Scientists sound warning note over malaria drug resistance in Africa
Thu, 15 Apr 2021 09:19:48 GMT

Rwanda study raises fears erosion of efficacy may have begun, with children at greatest risk

Resistance to malaria drugs in Africa may be starting to take hold, according to a study that maps changes similar to those seen a decade ago when drug resistance spread in south-east Asia.

In Cambodia and neighbouring countries, the artemisinin drug compounds widely used against malaria are no longer always effective. The falciparum malaria parasites have developed genetic mutations that allow them to evade the drugs. There has been great concern that drug resistance could spread to Africa, which has the highest burden of cases of this type of malaria – and the highest toll of child deaths from it.

20 years of Observer Food Monthly: how the wine trade was all shook up
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 10:30:00 GMT

Local grapes, indie producers, back to basics… wine has seen a world of change in the past 20 years

The supposedly sedate, conservative world of wine has been anything but in the years since Philip Schofield told OFM’s Tim Atkin about his passion for claret as the pair toured his purpose-built cellar in the magazine’s first wine column in April 2001.

Back then, France was still fending off the New World charge that would see it lose its position as the biggest seller of wine in the UK’s wine shops to Australia, with much press fanfare, in 2002, before being relegated into third place by the USA, (specifically California) in 2008.

The Covid crisis: some people think it’s all over … it isn’t
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 09:41:43 GMT

A new reality check is coming unless the west replicates its ‘whatever-it-takes approach’ to help poorer countries cope

Denial. Panic. False dawn. Relief mingled with a decent dollop of euphoria. Britain’s response to Covid-19 has moved through distinct phases, and there are at least two more to come. Despite the success of the vaccine programme, a look around the world – to India, to Chile, to Brazil, to France and Germany – can lead to only one conclusion: this is not over yet.

The early stages of the crisis are now easy to document. The denial phase lasted from the first cases of Covid-19 being reported in China towards the end of 2019 until the middle of March 2020. Initially, perhaps, some scepticism was warranted because there had been talk of global pandemics in the past that had not lived up to their horror-show billing.

Downing Street race report is an insult to workers, say union leaders

General secretaries representing 5 million workers urge the government to reject findings of the Tony Sewell commission

In a letter seen by the Observer, 33 trade union general secretaries representing more than 5 million workers have urged the government to “pick a different path”, noting that “there is no conflict between defending working-class interests and pushing for equality for BME [black and minority ethnic] workers. Today’s working class is multi-ethnic and multi-faith.”

The Observer view on the lobbying scandal engulfing the government | Observer editorial
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 05:00:54 GMT

Politicians will continue to line their pockets until a ministerial code is strictly enforced and breaches are punished

When David Cameron predicted in 2010 that lobbying was “the next big scandal waiting to happen”, he could not have envisaged that a decade later he would be at the heart of it. But that is exactly where he is: a former prime minister who has traded his time in public office to accept a lucrative role at now-collapsed financial services firm Greensill Capital, lobbying former colleagues for access to government schemes that would have helped protect his financial interests in the company.

Boris Johnson is lying to the DUP and to himself | Letters
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 05:00:54 GMT
Northern Ireland will be beset by violence and unrest until the prime minister accepts the reality of the protocol

Jonathan Powell reminded us of Boris Johnson’s pledge to the DUP that he would never agree to a border in the Irish Sea, only to do precisely that when he negotiated the Northern Ireland protocol to “get Brexit done” (“Peace in Northern Ireland is in danger – Johnson’s lies and inaction offer no help”, Comment). Loyalists in Northern Ireland feel betrayed and we are witnessing the consequences playing out in rising anger and violence. The protocol is now enshrined in legislation and all interested parties have an obligation to make it work in order to reduce the tensions it is causing.

However, there is one stumbling block: Johnson’s stubborn refusal to admit that there is an effective trade border in the Irish Sea. In addition to lying to the DUP, he continues to lie to himself. Until Johnson accepts the reality of what the protocol means in practice, and stops playing cowardly political games, there is little chance of making it work as it should and the unrest will continue.

Elon Musk's SpaceX wins $2.9 billion NASA moon landing contract
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 20:30:07 GMT

Privately held Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX, was selected by NASA on Friday to move forward in developing a human landing system to carry the next two U.S. astronauts to the moon "and pave the way for sustainable lunar exploration." That's under NASA's Artemis program, which aims to return humans on the moon, collaborating with commercial and international partners, and eventually send astronauts to Mars. Elon Musk is chief executive on SpaceX as well as Silicon Valley electric-car maker Tesla Inc. SpaceX in February announced plans to send four space tourists to orbit later this year on a mission to raise awareness for a children's hospital. Last month, the company's prototype Mars rocket Starship broke apart while attempting to land.

Squarespace files for direct listing
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 18:21:58 GMT

Squarespace Inc. filed paperwork Friday for a direct-listing that would enable shares of the website-design company to trade on the New York Stock Exchange without the company raising money through a traditional initial public offering. Squarespace, which makes tools for building and hosting websites, generated revenue of $621.1 million in 2020, up from $484.8 million in 2019. The company is profitable but saw its net income decline to $30.6 million in 2020 from $58.2 million a year earlier. Squarespace had 3.66 million unique subscriptions to its platform as of the end of December. The company said in a filing that it's benefitting from a rise in online commerce and a growing interest from brands to develop better direct relationships with consumers. I worry constantly about the safety of my grown-up daughters | Dear Mariella
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 05:00:55 GMT

The dangers women face make your anxiety understandable, says Mariella Frostrup. However, you must – as we all must – keep worries to a minimum in order to live life

The dilemma I have four lovely children, all now adults and left home. I rarely worry about my sons, but I constantly, constantly fret about my daughters, who both live in shared houses in distant cities.

They are very good about keeping in touch, and sympathetic to my anxiety, but it is reaching unmanageable proportions. For example, if I look at WhatsApp, I might see that one daughter was on it, say, 30 minutes ago, but the other hasn’t been on it all day. I will then look to see when they were last active on Facebook. If she hasn’t been active on Facebook either, I will telephone her.

Facebook and fear in Manila: Maria Ressa’s fight for facts
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 05:00:54 GMT

Ex-CNN reporter and founder of the news site Rappler on life under the relentless social media assault of the Duterte regime

As terrible as the events were that played out on Capitol Hill on 6 January, Maria Ressa admits to feeling “a small amount of relief” about them. An ex-CNN bureau chief, and now the founder of her own news organisation, Rappler, she had spent the past two years sounding a warning about what she’d seen happen in her native country, the Philippines.

There, a Facebook-fuelled tsunami of lies had assisted an authoritarian into power. And she had seen where that had led: to opponents of the state being killed in their homes or turning up dead in ditches. As a Filipino American with a foot in both countries – she calls herself “the first of the CNN hybrids” – she was perfectly positioned to warn America about what happens when a populist president is allowed to spread out-of-control lies across a vast, unregulated tech platform. “A lie told a million times becomes a fact,” she repeated again and again.

The race for rare earth minerals: can Australia fuel the electric vehicle revolution?
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 20:00:15 GMT

China dominates supply of the elusive metals, which are vital to modern technology, but finding new sources is becoming a global priority

There are an estimated 1.4bn cars on the world’s roads today. Around 78m new cars are sold every year. To head off the worst effects of climate change, every single one will need to go electric eventually.

Whether it rolls off a production line in Fremont, California, or comes together in a vast megafactory in Qinghai, China, a colossal amount of human effort must go into building the components and obtaining their base minerals. In each car, for instance, there is roughly a kilogram of magnet providing the motion needed to fire engines and electrify windows. Roughly 30% of this material is made up of rare earth material known as neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr).

Eli Lilly asks FDA to revoke EUA for COVID antibody treatment alone to speed transition to combination therapy
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 10:48:03 GMT

Eli Lilly and Co. said Friday it is seeking a revocation of the emergency use authorization granted by U.S. regulators for its bamlanivimab antibody treatment for COVID-19 alone in order to complete the transition to bamlanivimab and etesevimab together. "Lilly made this request due to the evolving variant landscape in the U.S. and the full availability of bamlanivimab and etesevimab together," the company said in a statement. The combination has proved to be more effective in neutralizing the COVID-19 variants that have been detected in the U.S. after first emerging in the U.K., South Africa and Brazil, and that are more infectious than the original virus. The combination is also better at treating the rapidly growing B.1.427/B.1.429 California strain that currently accounts for 50% of virus cases in California and over 10% of cases in other states. "In the U.S., bamlanivimab alone should no longer be administered. However, sites of care should not dispose of bamlanivimab supply; instead, they should order etesevimab to pair with it," said Lilly. Bamlanivimab was the first neutralizing monoclonal antibody to receive an EUA from the FDA as a treatment for mild to moderate COVID-19 and more than 400,000 patients have been given it. Lilly estimates that has prevented more than 20,000 hospitalizations and at least 10,000 deaths during the peak of pandemic cases. Lily expects that in collaboration with Amgen Inc. , it can manufacture sufficient supply of the two antibodies to meet global supply needs. Lilly shares were up 0.6% premarket, and have gained 10% in the year-to-date, matching the S&P 500's gains.

CNIO researchers explain the toxicity of USP7 inhibitors, under development for cancer treatment
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 00:00:00 EDT
(Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO)) The researchers have discovered that USP7 inhibitors -under development by several pharmaceutical companies for the treatment of cancer- trigger a premature activation of cell cycle proteins, leading to uncontrolled cancer cell division and death.* The paper rejects the premise that the therapeutic efficacy of these inhibitors is due to their effects on activating the tumor suppressor protein P53, as currently accepted by the international scientific community. These results extend the potential use of USP7 inhibitors to a wider range of patients.

The FBI Is Now Securing Networks Without Their Owners’ Permission

In January, we learned about a Chinese espionage campaign that exploited four zero-days in Microsoft Exchange. One of the characteristics of the campaign, in the later days when the Chinese probably realized that the vulnerabilities would soon be fixed, was to install a web shell in compromised networks that would give them subsequent remote access. Even if the vulnerabilities were patched, the shell would remain until the network operators removed it.

Now, months later, many of those shells are still in place. And they’re being used by criminal hackers as well...

Jake Paul’s vapid boxing cosplay is a farce the sport could learn from | Bryan Armen Graham
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 10:15:00 GMT

The Youtube star has turned his professional boxing ‘career’ into an eyeball-grabbing, money-spinning spectacle. It may be a total farce, but all promoters should be taking notes

On Saturday night, the odious LA-based vlogger Jake Paul won his third professional boxing match with a first-round knockout of Ben Askren, a retired UFC fighter with no previous boxing experience. Paul, who boasts more than 20m subscribers on YouTube, sent his opponent crashing to the deck in the opening minutes of their scheduled eight-round cruiserweight fight with a looping right hand before referee Brian Stutts waved it off, perhaps a bit prematurely, after the 2008 US Olympian beat the count.

Google’s Project Zero Finds a Nation-State Zero-Day Operation
2021-04-08T11:06:53Z

Google’s Project Zero discovered, and caused to be patched, eleven zero-day exploits against Chrome, Safari, Microsoft Windows, and iOS. This seems to have been exploited by “Western government operatives actively conducting a counterterrorism operation”:

The exploits, which went back to early 2020 and used never-before-seen techniques, were “watering hole” attacks that used infected websites to deliver malware to visitors. They caught the attention of cybersecurity experts thanks to their scale, sophistication, and speed.

[…]

It’s true that Project Zero does not formally attribute hacking to specific groups. But the Threat Analysis Group, which also worked on the project, does perform attribution. Google omitted many more details than just the name of the government behind the hacks, and through that information, the teams knew internally who the hacker and targets were. It is not clear whether Google gave advance notice to government officials that they would be publicizing and shutting down the method of attack...

English Astronaut vlog: space food and fitness

ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer is preparing for his mission to the International Space Station, scheduled for launch in late 2021. This mission is known as Cosmic Kiss.

In this video log from his current training base at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, USA, Matthias shows a space food tasting session and shares how astronauts maintain their fitness for a safe return to Earth.

Astronauts exercise for two hours a day, six days a week while on the International Space Station to combat muscle and bone loss caused by an extended stay in microgravity. Diet also plays an important role in maintaining physical and mental wellbeing.

Due to the current situation with COVID-19, all personnel are required to adhere to special safety precautions while training. These include wearing a mask – as seen in the clip.

Matthias will continue his training for Cosmic Kiss at partner agencies around the world over the next weeks and months. Stay tuned for further footage of his training and experiences.

The taste of sunny days: what makes cider the drink of British summer?
Mon, 29 Mar 2021 15:18:25 GMT

For food writer Suzy Pope, summer brings with it walks to the beach and picnics in the park – but whatever the occasion, a sip of cider makes it all the sweeter

As the weather turns balmy and folk meander to open spaces for some much-needed vitamin D, my mind leaves the warming hum of a smoky whisky behind and craves something cold and dripping with condensation. Every summer, I start drinking cider – and I’m not alone. What is it about the zingy, apple-based drink that sends the saliva glands into overdrive as soon as the sun comes out?

Before I was a food and drink writer, I was a student. I didn’t think about the terroir of grape-growing, the nose of whisky or what wine to pair with raw tilapia. On sunny days, I just thought about the most enjoyable way to quench my thirst. Now, the clank of a metal bottle opener and the hiss of a cold Thatchers Cider opening is enough to bring me back to the Meadows in Edinburgh, for a post-lecture picnic with friends. Stretched out on the grass as the rays warm my skin, the air is filled with the smoky smell of barbecue.

Vodka, toothpaste, yoga mats … the new technology making items out of thin air
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 08:15:03 GMT

An exhibition at London’s Science Museum shows how far carbon capture research has come

Tackling climate change may bring unexpected benefits, London’s Science Museum will reveal next month. A special exhibition on carbon capture, the fledgling technology of extracting greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and emissions from factories, will display bottles of vodka, tubes of toothpaste, pens and yoga mats made from carbon drawn out of thin air.

In addition, the exhibition – Our Future Planet – will showcase prototypes of the gas-harvesting machines that can provide this carbon. They include the Lackner artificial tree which mirrors the actions of living plants by breathing in carbon dioxide and exhaling oxygen. This Heath Robinson-like device – made up of dangling panels of carbon-absorbing material – was built by Klaus Lackner at Arizona State University and will be the first to be displayed in Britain.

Groundswell review – the fight against fracking in Ireland
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 08:52:18 GMT

Johnny Gogan’s documentary highlights the misconceived plans of corporations that hoped to avoid protesters

In 2010, the American film-maker Josh Fox released something that in retrospect looks like one of the most influential and original documentaries of recent times: GasLand. It was about something new to many at the time: fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, under the earth to release natural gas from shale rock, at the risk of polluting the water table and turning areas of natural beauty into sludge dumps – and that is aside from the existing larger implications of gas consumption.

The film alerted many to a new environmental menace, and it plays its historic role in this new film from Johnny Gogan about the anti-fracking campaign in Ireland, often by people who were energised by seeing GasLand and determined to resist what one campaigner calls the new way of “scraping the bottom of the fossil-fuel barrel”. Exactly so. The coronavirus pandemic has, understandably, diverted many people’s attention from the climate crisis. But there is no vaccination for climate change.

David Remnick: ‘There is no vaccine for climate change’
Sun, 18 Apr 2021 08:30:03 GMT

The New Yorker editor on Fragile Earth, a new collection of the magazine’s climate crisis writing, the continuing dangers of Trumpism – and seeing his family for the first time in a year

David Remnick has been the editor of the New Yorker since 1998. The Fragile Earth, a selection of the writing that has appeared in the magazine about climate change, is out now.

You say that as a young reporter you wrote quite a lot about dramatic weather events. Can you remember when those localised storms and fires and floods started to suggest something more apocalyptic?
When I was at the Washington Post, Len Downie, Ben Bradlee’s successor as editor, was obsessed with “weather stories” and played them big. And there was much high-minded, wise-guy joking about this, as if it were the height of ordinariness. But when I think back on it, Downie was right. Weather is what envelops and affects us all. And our decades-long heedlessness to climate change has done great damage to the world. So when we think about all of these unusual storms and fires, these are no longer “weather stories” – banalities, part of the nature of things – they aren’t merely that. They’re exacerbated by human behaviour over time and they are harbingers of worse.

Governments to hold three-week virtual meeting next month before climate summit in November
