Agriculture minister says rising prices have ‘had a significant impact on people’s lives’ amid record heat, surges in demand and distribution problems
Japan is to flood the market with almost a quarter of a million tonnes of stockpiled rice in an unprecedented attempt to arrest soaring prices caused by record summer heat, panic buying and distribution problems.
The government will release up to 210,000 tonnes of rice, the agriculture minister, Taku Eto, said on Friday, as consumers battled a surge in prices of more than 50% in recent months.

The Munich security conference concludes today after a dramatic two days during which the US vice-president, JD Vance, excoriated European leaders, accusing them of suppressing free speech, and Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, declared it was time to create a European army.
With Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine looming over the conference, the two men met at its sidelines, with Zelenskyy demanding “security guarantees” and a joint US-Ukrainian peace plan before he enters into any talks with Moscow.
Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said Europe will be consulted – but ultimately excluded – from the talks between Russia, Ukraine and the US. “To my European friends, I would say: ‘Get into the debate, not by complaining that you might, yes or no, be at the table, but by coming up with concrete proposals, ideas, ramp up [defence] spending’,” Kellogg said at the Munich conference on Saturday.
Finland’s president, Alexander Stubb, said “Europe needs to talk less and do more”, in response to the prospect of being shut out of talks. “There’s no way in which we can have discussions or negotiations about Ukraine, Ukraine’s future or European security structure, without Europeans,” Stubb told reporters in Munich. “But this means that Europe needs to get its act together.”
The Nato chief, Mark Rutte, said Europe had to come up with “good proposals” for securing peace in Ukraine if it wanted to be involved in US-led talks. “If Europeans want to have a say, make yourself relevant,” Rutte told journalists.
Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, and Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, have discussed Kyiv’s vision of a path to peace with China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi. Sybiha said on X the meeting that took place on the sidelines of the Munich conference was to “reaffirm mutual respect for territorial integrity”. On Friday, Wang told the conference that China believes all stakeholders in the war in Ukraine should participate in the peace talks, underscoring Europe’s role in them.

Sunday lie in? If I can get to 9.30, that’s a win. I’ve never been a morning person, but sadly a lie-in doesn’t mean midday any more.
Breakfast? There tends to be a brunchy sort of thing that happens. Omelettes, maybe muesli and yoghurt, cups of tea. I’m certainly not the cook in our house. My wife Meera [Syal] is brilliant. In an effective division of labour, I’m good at the washing-up, and I mean superb, an excellent dishwasher.
Any workouts? I probably should exercise more, but I steadfastly refuse. There might be an occasional walk that will be suggested by someone else. I’ll go along for sociable reasons but, if it’s left up to me, I won’t be shifting.
Sunday lunch? If there’s a roast, I’ll be involved in the prep. My stepdaughter, Chameli, lives nearby, so she’ll come over and our son, Shaan, joins before he disappears from view to work on his songwriting – it’s his passion.
In the afternoon? If Liverpool are playing, Shaan and I will be in front of the TV. They’re doing well, but there’s always anxiety.
What’s on TV? Trying to watch films as a family is a process. It starts with me presenting about eight films, there’s a debate about them, they all get rejected, then I find another eight, they get rejected, and then two hours have passed.
In the evening? There’s a fridge full of leftovers, so I’ll have some weird combination, like Indian food on toast. And read scripts.
Sunday wind-down? I’m reading Exterminate, Regenerate: The Story of Doctor Who by John Higgs. I’m also a big Elvis fan, so I’ve got From Here to the Great Unknown by Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keough on the go. It takes me a long time to get to sleep. When the lights turn off, my brain switches on.

Sayan Bose had travelled two hours from his home in Kolkata, India, for a day of documentary photography in Sangrampur, West Bengal. “I was roaming around the village, capturing the local people’s lifestyle, asking about their daily lives and jobs and struggles,” Bose says. “I got talking to a 17-year-old called Ariful Alam. He was a farmer at a large sunflower garden. He was youthful and fun-loving, and agreed to pose in the field for me.”
Alam wears a Chou, or Chhau, mask. “They hold a significant place in Bengal’s rich cultural heritage,” Bose says. “They’re used in a traditional folk dance, the Purulia Chhau, which narrates mythologies and folklores, and also as decorative pieces. I chose to use the mask that depicts a character named Mahisha, from Mahishasura Mardini, a 21-verse stotra from Hindu mythology.”

Imagine a world in which you can do transactions and many other things without having to give your personal information. A world in which you don’t need to rely on banks or governments anymore. Sounds amazing, right? That’s exactly what blockchain technology allows us to do.
It’s like your computer’s hard drive. blockchain is a technology that lets you store data in digital blocks, which are connected together like links in a chain.
Blockchain technology was originally invented in 1991 by two mathematicians, Stuart Haber and W. Scot Stornetta. They first proposed the system to ensure that timestamps could not be tampered with.
A few years later, in 1998, software developer Nick Szabo proposed using a similar kind of technology to secure a digital payments system he called “Bit Gold.” However, this innovation was not adopted until Satoshi Nakamoto claimed to have invented the first Blockchain and Bitcoin.
A blockchain is a distributed database shared between the nodes of a computer network. It saves information in digital format. Many people first heard of blockchain technology when they started to look up information about bitcoin.
Blockchain is used in cryptocurrency systems to ensure secure, decentralized records of transactions.
Blockchain allowed people to guarantee the fidelity and security of a record of data without the need for a third party to ensure accuracy.

Blockchain technology allows systems to react much faster in the event of a hazard. It also has many other uses in the modern world.
Blockchain technology is safe, even if it’s public. People can access the technology using an internet connection.
Have you ever been in a situation where you had all your data stored at one place and that one secure place got compromised? Wouldn't it be great if there was a way to prevent your data from leaking out even when the security of your storage systems is compromised?

NFT stands for non-fungible token, which is a cryptographic token on a blockchain with unique identification codes that distinguish it from other tokens. This option is available on OpenSea and this simply denotes that your NFT will only be able to trade using Polygon's blockchain and not Etherum's blockchain. Sunday lie in? If I can get to 9.30, that’s a win. I’ve never been a morning person, but sadly a lie-in doesn’t mean midday any more.

In an effective division of labour, I’m good at the washing-up, and I mean superb, an excellent dishwasher.
Any workouts? I probably should exercise more, but I steadfastly refuse. There might be an occasional walk that will be suggested by someone else. I’ll go along for sociable reasons but, if it’s left up to me, I won’t be shifting.
Sunday lunch? If there’s a roast, I’ll be involved in the prep. My stepdaughter, Chameli, lives nearby, so she’ll come over and our son, Shaan, joins before he disappears from view to work on his songwriting – it’s his passion.
In the afternoon? If Liverpool are playing, Shaan and I will be in front of the TV. They’re doing well, but there’s always anxiety.
What’s on TV? Trying to watch films as a family is a process. It starts with me presenting about eight films, there’s a debate about them, they all get rejected, then I find another eight, they get rejected, and then two hours have passed.
In the evening? There’s a fridge full of leftovers, so I’ll have some weird combination, like Indian food on toast. And read scripts.
Sunday wind-down? I’m reading Exterminate, Regenerate: The Story of Doctor Who by John Higgs. I’m also a big Elvis fan, so I’ve got From Here to the Great Unknown by Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keough on the go. It takes me a long time to get to sleep. When the lights turn off, my brain switches on.

If you asked wine-drinkers in Britain to pick a red and a white grape variety to represent each of Australia and New Zealand, I reckon most would plump for chardonnay and shiraz for the Aussies, and sauvignon blanc and pinot noir for the Kiwis. But there are plenty of winemakers on either side of the Tasman Sea who make fantastic wines from the neighbouring country’s specialities – a fact that was confirmed at a tasting in London recently in which 10 examples of each of those big four varieties, five from New Zealand and five Australian, were lined up for comparison. Standout wines for me were evenly spread across the two countries, and included the pure, fluent Seifried Estate Aotea Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (£17.75, farehamwinecellar.co.uk) and the luminous peach and crème-fraiche savoury complexity of Neudorf chardonnay from New Zealand; and, from Australia, the mouthwateringly taut, clean lines of Ministry of Clouds Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2023 (£39.95, vincognito.co.uk) and the tranquil soft red fruit of Mac Forbes Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023 (£28.95, fieldandfawcett.co.uk).

Don’t Tell Dad in London’s Queen’s Park is a self-declared neighbourhood restaurant in a knowingly dishevelled neighbourhood. It sits on a part-cobbled, mews-style lane which was once home to stable blocks and very much looks like it. If you want to snoop at the red-rust frontage on Google Street View, however, you can’t. It’s a private street, through which Google’s cars may never pass. Lonsdale Road, once the property of the Church Commissioners, is now owned by a single landlord, Feldberg Capital, which is gently turning it into an ever-so-random-on-purpose leisure destination. Josh Katz’s Middle Eastern-influenced grill restaurant Carmel is here, as is the Australian-inspired Milk Beach and an outpost of Pizza Pilgrims, alongside a micro-brewery, a yoga studio, co-working spaces and a macrobiotic deli where they crochet their own fermented sea-vegetables. It’s like your computer’s hard drive. blockchain is a technology that lets you store data in digital blocks, which are connected together like links in a chain.
Blockchain technology was originally invented in 1991 by two mathematicians, Stuart Haber and W. Scot Stornetta. They first proposed the system to ensure that timestamps could not be tampered with.
A few years later, in 1998, software developer Nick Szabo proposed using a similar kind of technology to secure a digital payments system he called “Bit Gold.” However, this innovation was not adopted until Satoshi Nakamoto claimed to have invented the first Blockchain and Bitcoin.
A blockchain is a distributed database shared between the nodes of a computer network. It saves information in digital format. Many people first heard of blockchain technology when they started to look up information about bitcoin.
Blockchain is used in cryptocurrency systems to ensure secure, decentralized records of transactions.
Blockchain allowed people to guarantee the fidelity and security of a record of data without the need for a third party to ensure accuracy.

Each block contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block, timestamp and transaction information. Modification of data is not allowed due to the design of the blockchain. The technology allows decentralized control and eliminates risks of data modification by other parties.
Blockchain has a wide spectrum of applications and, over the next 5-10 years, we will likely see it being integrated into all sorts of industries. From finance to healthcare, blockchain could revolutionize the way we store and share data. Although there is some hesitation to adopt blockchain systems right now, that won't be the case in 2022-2023 (and even less so in 2026). Once people become more comfortable with the technology and understand how it can work for them, owners, CEOs and entrepreneurs alike will be quick to leverage blockchain technology for their own gain.
