here’s what you need to know about the consequences

Sign up here for our daily newsletter, First Edition

Good morning. Donald Trump is a convicted criminal. A jury in New York unanimously found him guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in an attempt to cover up the alleged sexual encounter with Stormy Daniels that threatened his bid for the presidency in 2016. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime, and he could yet be the first convicted felon to be elected president. This is a historic moment, and its reverberations have barely begun to be felt.

Today’s newsletter explains what it all means: the verdicts, the instant fundraising emails, and the consequences still to come. Here are the headlines.

Cancer research | Thousands of patients in England are to be fast-tracked into groundbreaking trials of personalised cancer vaccines in a world-first NHS “matchmaking” scheme to save lives. The jabs, which aim to provide a permanent cure, are custom-built for each patient in just a few weeks.

General election 2024 | Diane Abbott has not been treated “fairly or appropriately” by some Labour colleagues and should be allowed to stand again for the party at the election if she wishes to do so, Angela Rayner has said. Party apparatchiks will meet next week to agree on Labour’s full list of parliamentary candidates.

Israel | An investigative reporter with Israel’s leading leftwing newspaper, Haaretz, has said unnamed senior security officials threatened actions against him if he reported on attempts by the former head of the Mossad to intimidate the ex-prosecutor of the international criminal court.

London | A nine-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was shot by a hitman on a motorbike while eating with her family at a Turkish restaurant. Three men were also hit and wounded in the incident in Dalston, north-east London on Wednesday evening.

Ukraine | Joe Biden has allowed Ukraine to use some US-made weapons over one part of the Russian border, relaxing an important constraint on Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. The change is designed to allow Kyiv’s forces to defend against an offensive aimed at the city of Kharkiv.

‘Karma always get you’: New Yorkers react to verdict in Trump criminal trial
Fri, 31 May 2024 07:00:35 GMT

All opinions could be found on streets of New York City after conviction, including: ‘This is going to hand him the election’

The aftermath of the conviction of Donald Trump on 34 felony counts played out amid scenes of stress, jubilation and shock in Manhattan – the slice of New York that first made the former US president into a global celebrity and has now declared one of its most famous sons a guilty criminal.

Police cruisers tore downtown after jurors announced they’d reached a verdict in Trump’s hush-money trial, and many New Yorkers had been glued to their phones waiting for the decision to be relayed. Mayor Eric Adams tried to reassure citizens that authorities were prepared for unrest.

Former president calls verdict ‘a disgrace’ after being convicted in New York on all 34 counts of falsifying business records

Donald Trump has been found guilty of all 34 counts of falsifying business records in a criminal hush-money scheme to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

The verdict came after a jury deliberated for less than 12 hours in the unprecedented first criminal trial against a US president, current or former. Donald Trump hush-money trial: key testimony from inside the courtroom – video
Fri, 31 May 2024 02:35:05 GMT

Twelve jurors in New York have presented their fellow Americans with a simple question: are you willing to elect a convicted criminal to the White House?

On Thursday, Donald Trump was found guilty of all 34 counts of falsifying business records in a criminal hush-money scheme to influence the outcome of the 2016 election. The verdict makes him the first president, current or former, to be found guilty of felony crimes in the US's near 250-year history. Regardless, the conviction does not disqualify Trump as a presidential candidate or bar him from again sitting in the Oval Office.

Trump, who opted not to take the stand during the trial, has denied wrongdoing, railed against the proceedings and ahead of the verdict compared himself to a saint: “Mother Teresa could not beat these charges. The charges are rigged,” he said on Wednesday. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, is expected to appeal the verdict.

The Guardian’s Sam Levine has been in court over the last several weeks covering all the developments – here are three testimonies he found most memorable.

I had convinced myself Trump would never be convicted. I’m happy I was wrong | Moira Donegan
Thu, 30 May 2024 23:34:10 GMT

So rarely held to account, Trump has finally had a small taste of justice. This is a good day for American democracy

The former president of the United States, and the presumptive Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election, is now a convicted felon 34 times over. In New York on Thursday, 12 jurors found Donald Trump guilty of falsifying business records in order to influence the 2016 election. It is the first criminal conviction for Trump, who has also been charged with felonies in three other criminal cases currently under way in Florida, Georgia and Washington DC. He is the first former president to ever stand trial on criminal charges.

The jury found that Trump, who denies the charges, falsified business records in 2016 and 2017, when he made a series of payments to his lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, to reimburse Cohen for a payment of $130,000 that he had made to Stormy Daniels, a pornographic film actor, in exchange for Daniels’ silence about a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Paying Daniels to shut up, the prosecution had argued, amounted to a conspiracy to influence the election. Labeling the payments to Cohen, as Trump and his flacks did, as payments of Cohen’s “legal retainer” was a fraud committed in furtherance of that conspiracy.

The ex-president lost a hush-money trial in New York. But if you think that will keep him from the Oval Office, think again

On Thursday, a Manhattan jury found Donald Trump guilty of all 34 counts of conspiracy and fraud in a case stemming from payments that the former president arranged to cover up an affair with the adult film actor Stormy Daniels. The presumptive Republican nominee is now a convicted felon.

He was already an adjudicated sexual predator and fraudster. Trump once quipped that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and get away with it. Maybe not.

Momentous change is afoot within Europe’s far right. Just as voters across 27 countries prepare to go to the polls in EU elections, a split over the German far right’s allegiance to the Third Reich is driving a realignment.

The far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) group in the European parliament last week expelled the entire Alternative for Germany (AfD) faction from its ranks after a furore involving the leading AfD candidate Maximiian Krah.

Malicious actors used the company’s generative AI models to create and post propaganda content across social media platforms, and to translate their content into different languages. None of the campaigns gained traction or reached large audiences, according to the report.

“The president recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine is able to use US-supplied weapons for counter-fire purposes in the Kharkiv region so Ukraine can hit back against Russian forces that are attacking them or preparing to attack them,” a US official said.

Greens keep it short and sweet to avoid the don’t-want-to-knows | Marina Hyde

The more people find out about the Green party’s policies, the more they tend to switch off. So today’s campaign launch was over in 15 minutes

The Green party campaign launch took place this morning in Bristol and lasted precisely 15 minutes. I’m not saying that going to Bristol for 15 minutes was the least green thing I’ve done all year, but it may make the top 10. I’m very sorry. I didn’t even manage to plant a question as offset.

Anyway, the launch featured some of the things you might expect – knitted green rosettes, a lot of jolly good points about sewage – and some you mightn’t. All the many ”vote Green” signs were plastic (maybe they don’t count as single-use) while the lecterns lit up (energy-efficient bulbs, perhaps).

On the Zero-Day Market
2024-05-24T11:07:53Z

New paper: “Zero Progress on Zero Days: How the Last Ten Years Created the Modern Spyware Market“:

Abstract: Spyware makes surveillance simple. The last ten years have seen a global market emerge for ready-made software that lets governments surveil their citizens and foreign adversaries alike and to do so more easily than when such work required tradecraft. The last ten years have also been marked by stark failures to control spyware and its precursors and components. This Article accounts for and critiques these failures, providing a socio-technical history since 2014, particularly focusing on the conversation about trade in zero-day vulnerabilities and exploits. Second, this Article applies lessons from these failures to guide regulatory efforts going forward. While recognizing that controlling this trade is difficult, I argue countries should focus on building and strengthening multilateral coalitions of the willing, rather than on strong-arming existing multilateral institutions into working on the problem. Individually, countries should focus on export controls and other sanctions that target specific bad actors, rather than focusing on restricting particular technologies. Last, I continue to call for transparency as a key part of oversight of domestic governments’ use of spyware and related components...
