Technology was once simply a tool—and a small one at that—used to amplify human intent and capacity. That was the story of the industrial revolution: we could control nature and build large, complex human societies, and the more we employed and mastered technology, the better things got. We don’t live in that world anymore. Not only has technology become entangled with the structure of society, but we also can no longer see the world around us without it. The separation is gone, and the control we thought we once had has revealed itself as a mirage. We’re in a transitional period of history right now...
Retired major general, 90, killed when his plane plunged into waters off Washington state’s San Juan Islands
Retired Maj Gen William Anders, the former Apollo 8 astronaut who took the famous Earthrise photo showing the planet as a shadowed blue marble from space in 1968, was killed Friday when the plane he was piloting alone plummeted into the waters off the San Juan Islands in Washington state. He was 90.
“The family is devastated,” said his son, retired air force Lt Col Greg Anders, who confirmed the death to the Associated Press. “He was a great pilot and we will miss him terribly.”

Restriction brought back to make improvements to checkpoint systems, according to Department for Transport
Six regional airports in the UK will temporarily reintroduce restrictions on carrying liquids over 100ml, the Department for Transport has said.
The change will come into effect from midnight on Sunday, and will affect passengers travelling from London City, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, Southend and Teesside airports.

As Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith call time on their grimly hilarious TV anthology, they and their collaborators from a decade of darkness discuss how it was all done
A creepy Tim Key stuffed inside a wardrobe, a miserable Diane Morgan on a pedalo, a sozzled Tamzin Outhwaite in a karaoke booth and a corrupt David Morrissey in a football referee’s dressing room. Along with trains, call centres, alpine chalets, caravans and even an escape room, these are just some of the memorable scenes and settings from the nine series of Inside No 9. With slightly less pleasing numerical symmetry, the show now finally draws to a close this week after, not nine, but 10 years.
Over that period, the show’s writers and creators, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith, have conjured up 55 standalone episodes spanning dark comedy, gothic horror and Pinteresque drama, all signed off with what has become a customary plot twist. Loaded with guest stars that have included everyone from Jason Isaacs to Peter Kay and Jenna Coleman to Sophie Okonedo, the show has proved always unpredictable but consistently compelling. The result of this run, according to the show’s producer Adam Tandy, is “unprecedented”: it is now BBC Two’s longest-running current comedy.

Raja Shehadeh is at his home in the West Bank city of Ramallah. In the six months since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza he estimates that he has not ventured further than 16km, which is a grim sort of house arrest for a human rights lawyer turned writer whose wanderings have underpinned his life’s work: to demonstrate the Palestinians’ deep relationship with, and entitlement to, the land of their ancestors.
“It’s a quiet existence, but it’s very confining,” he says, over video link from his book-littered study. “Travelling is dangerous, because the settlers are all over the place. And there are closures everywhere, which is a nightmare.” It’s not that he thinks that, as an eminent advocate and commentator, he is in any more danger than anyone else. “The Israelis are indiscriminate in this way … They just don’t care how well known I am or not well known. In so many places people have been killed and nothing has happened.”

Alison Aye’s work will be seen alongside 481 other new exhibitors at the Summer Exhibition
Artist Alison Aye had a surprising reaction to being accepted for this year’s Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy. Founded in 1769, it’s the world’s oldest open submission show – a chance for hobbyist painters to hang next to Turner prize-winners and artists such as Tracey Emin and David Hockney, with everything for sale.
The 58-year-old textile and collage artist, who is based in London, has submitted work to the Royal Academy (RA) over the last 31 years, and always been rejected. But when, this year, she found out she had finally succeeded, she felt conflicted. “It’s the establishment acknowledging me and I don’t know if I like it,” she said. “There’s a part of me that thinks being on the losing side is all right.”

New research shows that severe withdrawal symptoms are far less common than thought. Depression needs treating
I have been prescribing antidepressants since 1991. Like most medications, they are imperfect tools: they have side-effects and don’t work for everybody. Some patients report negative effects, or that their depression does not improve, and they may require changing to a different antidepressant. For those they do help, antidepressants undoubtedly improve depression and reduce the risk of suicide.
Very rarely, in my clinical practice, do patients complain that they cannot stop their medication because of the symptoms when they try. Unpleasant physical or emotional experiences for a few days or a couple of weeks after stopping antidepressants, yes: dizziness, headache, nausea, insomnia, irritability, vivid dreams, electricity-like sensations or rapid mood swings. But patients who could not stop the antidepressant because of these symptoms? In my 33 years of clinical practice, I can recall them on the fingers of one hand.

This is the wail of the floating voter. I start every election a deliberate floater. An open mind staves off tedium. The only alternative is going on holiday. For a radical, to float is also to enjoy a moment of hope. Might there be, somewhere in the dark cloud of current politics, just a glimmer of light?
In their first week or so, most election campaigns hit rock bottom. So far in this one there are still no manifestos. Tuesday’s TV debate was truly ghastly. Rishi Sunak deployed the Brexit leaver’s tactic of twisting statistics. Keir Starmer’s pitch amounted to little more than a new feeder for the Downing Street cat.

It is called a general election, but Friday night’s multiparty debate was a reminder that it is also a messy array of specific elections.
Over on one side of the stage, Penny Mordaunt and Angela Rayner traded blows in the prize fight between incumbent power and the only challenger that can supply a replacement government. First on defence, then on tax and the cost of living, the Tory leader of the house piled into the deputy Labour leader in full Westminster pugilism mode. Rayner defended herself gamely and landed a few jabs in return. More than once Mishal Husain, a coolly professional umpire throughout, had to separate the combatants.

Warning comes amid visits by Israeli officials to region bordering Lebanon and speculation about an operation
The Biden administration has warned Israel that widening its conflict against the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah would risk drawing in Iran, even as Israeli officials said last week they had completed preparations for an operation if it were required.
According to an Axios report quoting two unnamed senior US officials, the administration has told Israel it does not believe “a limited war” in Lebanon or a “small regional war” is a realistic option because it would be difficult to end and be likely to spin out of control.

A prominent opponent of the Rwandan president, Paul Kagame, has been barred from standing in next month’s election to challenge his three-decade rule.
Diane Rwigara, the leader of the People Salvation Movement, who was also barred in 2017, launched her election bid in May and submitted her candidacy last week. Her name was missing from the provisional list of candidates announced by the electoral commission on Thursday.

Refugee camps under fire across region, according to reports
At least nine Yemeni employees of UN agencies have been detained by Yemen’s Houthi rebels under unclear circumstances, authorities said on Friday, reports the Associated Press (AP). The news agency adds that others working for aid groups are also likely to have been taken.
The detentions come as the Houthis, who seized Yemen’s capital nearly a decade ago and have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since shortly after, have been targeting shipping throughout the Red Sea corridor over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.
The AP reports that the Houthis have cracked down at dissent in Yemen, including recently sentencing 44 people to death.
Regional officials, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to brief journalists, confirmed the UN detentions.

Microsoft recently caught state-backed hackers using its generative AI tools to help with their attacks. In the security community, the immediate questions weren’t about how hackers were using the tools (that was utterly predictable), but about how Microsoft figured it out. The natural conclusion was that Microsoft was spying on its AI users, looking for harmful hackers at work.

To mint an NFT token, you must pay some amount of gas fee to process the transaction on the Etherum blockchain, but you can mint your NFT on a different blockchain called Polygon to avoid paying gas fees. This option is available on OpenSea and this simply denotes that your NFT will only be able to trade using Polygon's blockchain and not Etherum's blockchain. Mintable allows you to mint NFTs for free without paying any gas fees.
The answer is no. Non-Fungible Tokens are minted on the blockchain using cryptocurrencies such as Etherum, Solana, Polygon, and so on. Once a Non-Fungible Token is minted, the transaction is recorded on the blockchain and the contract or license is awarded to whoever has that Non-Fungible Token in their wallet.

Do you have a good recipe for ras el hanout? It’s quite expensive to buy, but we may already have all the spices in the cupboard.
Ras el hanout is a brilliant Arabic spice mix. I always add some to any meat patty or kofta mix, and it’s also lovely stirred into oil or butter and rubbed all over a chicken before it’s roasted; traybakes also love a sprinkle of ras el hanout before going into the oven, be that with chickpeas, cauliflower, cubed butternut squash and so on.
The name roughly translates to “head of the shop” or “top shelf”, so in other words it’s traditionally made with whatever spices the shop or blender considers their best. As a result, recipes vary wildly, though most include some or all of black pepper, cardamom, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, ginger, turmeric and nutmeg. There are also regional variations to bear in mind: in Tunisia, say, it tends to be milder and include dried rose petals, whereas Moroccan ras el hanout has more of a kick.

Imagine a world in which you can do transactions and many other things without having to give your personal information. A world in which you don’t need to rely on banks or governments anymore. Sounds amazing, right? That’s exactly what blockchain technology allows us to do.
It’s like your computer’s hard drive. blockchain is a technology that lets you store data in digital blocks, which are connected together like links in a chain.
Blockchain technology was originally invented in 1991 by two mathematicians, Stuart Haber and W. Scot Stornetta. They first proposed the system to ensure that timestamps could not be tampered with.
A few years later, in 1998, software developer Nick Szabo proposed using a similar kind of technology to secure a digital payments system he called “Bit Gold.” However, this innovation was not adopted until Satoshi Nakamoto claimed to have invented the first Blockchain and Bitcoin.
A blockchain is a distributed database shared between the nodes of a computer network. It saves information in digital format. Many people first heard of blockchain technology when they started to look up information about bitcoin.
Blockchain is used in cryptocurrency systems to ensure secure, decentralized records of transactions.
Blockchain allowed people to guarantee the fidelity and security of a record of data without the need for a third party to ensure accuracy.
