Prog rockers sussed out Boris Johnson years ago | Brief letters
Thu, 22 Jul 2021 16:43:01 GMT

The price of ‘freedom’ | New phrases | Genesis | Brexit plank | Spelling disaster

Let me get this right: lockdown was damaging the economy through the restrictions imposed on trade and commerce. So “freedom” is declared. But the accompanying upsurge of the Johnson variant and increase in infections, and ensuing “pingdemic”, brings the economy to its knees (Supermarkets struggle to stock shelves as ‘pingdemic’ havoc spreads, 21 July). Something wrong there, surely?

• I always greatly enjoy reading Aditya Chakrabortty and I was delighted to discover a new phrase: “coprophagic cynicism” (After Covid, the climate crisis will be the next thing the right says we ‘just have to live with’, 22 July). I intend to use it in conversation as soon as possible and I do not expect to wait long.

Fri, 23 Jul 2021 00:00:00 EDT
(Ruhr-University Bochum) A new optogenetic tool, a protein that can be controlled by light, has been characterized by researchers at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. They used an opsin - a protein that occurs in the brain and eyes - from zebrafish and introduced it into the brain of mice. Unlike other optogenetic tools, this opsin is not switched on but rather switched off by light. Experiments also showed that the tool could be suitable for investigating changes in the brain that are responsible for the development of epilepsy.

Kimberly-Clark profit slides to miss estimates as sales fall short amid reduced demand for tissue
Fri, 23 Jul 2021 11:50:00 GMT

Kimberly-Clark Corp. shares slid 3.9% in premarket trade Friday, after the consumer goods company missed earnings estimates for the second quarter and lowered its guidance, as higher costs and reduced demand for consumer tissue weighed. The company posted net income of $404 million, or $1.19 a share, in the quarter, down from $681 million, or $1.99 a share, in the year-earlier period. Adjusted per-share earnings came to $1.47, missing the $1.71 FactSet consensus. Sales edged up 2% to $4.722 billion from $4.612 billion, also below the $4.766 billion FactSet consensus. Chief Executive Mike Hsu said the numbers reflect continued pandemic-driven volatility. "We are facing significantly higher input costs and a reversal in consumer tissue volumes from record growth in the year ago period as consumers and retailers in North America continued to reduce home and retail inventory," Hsu said in a statement. "While we look forward to a return to a more normalized environment, we have moved decisively to take pricing actions to mitigate inflationary headwinds and continue to prudently manage costs." The company is now expecting full-year adjusted EPS of $6.65 to $6.90, down from prior guidance of $7.30 to $7.55. It expects sales to grow 1% to 4%, down from prior guidance of 3% to 5%. It also expects to complete a restructuring program in 2021 and to book charges of $2.0 billion to $2.1 billion. Shares have fallen 0.1% in the year through Thursday, while the S&P 500 has gained 16%.

The Guardian view on Pegasus spyware: the export of self-censorship | Editorial

Global rules are needed to govern the proliferation of these weapons of mass repression

Last year saw the highest global military spending – nearly $2tn – since 1988. More than half of that was expenditure by the United States and its allies. Defence capabilities are closely guarded national assets. A web of rules has grown up around the export of arms and their use. No country wants its most lethal weapons being turned upon themselves.

Yet there are at least 500 private companies that operate, largely unregulated, and sell intrusive software to oppressive regimes that spy on and harass their critics. These anti-democratic acts ought to be enough to bring such trade to a halt. However it has continued; the industry says these tools are for fighting crime and terrorism. What happens when, instead, governments opt to use these capabilities not just on their people, but on the democratic west?

Natural-gas prices extend decline; EIA reports a weekly supply climb of 49 billion cubic feet
Thu, 22 Jul 2021 14:37:37 GMT

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on Thursday that domestic supplies of natural gas rose by 49 billion cubic feet for the week ended July 16. IHS Markit had forecast an increase of 51 billion cubic feet. Total stocks now stand at 2.678 trillion cubic feet, down 532 billion cubic feet from a year ago and 176 billion cubic feet below the five-year average, the government said. Following the data, August natural gas continued to trade lower, losing 3.5 cents, or 0.9%, at $3.92 per million British thermal units. Prices were at $3.93 shortly before the data.

The Republican governor of Alabama has said it is “time to start blaming the unvaccinated folks” for rising cases of Covid-19, amid concern that months of misinformation over the need and efficacy of vaccines is fueling a resurgence of coronavirus infections in several states.

Kay Ivey said that vaccines are “the greatest weapon we have to fight Covid” and added that a surge in new cases of the coronavirus in Alabama is due to a reluctance among many people in the state to get inoculated.

Germany’s public health institute has said it is putting Spain and the Netherlands on a list of high-incidence countries for coronavirus, meaning new restrictions for unvaccinated travellers.

The move by the Robert Koch Institute, effective from Tuesday, means anyone arriving from high-incidence countries with new infection rates of 200 or more per 100,000 people in the past seven days is required to go into a 10-day quarantine, which can be cut to five days upon a negative test.

‘Anything can happen in sailing’: Burnet sets golden goal in Tokyo
Fri, 23 Jul 2021 11:00:53 GMT

Anna Burnet and John Gimson will compete in the mixed Nacra in Tokyo with confidence in their ability to add to Team GB’s enviable record in the sport

We shall never know, more’s the pity, what advice Sir Peter Blake would have given his niece as she prepared for an Olympic debut. What is at least certain is that Anna Burnet cherishes her family connection with Sir Peter, a famed New Zealand yachtsman who was shot dead at the mouth of the Amazon by pirates aged 53. Burnet was just nine at the time. She depicts a “very famous sailor” with a hint of understatement; Blake was a world record holder and twice America’s Cup winner.

“I think of him a lot, he has always been an inspiration,” Burnet says of her uncle. “And the rest of my family, they are all really into their sailing so everyone has been so supportive. It would be amazing to win a medal for them; they are already so happy that we are involved in an Olympics but to bring something back would just be incredible for all of them.”

President Moïse’s killing leaves Haiti less stable but as elitist as ever | Natalie Meade
Fri, 23 Jul 2021 10:20:51 GMT

Any reform after the assassination of Jovenel Moïse will depend on the US re-evaluating its interests in the country

The assassination of Jovenel Moïse, Haiti’s president, marks another point in the years-long power struggle that pitted his loyalists against activists and working-class families, exhausted by years of social strife and gang violence. On Saturday, his wife Martine Moïse, injured in the attack, returned home to the Caribbean state to face speculation about her own political career. Meanwhile, the authorities still search for the motive for her husband’s killing.

At least 20 people have now been arrested in connection with the murder, including Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a Haitian-American self-proclaimed pastor who lives in South Florida, and who allegedly issued the order for the assassination. According to reporting by the Washington Post, Sanon had ambitions to become president of his homeland. He had vowed to transform the country into a “free and open society” with an ambitious $83bn redevelopment plan for Haiti. His defenders say, however, a plot to kill Moïse was never part of the masterplan.

Ted Lasso season two review – the most joyous show on TV scores again
Fri, 23 Jul 2021 08:00:48 GMT

The footballing comedy digs deeper in its second run, with a frosty new foe for lovely coach Ted to crack … but it still stays true to its glorious, feelgood spirit

Like Schitt’s Creek, whose equally warm-hearted comedy about overcoming adversity helped to inoculate us against the first panic of the pandemic, the first season of Ted Lasso (Apple TV+) offered succour to many as we moved through the year. I feel it is incumbent upon me therefore to begin with an assurance. Mark this and mark it well: yea, though the first 15 minutes of the season two opener be a charmless thing; though thy soul shall start to shrivel at the thought that the one good thing 2020 gave us, the one balm to the psychic wounds endlessly inflicted, is losing its way – keep the faith and thou shalt be rewarded. By the end of Ted Lasso’s first episode, the show that kept so many of us going has found its feet and is racing up the league tables towards its rightful place once more.

For those of you who have not yet had the pleasure (and please do indulge yourself as soon as you can; I would be surprised if it did not improve life for you at least a little), Ted Lasso is – simply put – the tale of a good man doing good things. The title character, played with unfaltering lightness of touch and an utter lack of cynicism by Jason Sudeikis (also a co-creator of the show), is an American football coach brought over by an English football club’s manager, Rebecca Welton (a resplendently icy Hannah Waddingham), to transform the team’s fortunes. In fact she hopes his lack of experience will cause them to fail, thus punishing her horrible ex-husband who loved the club but lost it in the divorce settlement. But all obstacles gradually fall before Ted, his optimism, his energy and his unshakeable belief in humanity, regardless of the fact that his own marriage is breaking up and that he is now in an unfathomable country which greets triumph and disaster alike with cries of “Wanker!” and keeps trying to make him like tea.

Fears for Indonesia provinces as Delta variant spreads out of Java

Shortages of beds and oxygen as Covid variant reaches areas with weaker healthcare systems

Scenes that have for months haunted hospitals across Indonesia’s Java island are appearing across the country, as the Delta variant spreads to new provinces, causing shortages of beds and oxygen.

Images have circulated on social media of overstretched hospitals in both Papua and Kalimantan. One video shows a patient lying inside an ambulance, with two of his relatives sitting next to him. “The people need help. [I] have brought them to hospitals but all of them rejected us. [The hospitals] said there is no oxygen. How come the government can’t provide oxygen?” the ambulance driver, who recorded the video, can be heard saying. Jacinda Ardern announces Australian travel bubble suspension as Covid outbreak worsens – video
Fri, 23 Jul 2021 06:42:27 GMT

New Zealand will suspend its quarantine-free travel bubble with Australia for two months, as the country grapples with a number of serious outbreaks of Covid-19. Travel with the states of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia had already been paused but will now expand to the entire country. At a press briefing on Friday, the prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, said because of the Delta variant there was 'greater risk now … than when we opened the travel bubble'. While Ardern said she remained committed to the travel bubble, Ardern added 'Covid has changed and so must we'

Violence against Africa’s children is rising. It stains our collective conscience | Graça Machel
Fri, 23 Jul 2021 06:01:45 GMT

We must apply our own home-grown initiatives if we are to curb abuses of Africa’s most vulnerable

Of all the unspeakable injustices suffered by Africa’s children – and I’ve witnessed many – violence is surely the worst because it is almost entirely preventable. Africa’s children suffer many hardships, including poverty, hunger and disease. Violence against children is avoidable, yet young people in Africa, especially girls, continue to live with sexual violence, child marriage, female genital mutilation, forced labour, corporal punishment and countless other forms of abuse.

After decades spent trying to improve young people’s life chances, I had hoped to see at the very least a significant reduction in violence that threatens children. It is now 31 years since the adoption of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and we have seen some governments putting into place laws and policies aimed at ending violence against children. There have also been efforts, though insufficient, towards eradicating female genital mutilation and child marriage, which cause untold lifelong suffering.

Argentina threatens to cancel deal for Sputnik vaccine as Russia fails to deliver
Thu, 22 Jul 2021 18:39:33 GMT

Moscow owes 18.5m doses, leaving Argentina in a ‘very critical situation’ with only 12% fully vaccinated, leaked letter reveals

Argentina’s gamble on Sputnik V vaccine has left it in a “very critical situation” because of Russia’s failure to fulfill delivery commitments, according to an official letter to Moscow leaked on Thursday.

Russia owes Argentina 18.5m doses of its Sputnik V jab, over two-thirds of them vital second-component doses.

Only 12% of Argentinians are fully vaccinated so far, partly due to failed Sputnik deliveries of its second component. Another 37% have received only a single dose.

This compares disastrously with double-dose vaccination rates of over 60% in neighbouring Chile and Uruguay, countries that did not bet so heavily on the Russian vaccine.

Its low two-dose vaccination rate leaves Argentina particularly exposed to the arrival of the Delta variant. Neighbouring Uruguay, meanwhile, has already approved moving to a three-dose regimen.

Aid is not helping development in Tanzania | Letter
Thu, 22 Jul 2021 16:43:11 GMT

The country is one of the largest recipients of western aid, and yet poverty and unemployment remain rife, write two healthcare professionals

In response to Benny Dembitzer’s letter (20 July), we are currently working in Tanzania, one of the largest recipients of western aid in the world. We are doing research with the Hadza people, investigating the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in that population. In comparison to our observations from 2018, it appears that very little development has occurred in Tanzania. If anything, Tanzanians appear to be poorer and there appears to be more unemployed people now, which, given the challenges of Covid, is even more worrying. This highlights that the current aid model is not fit for purpose and western governments should rethink the way they support Tanzania and other countries urgently.

In the medical field, we are finding that progress has been halted, and probably reversed. One of the causes is that the rich world takes so many doctors, nurses and other health professionals from the developing world. Countries such as Tanzania have educated these professionals at their expense. We collect the ripe fruits.

This is an interesting development:

Just days after President Biden demanded that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia shut down ransomware groups attacking American targets, the most aggressive of the groups suddenly went off-line early Tuesday.

[…]

Gone was the publicly available “happy blog” the group maintained, listing some of its victims and the group’s earnings from its digital extortion schemes. Internet security groups said the custom-made sites - think of them as virtual conference rooms — where victims negotiated with REvil over how much ransom they would pay to get their data unlocked also disappeared. So did the infrastructure for making payments...

China Taking Control of Zero-Day Exploits
2021-07-14T11:04:46Z

China is making sure that all newly discovered zero-day exploits are disclosed to the government.

Under the new rules, anyone in China who finds a vulnerability must tell the government, which will decide what repairs to make. No information can be given to “overseas organizations or individuals” other than the product’s manufacturer.

No one may “collect, sell or publish information on network product security vulnerabilities,” say the rules issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China and the police and industry ministries.

This just blocks the cyber-arms trade. It doesn’t prevent researchers from telling the products’ companies, even if they are outside of China...

How residential schools in Canada robbed Indigenous children of their identity and lives – video
Thu, 01 Jul 2021 12:53:28 GMT

In Canada, more than 1,000 unmarked graves have been discovered on the grounds of former church-run residential schools, where an estimated 150,000 First Nations children were sent as part of a campaign of forced assimilation for more than a century until 1996.

A historic truth and reconciliation commission was conducted in the 2000s. In 2015 it concluded that the residential school system amounted to cultural genocide and that unmarked graves would be found in the former school grounds, but the recent findings still shocked many Canadians and prompted calls for a new investigation. Leyland Cecco explains how the discovery is just the tip of the iceberg in uncovering Canada's traumatic colonial past

Many of Omar’s neighbours also lost loved ones, and search through the rubble for possessions, after a war which killed more than 250 people in Israel and Gaza, the vast majority of them Palestinians
