To Ban TikTok, Supreme Court Would Rank “National Security” Before First Amendment
Wed, 08 Jan 2025 17:30:00 +0000

Critics worry that a sweeping ban based on predictions rather than more concrete proof of TikTok’s security risks sets a precedent in line with repressive regimes.

Kenya court rules that criminalising attempted suicide is unconstitutional
Fri, 10 Jan 2025 11:32:46 GMT

The judgment has been welcomed as an important shift in perceptions by human rights and mental health groups

A Kenyan judge has declared as unconstitutional sections of the country’s laws that criminalise attempted suicide. In a landmark ruling on Thursday, Judge Lawrence Mugambi of the country’s high court stated that section 226 of the penal code contradicts the constitution by punishing those with mental health issues over which they may have little or no control.

While the constitution says in article 43 that a person has the right to the “highest attainable standard of health”, criminal law states that “any person who attempts to kill himself is guilty of a misdemeanour and is subject to imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both”, with the minimum age of prosecution for the offence set at eight years old.

As many as one in six workers in Britain are skipping meals to make ends meet as households remain under pressure from the higher cost of groceries, energy and other essentials.

Highlighting the impact of the cost of living crisis on working households, figures from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) showed 17% of full- or part-time workers had skipped a meal to reduce their spending in the past three months.

Zirkzee the hero as 10-man Manchester United stun Arsenal in FA Cup shootout
Sun, 12 Jan 2025 18:24:06 GMT

Joshua Zirkzee had heard his name chanted to the Emirates Stadium rafters by the travelling Manchester United fans when he was introduced as a substitute in the 81st minute. There has been a concerted attempt by them to build a few bridges after what happened in the Newcastle defeat at the end of December: Zirkzee applauded off after his 33rd minute withdrawal, a shattering low.

When the full-time whistle went here, this FA Cup third round tie locked at 1-1, Zirkzee turned towards the United support and geed them up. It felt as though the connection had been restored. The same supporters had got behind him when he came on in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool. And it just had to be Zirkzee who stepped forward at the end of the shootout with the kick to win it.

Deep joy: Wales embraces ‘hwyl’ in tourism campaign to rival Danish ‘hygge’
Sun, 12 Jan 2025 15:00:36 GMT

‘Hwyl can raise the heartbeat or relax the body; it’s your own particular form of happiness,’ says Welsh psychologist

The Danish word hygge, which summons a feeling of cosy, fire-crackling contentedness, has done its fair share for tourism in Scandinavia as well as sparking a string of self-help guides.

Now Visit Wales is aiming to draw tourists to its hills, valleys, coastlines and cities by harnessing the lovely Welsh word hwyl, which it defines as a “deep state of joy that comes from being totally immersed in the moment”, in its 2025 publicity drive.

Dream journey: a nostalgic trip aboard the sleeper train from Amsterdam to Berlin
Sun, 12 Jan 2025 11:00:32 GMT

Taking the overnight train between the capital cities and on to Dresden is all about slow travel and the romance of life on the track

On the evening of our overnight train journey from Amsterdam to Berlin and on to Dresden aboard the European Sleeper, we enjoy a restorative plate of oysters and steak tartare on the decks of Amsterdam’s BrasserieMarie overlooking the Amstel. Then, after a nightcap in the adjoining Freddy’s Bar, a legendary spot in the Hotel De L’Europe, we make the short stroll to Amsterdam Centraal Station for the so-called Good Night Train.

At 22.20 we board the train to Berlin, the bunks are swiftly made up and the blinds part pulled down for sleep. You can open the window for fresh air, brush your teeth in your own basin and there is crisp, clean linen. This slow journey is all about the romance of life on the track – and, for me, a lingering nostalgia.

Couldn’t put it down: David Hurn’s photographs of people reading – in pictures
Sat, 11 Jan 2025 17:00:09 GMT

In 1983 David Hurn met one of his photographic heroes, André Kertész , and jokingly suggested that, when he reached Kertész’s age of 89, he would remake his seminal volume, On Reading. True to his word, the Magnum photographer has now done so. Wherever Hurn travelled as a photojournalist, he took images of people reading books, magazines and, lately, on mobile phones. “One of the things that happens in every country in the world is people read,” he says. “It’s lovely to read – the touch of the paper, the ease of being able to check back a few pages. But we’re at a time now where we’re not quite sure whether, in the future, books on paper are going to disappear.”
