China reels from spate of suspected ‘revenge against society’ attacks
Fri, 22 Nov 2024 13:03:01 GMT
Stabbings and car rammings raise fears that China’s strained social safety net is leading to growing violence
China is grappling with a spate of violent rampages that have left dozens of people dead, sparking a conversation about whether “revenge against society” attacks are becoming more common.
On 19 November, a 39-year-old man drove a car into a group of people near a school in Changde, a city in central China, injuring several students. Days earlier, another car-ramming attack in the southern city of Zhuhai had killed 35 people outside a sports centre, China’s deadliest mass killing in a decade. That same week, a former student in another city stabbed to death eight people and injured 17 others at a vocational college.

‘The rising smoke and setting sun made a magical backdrop’: Jurica Galić’s best phone shot
Sat, 23 Nov 2024 10:00:39 GMT
On assignment in South Sudan, the Croatian photographer used a natural framing device for this award-winning image
Before he arrived for his three-day stay, Jurica Galić knew that the South Sudanese Mundari people set fire to dried cow dung before sunset to repel mosquitoes. What the Croatian photographer and travel journalist didn’t know was the depth of harmony between the tribe and their cattle, nor how he would capture it.
“Ankole are breeds of domestic cattle originating from east and central Africa, characterised by their huge horns,” Galić says. “My goal was to capture the relationship between man and nature, and while staying in the camp I came up with the idea of taking some photos through the horns of one of the animals. They became the frame, leading the viewer to the scene. Meanwhile, the smoke rising, in combination with the setting sun and the remaining rays, created the most magical backdrop.”

Jofra Archer is caught between an Ashes rock and a Mega Auction hard place | Barney Ronay
Sat, 23 Nov 2024 08:00:38 GMT
England want their best fast bowler primed for Australia but the IPL’s financial power might hurt those preparations
Jofra Archer has sensationally re-entered the Mega Auction and people on the internet are annoyed. You’ve got to hand it to the Indian Premier League. It is relentlessly inventive in its language, even if the direction of travel is always towards exhaustion by superlatives. So a six becomes a HyperWang Mobile Attack Maximum, a good catch the Standard Cement Super Happy Sex-grab Of the Day. By the same process, what could possibly be better than an auction? A big auction? A very big auction? No. Only a Mega Auction will do.
To be fair this really is a Mega Auction. Scheduled to take place from Sunday into Monday, the IPLMA will see 1,054 players whittled down to just over 100 available slots, offered up on this occasion in disruptive, schedule-defining three-year contracts. For the players at the centre this is basically your life, your pension, your future. Kneel before Zod, muscular Kiwi impact all-rounder. We own you now.

A spa is reborn in Transylvania: a ‘healing hotel’ amid Romania’s forests and mountains
Sat, 23 Nov 2024 07:00:35 GMT
A castle in the Carpathian mountains with a turbulent history has been restored by the original family owners
The Zabola estate’s wrought-iron gates swing open and an avenue of chestnut trees stretches before me. Beyond them lies a serene Transylvanian landscape of rolling hills, lakes and gardens surrounding a grand yellow-ochre castle (which has the comfiest beds I’ve ever slept in). I instantly feel myself relax – this place, hidden in a forested valley in Romania’s Carpathian mountains, is a dreamy oasis for a winter weekend, and somewhere I have been before for proper R&R.
In past centuries, people from all over the Austro-Hungarian empire, of which the region of Covasna, surrounding Zabola village and castle were once part, came here to heal. The area, above a dormant volcano (last eruption: 20,000 years ago), has bubbly mineral springs below the surface but was never as famous as the spas of Bad Gastein in Austria or Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, and hence is still affordable. Rooms at Zabola range from €80 to €300 a night, with treatments from €30, while the bus from Braşov city to Covasna takes an hour and costs less than €20.

‘Protect the climate for whom?’: Palestinians highlight Gaza at Cop29

As countries negotiate over climate finance, Palestinian officials and advocates have come to Cop29 in Baku to highlight global heating’s intersection with another crisis: Israel’s siege on Gaza.
“The Cop [meetings] are very keen to protect the environment, but for whom?” said Ahmed Abu Thaher, director of projects and international relations at Palestine’s Environment Quality Authority, who had travelled to Cop29 from Ramallah. “If you are killing the people there, for whom are you keen to protect the environment and to minimise the effects of climate change?”

Russia has sent air defence missiles and other military technology to North Korea in return for the deployment of troops from the North to support the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine, intelligence officials in South Korea have said.
The shipments were the latest expression of a deepening alliance that allies and enemies fear could fuel the escalation of the war in Ukraine, geopolitical tensions in Asia, and potentially even global nuclear arms proliferation.

Haruki Murakami: ‘My books have been criticised so much over the years, I don’t pay much attention’
Sat, 23 Nov 2024 09:00:38 GMT
As his new novel is published, the acclaimed author discusses complexity, writing female characters and meeting his fans
• Read about the rise of Japanese fiction in Britain
The City and Its Uncertain Walls is based on a novella you wrote in 1980. Why was it important to give it a new audience now?
That work is the only one I’ve ever written that I never allowed to be reprinted in book form. To put it another way, I just wasn’t satisfied with the story. I thought its theme was very important but unfortunately I lacked the writing skills at the time to convey it in the way I’d hoped to. I decided to bide my time, until I’d acquired the necessary skill set as a writer, and only then do a complete rewrite of the story.
In the interim, though, I had lots of other work I wanted to undertake and just couldn’t get started on this project. The next thing I knew, 40 years had passed (in a flash, it seemed), and I reached my 70s. I thought I’d better get going if I wanted to really do this, since I might not have all that much time left. I also felt a strong need to fulfil my responsibilities as a novelist.

The challenge for England is clear: they have to shut Japan out | Ugo Monye
Sat, 23 Nov 2024 08:00:39 GMT
After conceding 12 tries in three games, the defence will be under scrutiny and they need to stop the opposition scoring
The message within the England camp should be loud and clear this weekend: we are not conceding any tries against Japan. As much as Eddie Jones will be revelling in coming back to Twickenham, in trying to exploit whatever insecurities England have on the back of five straight defeats, this is not a Japan side that will harbour genuine hopes of an upset. The target for England, then, after an autumn of defensive frailties, should be to tighten up. To make sure that even if the result is not in doubt, they defend their line with all they’ve got.
It can be difficult when the drop-off is so pronounced having faced the back-to-back world champions in South Africa. Japan are historically a side who like to move the ball and I don’t expect that to change but England faced the same team in Tokyo over the summer in their first match of that tour and put 50 points on them despite stifling humidity. More than targeting a similar number of points, or a number of tries, I would challenge England to keep Japan tryless.

Huge election year worldwide sees weakening commitment to act on climate crisis
Sat, 23 Nov 2024 11:00:40 GMT
Among sweeping rightwing electoral victories across the globe, the ‘big loser of the elections has been climate’
An unprecedented year of elections around the world has underscored a sobering trend – in many countries the commitment to act on the climate crisis has either stalled or is eroding, even as disasters and record temperatures continue to mount.
So far 2024, called the “biggest election year in human history” by the United Nations with around half the world’s population heading to the polls, there have been major wins for Donald Trump, the US president-elect who calls the climate crisis “a big hoax”; the climate-skeptic right in European Union elections; and Vladimir Putin, who won another term and has endured sanctions to maintain Russia’s robust oil and gas exports.

India reap the rewards of patience after Australia hit the brakes | Geoff Lemon
Sat, 23 Nov 2024 10:59:36 GMT
Visitors ease away to a commanding lead as Australia fade to the point of missing small moments on day two of the first Test in Perth
Imagine you’re doing the Keanu Reeves bit in Speed. You’re on a bus that can’t drop below 50 miles an hour or it will explode. It’s high-octane stuff, even if the bus is running on diesel. You have to avoid collisions, do sick jumps, kindle a romance with Sandra Bullock. But then imagine there’s a change in script. Dennis Hopper rings up with a different idea. Now, the bus has a maximum speed. And that speed is 10 miles an hour. Chill.
It was this sort of change that came over the first Test between Australia and India on its second day. On the first day, Australia had taken all 10 India wickets for 150, then lost seven of their own by stumps for 67. But after the early exchanges on the second morning, the match morphed from fast-forward chaos to careful, considered, and conventional. The slowdown though was only good for one team. We are stretching the metaphor beyond breaking point, but even if this bus was only going at 10 miles an hour, it was driving inexorably away from Australia.
