The British poetâs second collection is an exacting examination of the past, the present and an uncertain future
Poetry is a form of scrutiny, an inquiry that, when it succeeds, advances further than it is possible to go in prose. Rowland Bagnallâs attractively questing second collection is an investigation of consciousness. Like Virginia Woolf, he records moments of being although, unlike her, his moments are likely to be guarded and seldom ecstatic and to involve openly philosophical reckoning. He is curious about how to situate himself â and by implication us â in time and space. The recognition that time can neither hold or be held is at once an ongoing preoccupation â and a provocation. In The Hare, he lends the day a human quality: âI wake into the morning / and find unanimous spring / and the windows are pale with filtered light / and the day asks, How shall I survive myself?â Time runs out and into Bagnallâs writing and, at the same time, each piece is a moment of standing still (the day can survive in a poem).
The poems themselves seem to stand to attention in this fine, exacting and hyper-vigilant project in which he cross-examines the present, past and most often (he is in his 30s) an unsteady future.

âDo you ever get seasick?â Timm Schirmer, a 27-year-old DJ with a fabulous blond moustache, asks me shortly before we board the Techno Train. âWhen youâre dancing on the train it can feel like youâre at sea, because you canât always see that youâre moving.â Worryingly, I have indeed spent many a past holiday retching on boats. But Timmâs question comes after Iâve paid âŹ100 for a non-refundable ticket for what social media suggests is the most intense train ride in Europe. I knew it wouldnât be plain sailing.
Launched in 2019 by the Nuremberg nightclub Haus 33, for whom Tim DJs, the Techno Train runs twice a year and has only two official stops: the start and the finish. We depart Nurembergâs Frankenstadion station at 4pm and travel about 100km west towards the city of WĂźrzburg, then loop back and pull into Nuremberg Central Station at 11pm.
