‘Everyone thought it would cause gridlock’: the highway that Seoul turned into a stream
Fri, 17 Jan 2025 06:00:22 GMT
Cheonggyecheon stream in the South Korean capital has become an attraction – and helps with flood management, fighting air pollution and cooling the city
On a crisp December morning, office workers and tourists stroll along a tree-lined stream in central Seoul, pausing on stepping stones that cross its flowing waters. It’s difficult to imagine that just over 20 years ago, this was a vast elevated highway carrying 168,000 cars daily through the heart of South Korea’s capital.
Cheonggyecheon, a stream that runs for about 3.5 miles (nearly 6km) through Seoul, was one of the earliest experiments in an increasing trend in cities globally: turning spaces where there was once car or rail infrastructure into spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. It’s a powerful example of the way that these spaces can become loved and popular, along with projects such as the High Line in New York, where an old railway track has been turned into a raised park, or the city moat in Utrecht, where a multi-lane road (nicknamed the “motorway from nothing to nowhere”) was converted back into a canal, in part of a huge continuing push to allow pedestrians and cyclists to dominate the city’s centre.

With his toxic revamp, Emperor Zuckerberg is preparing to be Trump’s puppet | John Naughton
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 16:00:33 GMT
The Meta boss has embraced masculinity and abandoned fact-checking and decorum. Is this the future of the tech industry?
Years ago the Economist magazine had a striking cover in which Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was portrayed as a languid clone of the Roman emperor Augustus. This was inspired by stories that Zuck was fascinated by Gus. On honeymoon in Rome in 2012, for example, he took so many photos of the emperor’s sculptures that his wife joked it was as if there were three people on the holiday. The couple even named their second daughter August.
Explaining his fascination for Rome’s first emperor, Zuckerberg told the New Yorker that “basically, through a really harsh approach, he established 200 years of world peace… What are the trade-offs in that? On the one hand, world peace is a long-term goal that people talk about today [but] that didn’t come for free, and he had to do certain things.”

We’re a team of science & tech journalists covering AI, climate change, and biotech. We just published our annual list of 10 Breakthrough Technologies, a round-up of promising tech that we believe could have a real impact on the world. Ask us anything about emerging tech in 2025 and beyond!
2025-01-08T14:57:04+00:00
Hi Reddit! We’re a team of tech journalists from MIT Technology Review, excited to answer all of your questions about emerging tech in 2025 and beyond.
We are:
We just published our annual list of 10 Breakthrough Technologies. Every year, our reporters and editors look for promising technologies poised to have a real impact on the world. We consider dozens of advances across the fields of AI, biotech, computing, and climate. We can’t see the future, but we expect these ten breakthroughs to affect our world in a big way, for decades to come.
Here are the ten items on this year’s list:
- The Vera C. Rubin Observatory: A powerful new telescope will help astronomers study dark matter, explore the Milky Way, and untangle other cosmic unknowns.
- Generative AI search: Generative search promises to make finding what you’re looking for simple and quick. It may signal the end of traditional search engines and the rise of personal AI assistants.
- Small language models: Cheaper and less power-hungry AI models can now stand with the heavyweights across a range of specific tasks.
- Cattle burping remedies: A food supplement that significantly reduces the amount of methane that cattle belch is now available in dozens of countries.
- Robotaxis: Driverless cars have completed years of beta testing, and they are now finally becoming available to the public.
- Cleaner jet fuel: New fuels made from used cooking oil, industrial waste, or even gasses in the air could help power planes without fossil fuels.
- Fast-learning robots: We’re getting closer to general-purpose robots that could be dropped into new environments and tackle a variety of tasks on our behalf, almost instantly.
- Long-acting HIV prevention meds: A new drug could help us end AIDS once and for all—if we can ensure access for those who need it.
- Green steel: Making steel is one of the largest industrial sources of carbon dioxide. The first industrial green-steel plant, which uses hydrogen made with renewable power is scheduled to begin operations next year in northern Sweden.

Ahrefs vs SEMrush: Which SEO Tool Should You Use?
Tue, 01 Mar 2022 12:16:00 +0000
SEMrush and Ahrefs are among
the most popular tools in the SEO industry. Both companies have been in
business for years and have thousands of customers per month.
If you're a professional SEO or trying to do digital
marketing on your own, at some point you'll likely consider using a tool to
help with your efforts. Ahrefs and SEMrush are two names that will likely
appear on your shortlist.
In this guide, I'm going to help you learn more about
these SEO tools and how to choose the one that's best for your purposes.
What is SEMrush?
SEMrush is a popular SEO tool with a wide range of
features—it's the leading competitor research service for online marketers.
SEMrush's SEO Keyword Magic tool offers over 20 billion Google-approved
keywords, which are constantly updated and it's the largest keyword database.
The program was developed in 2007 as SeoQuake is a
small Firefox extension

integration with GA, GMB, and GSC.
- Toxic link monitoring and penalty recovery: With
SEMrush, you can make a detailed analysis of toxic backlinks, toxic scores,
toxic markers, and outreach to those sites.
- Content Optimization and Creation Tools: SEMrush
offers content optimization and creation tools that let you create SEO-friendly
content. Some features include the SEO Writing Assistant, On-Page SEO Check,
er/SEO Content Template, Content Audit, Post Tracking, Brand Monitoring.
Ahrefs
Ahrefs is a leading SEO platform that offers a set of
tools to grow your search traffic, research your competitors, and monitor your
niche. The company was founded in 2010, and it has become a popular choice
among SEO tools. Ahrefs has a keyword index of over 10.3 billion keywords and
offers accurate and extensive backlink data updated every 15-30 minutes and it
is the world's most extensive backlink index database.
Features
- Backlink alerts data and new keywords: Get an
alert when your site is linked to or discussed in blogs, forums, comments, or
when new keywords are added to a blog posting about you.
- Intuitive interface: The intuitive design of the
widget helps you see the overall health of your website and search engine
ranking at a glance.
- Site Explorer: The Site Explorer will give you
an in-depth look at your site's search traffic.
- Domain Comparison
- Reports with charts and graphs
- JavaScript rendering and a site audit can identify SEO
issues.
- A question explorer that provides well-crafted topic
suggestions
Direct Comparisons: Ahrefs vs SEMrush
Now that you know a little more about each tool, let's
take a look at how they compare. I'll analyze each tool to see how they differ
in interfaces, keyword research resources, rank tracking, and competitor
analysis.
User Interface
Ahrefs and SEMrush both offer comprehensive information
and quick metrics regarding your website's SEO performance. However, Ahrefs
takes a bit more of a hands-on approach to getting your account fully set up,
whereas SEMrush's simpler dashboard can give you access to the data you need
quickly.
In this section, we provide a brief overview of the elements
found on each dashboard and highlight the ease with which you can complete
tasks.
AHREFS
The Ahrefs dashboard is less cluttered than that of
SEMrush, and its primary menu is at the very top of the page, with a search bar
designed only for entering URLs.
Additional features of the Ahrefs platform include:
- You can see analytics from the dashboard, including
search engine rankings to domain ratings, referring domains, and backlink
- Jumping from one tool to another is easy. You can use
the Keyword Explorer to find a keyword to target and then directly track your
ranking with one click.
- The website offers a tooltip helper tool that allows
you to hover your mouse over something that isn't clear and get an in-depth
explanation.
SEMRUSH
When you log into the SEMrush Tool, you will find four
main modules. These include information about your domains, organic keyword
analysis, ad keyword, and site traffic.
You'll also find some other options like
- A search bar allows you to enter a domain, keyword, or
anything else you wish to explore.
- A menu on the left side of the page provides quick
links to relevant information, including marketing insights, projects, keyword
analytics, and more.
- The customer support resources located directly within
the dashboard can be used to communicate with the support team or to learn
about other resources such as webinars and blogs.
- Detailed descriptions of every resource offered. This
detail is beneficial for new marketers, who are just starting.
WHO WINS?
Both Ahrefs and SEMrush have user-friendly dashboards,
but Ahrefs is less cluttered and easier to navigate. On the other hand, SEMrush
offers dozens of extra tools, including access to customer support resources.
When deciding on which dashboard to use, consider what
you value in the user interface, and test out both.
Rank Tracking
If you're looking to track your website's search engine
ranking, rank tracking features can help. You can also use them to monitor your
competitors.
Let's take a look at Ahrefs vs. SEMrush to see which
tool does a better job.
Ahrefs
The Ahrefs Rank Tracker is simpler to use. Just type in
the domain name and keywords you want to analyze, and it spits out a report
showing you the search engine results page (SERP) ranking for each keyword you
enter.
Rank Tracker looks at the ranking performance of
keywords and compares them with the top rankings for those keywords. Ahrefs
also offers:
You'll see metrics that help you understand your
visibility, traffic, average position, and keyword difficulty.
It gives you an idea of whether a keyword would be
profitable to target or not.
SEMRUSH
SEMRush offers a tool called Position Tracking. This
tool is a project tool—you must set it up as a new project. Below are a few of
the most popular features of the SEMrush Position Tracking tool:
All subscribers are given regular data updates and
mobile search rankings upon subscribing
The platform provides opportunities to track several
SERP features, including Local tracking.
Intuitive reports allow you to track statistics for the
pages on your website, as well as the keywords used in those pages.
Identify pages that may be competing with each other
using the Cannibalization report.
WHO WINS?
Ahrefs is a more user-friendly option. It takes seconds
to enter a domain name and keywords. From there, you can quickly decide whether
to proceed with that keyword or figure out how to rank better for other
keywords.
SEMrush allows you to check your mobile rankings and
ranking updates daily, which is something Ahrefs does not offer. SEMrush also
offers social media rankings, a tool you won't find within the Ahrefs platform.
Both are good which one do you like let me know in the comment.
Keyword Research
Keyword research is closely related to rank tracking,
but it's used for deciding which keywords you plan on using for future content
rather than those you use now.
When it comes to SEO, keyword research is the most
important thing to consider when comparing the two platforms.
AHREFS
The Ahrefs Keyword Explorer provides you with thousands
of keyword ideas and filters search results based on the chosen search engine.
Ahrefs supports several features, including:
- It can search multiple keywords in a single search and
analyze them together. At SEMrush, you also have this feature in Keyword
Overview.
- Ahrefs has a variety of keywords for different search
engines, including Google, YouTube, Amazon, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, and other
search engines.
- When you click on a keyword, you can see its search
volume and keyword difficulty, but also other keywords related to it, which you
didn't use.
SEMRUSH
SEMrush's Keyword Magic Tool has over 20 billion
keywords for Google. You can type in any keyword you want, and a list of
suggested keywords will appear.
The Keyword Magic Tool also lets you to:
- Show performance metrics by keyword
- Search results are based on both broad and exact
keyword matches.
- Show data like search volume, trends, keyword
difficulty, and CPC.
- Show the first 100 Google search results for any
keyword.
- Identify SERP Features and Questions related to each
keyword
- SEMrush has released a new Keyword Gap Tool that
uncovers potentially useful keyword opportunities for you, including both paid
and organic keywords.
WHO WINS?
Both of these tools offer keyword research features and
allow users to break down complicated tasks into something that can be
understood by beginners and advanced users alike.
If you're interested in keyword suggestions, SEMrush
appears to have more keyword suggestions than Ahrefs does. It also continues to
add new features, like the Keyword Gap tool and SERP Questions recommendations.
Competitor Analysis
Both platforms offer competitor analysis tools,
eliminating the need to come up with keywords off the top of your head. Each
tool is useful for finding keywords that will be useful for your competition so
you know they will be valuable to you.
AHREFS
Ahrefs' domain comparison tool lets you compare up to
five websites (your website and four competitors) side-by-side.it also shows
you how your site is ranked against others with metrics
such as backlinks, domain ratings, and more.
Use the Competing Domains section to see a list of your
most direct competitors, and explore how many keywords matches your competitors
have.
To find more information about your competitor, you can
look at the Site Explorer and Content Explorer tools and type in their URL
instead of yours.
SEMRUSH
SEMrush provides a variety of insights into your
competitors' marketing tactics. The platform enables you to research your
competitors effectively. It also offers several resources for competitor
analysis including:
Traffic Analytics helps you identify where your
audience comes from, how they engage with your site, what devices visitors use
to view your site, and how your audiences overlap with other websites.
SEMrush's Organic Research examines your website's
major competitors and shows their organic search rankings, keywords they are
ranking for, and even if they are ranking for any (SERP) features and more.
The Market Explorer search field allows you to type in
a domain and lists websites or articles similar to what you entered. Market
Explorer also allows users to perform in-depth data analytics on These
companies and markets.
WHO WINS?
SEMrush wins here because it has more tools dedicated to
competitor analysis than Ahrefs. However, Ahrefs offers a lot of functionality
in this area, too. It takes a combination of both tools to gain an advantage
over your competition.
Pricing
Ahrefs
- Lite Monthly: $99/month
- Standard Monthly: $179/month
- Annually Lite: $990/year
- Annually Standard: $1790/year
SEMRUSH
- Pro Plan: $119.95/month
- Guru Plan:$229.95/month
- Business Plan: $449.95/month
Which SEO tool should you choose for digital
marketing?
When it comes to keyword data research, you will become
confused about which one to choose.
Consider choosing Ahrefs if you
- Like friendly and clean interface
- Searching for simple keyword suggestions
- Want to get more keywords for different search engines
like Amazon, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Baidu, and more
Consider SEMrush if you:
- Want more marketing and SEO features
- Need competitor analysis tool
- Need to keep your backlinks profile clean
- Looking for more keyword suggestions for Google
Both tools are great. Choose the one which meets your
requirements and if you have any experience using either Ahrefs or SEMrush let
me know in the comment section which works well for you.

This is my three-point plan for standing up to the far right and the billionaire bullies | Sadiq Khan
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 17:00:33 GMT
Putting pressure on social media companies to tackle hate and misinformation is a start, but there’s more that the centre left can do
Progressives across the western world face a century-defining challenge – and the stakes for liberal democracy couldn’t be higher.
The far right is on the march. From Switzerland and Sweden to Hungary, Austria and Italy, European nations are coming under the influence of extreme nativist parties that are hostile to democratic institutions, immigrant populations and fact-based journalism.
By exploiting economic concerns and a growing distrust of political and media institutions, these reactionary populists have been able to attract new supporters. In Germany, the AfD is on course for a breakthrough in next month’s federal elections. In France, the National Rally is topping presidential polls. And, of course, in the US, Donald Trump is back.
These are deeply worrying times, especially if you’re a member of a minority community. As historians and commentators increasingly find echoes of the 1920s and 30s in the present day, we cannot afford to throw in the towel. We must make a renewed and concerted effort to confront these forces and expose them for what they are: opportunists who seek to divide people for personal and political gain. Not to mention their financial backers who selfishly choose to put the profits of their companies over the interests of our democracies.

‘It’s going to be rough’: what Trump’s response to LA fires portends for future climate disasters
Fri, 17 Jan 2025 11:00:29 GMT
Big oil executive plans to celebrate Trump’s inauguration as California burns – though experts say climatic conditions are only getting more extreme
Donald Trump’s response to the catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles has provided a stark prologue to how his US presidency will probably handle the growing threat of such disasters – through acrimony, brutal dealmaking and dismissal of a climate crisis that is spurring a mounting toll of fires, floods and other calamities.
As of Thursday, four fires, whipped up by wind speeds more typically found in hurricanes, have torched 63 sq miles (163 sq km) of Los Angeles, a burned area roughly three times the size of Manhattan, destroying more than 12,000 homes and businesses and killing at least 25 people. The Palisades and Eaton fires, the largest of the conflagrations that have turned entire neighborhoods to ash, are still to be fully contained.

Who will tame Donald Trump this time? Roll up, roll up, for the White House travelling circus | Simon Tisdall
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 17:30:31 GMT
On the eve of his return, it’s clear that world leaders, whether they like him or loathe him, can’t ignore this unpredictable showman
Michelle Obama’s one-woman boycott of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration on Monday requires no explanation. It’s plain that the former first lady has zero tolerance and even less love for a man who delights in racist and sexist behaviour. Lots of other people, especially among US allies in Europe, would boycott Trump, too, if they could. Yet, inescapably, they must deal with him for the next four years.
Such fear and loathing is by no means universally shared. A poll, published last week by the European Council on Foreign Relations, found that in China, India, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, South Africa and Brazil, more people welcome Trump’s return than deplore it. In contrast, people in the UK, France, Germany and a clutch of other west European countries are frankly appalled at the prospect.

The Observer view: Rachel Reeves has an unenviable task, but she must stick to her plan for growth
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 19:00:35 GMT
While some criticisms of the chancellor are justified, there’s no escaping there are no quick fixes to the bad hand she was dealt
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has endured days of speculation over her future at the Treasury, triggered by the spike in gilt yields of the last fortnight. Far more important than frothy conjecture about the increasingly unlikely possibility that Keir Starmer would ask his chancellor to step aside just six months after Labour’s election victory is the fundamentals of the government’s plan to grow the economy.
Reeves has faced criticism, some justified, about her approach. But, while not offering any quick fixes for the country’s long-term structural problems, the broad parameters of her plan for growth remain sound.

Sex, drugs and a lot more than rock’n’roll: 50 years of Triple J, Australia’s youth radio station
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 14:00:28 GMT
On this day in 1975, 2JJ – which later became Triple J – started broadcasting, exposing Australia to banned songs, swear words and radical politics. Those who were there reflect on the anarchy and the legacy
Fifty years since the launch of 2JJ, or Double Jay – the station that became Triple J in 1981 – radio’s former enfant terrible is now legacy media. Once the cornerstone of Australian popular music and youth culture, it risks irrelevance as listener numbers dwindle in the face of social media and streaming services. Or, as its defenders will argue, maybe the critics are simply nostalgic for when Australia’s youth radio station was aimed at them: there is a saying within the ABC that on the second day that Double Jay was on air, someone rang up and complained that it wasn’t as good as it used to be.
When Double Jay launched at 11am on Sunday 19 January 1975, the brief from Arthur Wyndam, then ABC’s head of radio, was that the station should: give public concerts, expose the public to new music, and record the music made in its studios and at its concerts for broadcasting purposes. At the time, youth radio was serviced by Top 40 AM stations; Double Jay was established along the lines of “underground” radio stations, playing an eclectic selection of music unconstrained by formats.

An American tragedy: how Biden paved the way for Trump’s White House return
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 12:00:25 GMT
To admirers, Biden will remain one of the most consequential one-term presidents in US history – to detractors, he was undone by a fatal flaw
His back straight, his voice steady, Joe Biden stood at the US Capitol just days after a violent insurrection and declared: “Democracy has prevailed.” Fast forward three and a half years and America’s president cut a different, diminished figure. “We finally beat Medicare,” he muttered in confusion in Atlanta, Georgia.
From the soaring hopes of inauguration day to that grim debate night against Donald Trump, the very public decline of the 46th president had the makings of an American tragedy that paved the way for the return of Trump to the White House.

The Traitors shows how herd mentality tramples on our basic instincts | Martha Gill
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 19:30:33 GMT
In the hit TV reality show, as in life, we like to think we are autonomous. In fact, we follow the herd
What explains the stupendous success of The Traitors? More than 9 million people tuned in to the first episode of this, its third season, and last week it overtook Strictly Come Dancing to become the BBC’s most watched reality show. With this sort of trajectory, I’m afraid we must prepare for thousands of imitators to follow in its wake. So what should they be trying to do?
Part of the attraction of the show is its host, Claudia Winkleman, who presides over the setting – a luscious castle in Scotland – in the manner of a campy gothic headmistress: talking softly to owls, ruthlessly ordering contestants into coffins and gunge, and all the while managing to navigate the set through the tiny sliver of daylight between low fringe and high roll-necked jumper.

Women’s March lives on as the People’s March – at a fraction of the size of 2017

Eight years since its gargantuan first protests as a reaction to the incoming president being serially accused of sexual misconduct and misogyny and campaigning on restricting reproductive rights, the Women’s March on Saturday reprised in the nation’s capital before the return of that man to the White House – with, as in 2017, spin-off rallies taking place in various other US cities.
Rebranded and reorganized, the protest was given a new name by organizers, the People’s March, as a means to broaden support, especially during a difficult and introspective time for progressive organizing after Donald Trump’s decisive win in November.

New drama, When Maggie Met Larry, reveals exactly how the world’s most famous actor coached the fledgling Iron Lady

The most famous actor of the 20th century told the then education secretary to put a book on her head and walk around to improve her deportment. He also advised her to take long confident strides, and to use her eyes to seduce and flirt.
The future prime minister went on to visit Olivier’s house for a further five lessons, details of which are revealed in a new Radio 4 play, When Maggie Met Larry. Starring Derek Jacobi, who joined Olivier’s fledgling National Theatre when only 24, and Frances Barber as Thatcher, the drama tells of the previously unknown advice on style and voice offered to the Tory politician.

‘It’s an absolute travesty’: fears for border wildlife as Trump takes office
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 16:00:34 GMT
Environmentalists are braced for new construction on the president’s signature border wall – and the damage that would wreak
During Donald Trump’s first presidential term, he began an ambitious and costly border militarization program, including the construction of over 450 miles of wall that severed wildlife corridors and fragmented ecosystems in some of the country’s most remote and biodiverse regions. With his second inauguration on Monday, environmentalists are bracing for any new phase of construction that could exacerbate the ecological toll of the border wall.
“It’s an absolute travesty and a disaster for border wildlife,” said Margaret Wilder, a human-environment geographer and political ecologist at the University of Arizona, regarding the environmental impact of the existing border wall and the prospect of renewed construction. She said the wall harmed efforts “after many decades of binational cooperation between the US and Mexico to protect this fragile and biodiverse region. I don’t think Americans realize what is at stake.”

I was ambassador to the UK last time Trump was in office - this is what Starmer must do this time | Kim Darroch

The old alliances have been swept away, and foreign policy needs to reflect this new reality
Friday 20 January 2017, Washington DC: overcast skies with the threat of rain for the inauguration of the new president, Donald J Trump. All of Washington was there: former presidents, senior politicians, supreme court justices and, in the seats furthest from the action, the Washington diplomatic corps. But our viewpoint, on the uppermost levels of the temporary amphitheatre erected on the West Front of the Capitol, allowed us to see beyond the stage, all the way down the National Mall; and note that the crowd below looked rather smaller than the 1.8 million estimated to have attended Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration.
Trump would say afterwards that the rain stopped, as if by divine intervention, at the moment he began to deliver his inaugural address. We diplomats in the gallery had exactly the opposite impression – that the heavens opened just as the speech started, with Trump’s opening words drowned out by the rustle of several hundred plastic ponchos being unfolded and donned (with George W Bush memorably failing to locate the appropriate aperture in his, and resorting to draping it over his head like a collapsed umbrella).

The World Health Organization (WHO) could see lean years ahead if the US withdraws membership under the new Trump administration. Such a withdrawal, promised on the first day of Donald Trump’s new administration, would in effect cut the multilateral agency’s funding by one-fifth.
The severe cut would be uncharted territory for the WHO, potentially curtailing public health works globally, pressuring the organization to attract private funding, and providing an opening for other countries to influence the organization. Other countries are not expected to make up the funding loss.

Existing policy is supposed to allow those in need of resettlement the opportunity to join relatives in the UK. In order to apply for family reunion visas, applicants must submit biometrics – usually a fingerprint and a photograph – at appointments at a visa application centre (VAC) in their country of residence.

Labour’s investment in AI isn’t as clever as it thinks it is | Letters
Fri, 17 Jan 2025 16:55:06 GMT
AI is a backward-looking technology that reinforces old biases, warns Natalie Bennett, while fuelling energy-hungry AI data centres will leave the green transition in tatters, writes Christopher Tanner. Plus letters by Philip Ward, Kevin Donovan and Giles du Boulay
There are at least three major concerns to raise with the government’s apparent betting the future of the UK on so-called artificial intelligence (‘Mainlined into UK’s veins’: Labour announces huge public rollout of AI, 12 January).
First, as Prof Shannon Vallor at the University of Edinburgh has pointed out in her book The AI Mirror, generative AI is not creative; it only looks backward. It can only remix and reproduce what we have done before, the same errors, failures and biases that have got us into our current mess.

‘He’s one of the best’: the economist shaping Rachel Reeves’s growth plans
Fri, 17 Jan 2025 13:13:19 GMT
John Van Reenen believes he can help Labour solve the ‘peculiar British problem’ of chronically weak productivity
The economist John Van Reenen lacks the public status of Gordon Brown’s “two Eds” – Balls and Miliband – who ranged across Whitehall in New Labour’s first term, enforcing the Treasury’s will. But ask today’s Labour apparatchiks about Rachel Reeves’s approach to growth, which she will set out in a speech later this month, and they often point to the chair of her council of economic advisers.
Currently on leave from the London School of Economics (LSE), where he ran the Centre for Economic Performance, Van Reenen has spent his professional lifetime probing the weak spots of the UK economy.

On the eve of Trump’s inauguration for his second term as president, his estranged former vice-president said withdrawing or reducing support for Taiwan – as Trump has repeatedly indicated he is considering – would endanger global security and “likely spark a new nuclear arms race” in the Asia-Pacific region.

Jonbon too good for Energumene with convincing Clarence House win
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 16:20:44 GMT
- Nicky Henderson’s Festival squad looking strong
- Jonbon now 5-4 for Champion Chase at Cheltenham
Nicky Henderson brushed off talk of a late run at the trainers’ title after Jonbon’s convincing six-and-a-half length defeat of Energumene in the Clarence House Chase on Saturday. There was the glint in his eye, though, of a fierce, inveterate competitor who can sense a tide may be starting to turn.
Henderson left with two more firm favourites for Grade One races at Cheltenham in March, as Jonbon’s win followed an easy success for Lulamba, Henderson’s main Triumph Hurdle contender, in the opener. If all goes to plan with Constitution Hill, the Champion Hurdle favourite, and Sir Gino, who heads the market for the Arkle Trophy, his Cheltenham squad promises to be the strongest from a British stable for several seasons.

Tue, 12 Dec 2023 16:10:00 +0000
In the rapidly advancing landscape of AI technology and innovation, LimeWire emerges as a unique platform in the realm of generative AI tools. This platform not only stands out from the multitude of existing AI tools but also brings a fresh approach to content generation. LimeWire not only empowers users to create AI content but also provides creators with creative ways to share and monetize their creations.
As we explore LimeWire, our aim is to uncover its features, benefits for creators, and the exciting possibilities it offers for AI content generation. This platform presents an opportunity for users to harness the power of AI in image creation, all while enjoying the advantages of a free and accessible service.
Let's unravel the distinctive features that set LimeWire apart in the dynamic landscape of AI-powered tools, understanding how creators can leverage its capabilities to craft unique and engaging AI-generated images.
Introduction
LimeWire, a name once associated with the notorious file-sharing tool from the 2000s, has undergone a significant transformation. The LimeWire we discuss today is not the file-sharing application of the past but has re-emerged as an entirely new entity—a cutting-edge AI content publishing platform.
This revamped LimeWire invites users to register and unleash their creativity by crafting original AI content, which can then be shared and showcased on the LimeWire Studio. Notably, even acclaimed artists and musicians, such as Deadmau5, Soulja Boy, and Sean Kingston, have embraced this platform to publish their content in the form of NFT music, videos, and images.
Beyond providing a space for content creation and sharing, LimeWire introduces monetization models to empower users to earn revenue from their creations. This includes avenues such as earning ad revenue and participating in the burgeoning market of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). As we delve further, we'll explore these monetization strategies in more detail to provide a comprehensive understanding of LimeWire's innovative approach to content creation and distribution.
LimeWire Studio welcomes content creators into its fold, providing a space to craft personalized AI-focused content for sharing with fans and followers. Within this creative hub, every piece of content generated becomes not just a creation but a unique asset—ownable and tradable. Fans have the opportunity to subscribe to creators' pages, immersing themselves in the creative journey and gaining ownership of digital collectibles that hold tradeable value within the LimeWire community. Notably, creators earn a 2.5% royalty each time their content is traded, adding a rewarding element to the creative process.
The platform's flexibility is evident in its content publication options. Creators can choose to share their work freely with the public or opt for a premium subscription model, granting exclusive access to specialized content for subscribers.
As of the present moment, LimeWire focuses on AI Image Generation, offering a spectrum of creative possibilities to its user base. The platform, however, has ambitious plans on the horizon, aiming to broaden its offerings by introducing AI music and video generation tools in the near future. This strategic expansion promises creators even more avenues for expression and engagement with their audience, positioning LimeWire Studio as a dynamic and evolving platform within the realm of AI-powered content creation.
AI Image Generation Tools
The LimeWire AI image generation tool presents a versatile platform for both the creation and editing of images. Supporting advanced models such as Stable Diffusion 2.1, Stable Diffusion XL, and DALL-E 2, LimeWire offers a sophisticated toolkit for users to delve into the realm of generative AI art.
Much like other tools in the generative AI landscape, LimeWire provides a range of options catering to various levels of complexity in image creation. Users can initiate the creative process with prompts as simple as a few words or opt for more intricate instructions, tailoring the output to their artistic vision.
What sets LimeWire apart is its seamless integration of different AI models and design styles. Users have the flexibility to effortlessly switch between various AI models, exploring diverse design styles such as cinematic, digital art, pixel art, anime, analog film, and more. Each style imparts a distinctive visual identity to the generated AI art, enabling users to explore a broad spectrum of creative possibilities.
The platform also offers additional features, including samplers, allowing users to fine-tune the quality and detail levels of their creations. Customization options and prompt guidance further enhance the user experience, providing a user-friendly interface for both novice and experienced creators.
Excitingly, LimeWire is actively developing its proprietary AI model, signaling ongoing innovation and enhancements to its image generation capabilities. This upcoming addition holds the promise of further expanding the creative horizons for LimeWire users, making it an evolving and dynamic platform within the landscape of AI-driven art and image creation.

Automatically Mint Your Content As NFTs
Upon completing your creative endeavor on LimeWire, the platform allows you the option to publish your content. An intriguing feature follows this step: LimeWire automates the process of minting your creation as a Non-Fungible Token (NFT), utilizing either the Polygon or Algorand blockchain. This transformative step imbues your artwork with a unique digital signature, securing its authenticity and ownership in the decentralized realm.
Creators on LimeWire hold the power to decide the accessibility of their NFT creations. By opting for a public release, the content becomes discoverable by anyone, fostering a space for engagement and interaction. Furthermore, this choice opens the avenue for enthusiasts to trade the NFTs, adding a layer of community involvement to the artistic journey.
Alternatively, LimeWire acknowledges the importance of exclusivity. Creators can choose to share their posts exclusively with their premium subscribers. In doing so, the content remains a special offering solely for dedicated fans, creating an intimate and personalized experience within the LimeWire community. This flexibility in sharing options emphasizes LimeWire's commitment to empowering creators with choices in how they connect with their audience and distribute their digital creations.
After creating your content, you can choose to publish the content. It will automatically mint your creation as an NFT on the Polygon or Algorand blockchain. You can also choose whether to make it public or subscriber-only.
If you make it public, anyone can discover your content and even trade the NFTs. If you choose to share the post only with your premium subscribers, it will be exclusive only to your fans.
Earn Revenue From Your Content
Additionally, you can earn ad revenue from your content creations as well.
When you publish content on LimeWire, you will receive 70% of all ad revenue from other users who view your images, music, and videos on the platform.
This revenue model will be much more beneficial to designers. You can experiment with the AI image and content generation tools and share your creations while earning a small income on the side.
LMWR Tokens
The revenue you earn from your creations will come in the form of LMWR tokens, LimeWire’s own cryptocurrency.
Your earnings will be paid every month in LMWR, which you can then trade on many popular crypto exchange platforms like Kraken, ByBit, and UniSwap.
You can also use your LMWR tokens to pay for prompts when using LimeWire generative AI tools.
Pricing Plans
You can sign up to LimeWire to use its AI tools for free. You will receive 10 credits to use and generate up to 20 AI images per day. You will also receive 50% of the ad revenue share. However, you will get more benefits with premium plans.
For $9.99 per month, you will get 1,000 credits per month, up to 2 ,000 image generations, early access to new AI models, and 50% ad revenue share
For $29 per month, you will get 3750 credits per month, up to 7500 image generations, early access to new AI models, and 60% ad revenue share

Canva Pros and Cons
Pros:
- A user-friendly interface
- Canva is a great tool for people who want to create professional graphics but don’t have graphic design skills.
- Hundreds of templates, so you'll never have to start from scratch.
- Wide variety of templates to fit multiple uses
- Branding kits to keep your team consistent with the brand colors and fonts
- Creating visual content on the go
- You can find royalty free images, audio, and video without having to subscribe to another service.
Cons:
- Some professional templates are available for Pro user only
- Advanced photo editing features like blurring or erasing a specific area are missing.
- Some elements that fall outside of a design are tricky to retrieve.
- Features (like Canva presentations) could use some improvement.
- If you are a regular user of Adobe products, you might find Canva's features limited.
- Prefers to work with vectors. Especially logos.
- Expensive enterprise pricing
Conclusion
In general, Canva is an excellent tool for those who need simple images for projects. If you are a graphic designer with experience, you will find Canva’s platform lacking in customization and advanced features – particularly vectors. But if you have little design experience, you will find Canva easier to use than advanced graphic design tools like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator for most projects.

Chinese rival app Xiaohongshu is overwhelmed by ‘TikTok refugees’ in US

Social media accounts blocked for breaking Beijing rules as millions of users join up before ban takes effect
Nine invaluable things I’ve learned from TikTok
When Angelica Oung received the notification that her Xiaohongshu account had been blocked for violating the social media app’s code of conduct, her mind started racing.
The only picture she had posted on her account, apart from her profile headshot, was of herself wearing an inflatable polar bear suit, holding a sign saying: “I love nuclear”. What could be the problem with that, wondered Oung, a clean energy activist in Taiwan.

The average TikTok user spends almost one hour each day on the app. However, the screen time of American users is about to be rapidly reduced, as the app is set to be banned in the US.
On Friday the US Supreme Court rejected an appeal against a law that would see the social media platform banned over national security concerns. TikTok’s China-based parent company ByteDance had challenged the law, arguing that it violates free speech protections for more than 170 million users.

Uncharted territory for the WHO if Trump withdraws US membership
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 13:00:27 GMT
WHO is ‘critical in protecting US business interests’, says CEO of firm that may see lean years if Trump carries out vow

Last orders? Soaring costs and declining demand take toll on Japan’s legendary izakaya

It was not that long ago that curfews and alcohol bans introduced to limit the spread of Covid-19 forced izakaya – informal, boozy salons that range in size from cosy joints serving yakitori (chicken skewers) to cavernous spaces with seemingly endless menus – to call last orders at what would have normally been the busiest time of the evening.

Caryl Phillips: ‘It was Britain that made me a writer’

The New York-based Kittitian-British author on why he set his new novel in the immigrant community of 1960s Notting Hill, the pitfalls of celebrity, and how he never misses a Leeds United match
Caryl Phillips, 66, was born in Saint Kitts and raised in Leeds. The author of 12 novels, including 1993’s Booker-shortlisted Crossing the River, he lives in New York and for the past 20 years has taught creative writing at Yale University. He and I met on Portobello Road in Notting Hill, the location of his new novel, Another Man in the Street, in which a young West Indian finds himself collecting rent for a 1960s slumlord.
Tell us how this book began life.
A few years ago I was wandering around these streets, thinking it doesn’t look like the place I used to wander around as a student: no reggae shops, no guys on the corner smoking dope. It’s where Beckham lives! David Cameron’s got a house here. I began to think about how Notting Hill changed, and the nature of that change, and my own relationship to this gentrified, almost theme-park area of London that years ago meant something entirely different to me.

Court extends impeached South Korean president’s detention
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 20:42:06 GMT
Seoul court says there is ‘concern’ that Yoon Suk Yeol could destroy evidence if he were released
A South Korean court has granted an extension of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s detention, saying there was “concern” that Yoon could “destroy evidence” in a criminal probe related to his short-lived declaration of martial law in early December.
The impeached president of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, had argued that he be released from custody before a court in Seoul.

Suicides, new tactics and propaganda iPads: details from captured North Koreans expose new foe in Ukraine
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 11:22:49 GMT
Discovery of two injured servicemen sent from Pyongyang and disguised as Russian fighters blows apart myth that Zelenskyy’s fight is solely with Moscow
The news was sensational. It travelled quickly among Ukrainian soldiers fighting in Russia’s Kursk region. “I heard from a friend of a friend,” one officer, Vitalii Ovcharenko, recalled. “This was half an hour after it happened. My friend said: ‘We’ve got a North Korean prisoner! He’s in shock but OK.’ I said: ‘Wow.’” Ovcharenko added: “Everyone wanted a selfie. They wrapped him in a blanket and gave him tea.”
Last week’s capture of two North Korean servicemen was an extraordinary moment in Russia’s bloody war against Ukraine. The Kremlin has taken elaborate steps to conceal the presence of 12,000 elite troops sent in autumn by Pyongyang to Russia. At camps in the Far East they were given Russian equipment: uniforms, rifles and fake military documents.

UK stalls Chagos Islands deal until Trump administration can ‘consider detail’

The UK government will not sign off a deal to hand back the Chagos Islands to Mauritius until Donald Trump’s administration has had a chance to consider the future of the joint military base, Downing Street has confirmed.
Allies of the US president-elect have been critical of the deal because of the implications for the strategically important Diego Garcia base, with concerns that it could bolster Chinese interests in the Indian Ocean.

Singer-songwriter Betty Boo looks back: ‘I was very naive in the 90s. It was only years later I realised people were on loads of drugs’
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 12:00:26 GMT
The Doin’ the Do singer on navigating the wild 90s, writing for other artists, and why she stepped out of the limelight for 30 years
Born in 1970, Alison Clarkson, AKA Betty Boo, is a singer-songwriter, rapper and producer. She grew up in west London with her Scottish mother, Malaysian father and brother, and her first group was rap trio the She Rockers. In 1990 she launched her solo career as Betty Boo. With her platinum-selling debut, Boomania, she achieved three Top 10 singles, a Brit award for best British breakthrough act, and international success, before stepping out of the limelight for three decades. During her hiatus, she co-wrote Hear’Say’s Pure and Simple (then the fastest-selling debut single of all time in the UK) and worked with Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Girls Aloud and Blur’s Alex James. She now lives with her film producer husband, Paul Toogood. Her new album, Rip Up the Rulebook, is out now.
It was an exciting and surreal moment when this photograph was taken. I had just won a Brit award and there was so much attention on me it felt as if I was the bride at a wedding.

‘We can all find beauty in everyday life – even in unpleasant places’: Jan Schölzel’s best phone shot
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 10:00:22 GMT
The German photographer hopes the image he shot in a public bathroom in Malaysia will inspire others to explore their own ideas of beauty
In 2018, when Jan Schölzel was on the Malaysian archipelago of Langkawi, some days were so humid, he found it difficult to leave his accommodation. “It was the hottest, most humid place I’ve ever been,” says Schölzel, who currently lives in Hanover, Germany. “This must have been one of the cooler days, because we went to visit a waterfall.”
After fish head soup for lunch – a local delicacy – he spent some time in the water before heading to use a nearby bathroom. This image, taken on an iPhone SE, was shot facing the entrance.

Friday Squid Blogging: Cotton-and-Squid-Bone Sponge
2025-01-10T22:06:47Z
News:
A sponge made of cotton and squid bone that has absorbed about 99.9% of microplastics in water samples in China could provide an elusive answer to ubiquitous microplastic pollution in water across the globe, a new report suggests.
[…]
The study tested the material in an irrigation ditch, a lake, seawater and a pond, where it removed up to 99.9% of plastic. It addressed 95%-98% of plastic after five cycles, which the authors say is remarkable reusability.
The sponge is made from chitin extracted from squid bone and cotton cellulose, materials that are often used to address pollution. Cost, secondary pollution and technological complexities have stymied many other filtration systems, but large-scale production of the new material is possible because it is cheap, and raw materials are easy to obtain, the authors say...

Mateta at the double as Crystal Palace cruise to win against West Ham
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 17:13:38 GMT
This was not a good afternoon for Graham Potter. West Ham ended it with 10 men thanks to Konstantinos Mavropanos’s latest piece of clumsiness, failed to register a single shot on target and lost to a team with that most elusive of creatures: a striker with the awareness to link up with teammates, the physicality to rough up his markers and the ability to put the ball in the back of the net.
What West Ham would give for their search for a new forward to end with them signing one as smart and clinical as Jean-Philippe Mateta. Potter’s calm after this listless defeat to a crisp and clinical Crystal Palace could not hide the obvious truth about how badly reinforcements are required. West Ham were as blunt as it gets and although the situation will improve when Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville regain fitness this woeful performance will surely intensify efforts to bring in at least one more attacker this month.

It’s time to ditch neoprene. Here are seven alternative winter wetsuits for responsible surfers
Fri, 17 Jan 2025 18:00:03 GMT
Our expert picks the top wetsuits to keep you warm whatever the weather, so you can ride the waves year-round
• The fitness gear that made you fitter
Gone are the days when surfers needed a woolly jumper under their wetsuit – or to wear two wetsuits – to stay warm. Wetsuit tech has come a long way in recent years and now offer far greater protection against the cold. This shift has meant more of us are surfing all year round, even in the chilliest of British winters.
But such innovation has come at a cost, as explained in The Big Sea, a documentary made by two surfers from the north-east of England. The film shows the effects of producing neoprene, the synthetic rubber used to make most surf wetsuits, on the predominantly black and low-income residents of Reserve in Louisiana, where cancer rates are alarmingly high.
Best overall winter wetsuit:
Patagonia R4 Regulator front zip hooded full suit
Women’s £560 at Patagonia
Men’s £560 at Patagonia
Best budget winter wetsuit:
C-Skins NuWave Solace/Session 5/4 chest zip steamer
Women’s £233.95 at Sorted Surf Shop
Men’s £244.39 at Ocean Sports Board Riders
Best winter wetsuit for flexibility:
Billabong 5/4mm Furnace natural chest zip wetsuit
Women’s £410 at Billabong
Men’s £410 at Billabong
Best winter wetsuit for warmth:

‘Not second screen enough’: is Netflix deliberately dumbing down TV so people can watch while scrolling?
Fri, 17 Jan 2025 16:08:17 GMT
Streaming insiders have claimed they’re being made to rewrite scripts for viewers who use their phones while watching. Is this the end of prestige TV? Or pure fiction?
Be honest: how much attention do you pay when you watch TV? If you’re familiar with the ritual of half-watching a series or film – Netflix on in the background while you check out what your arch enemy has just posted on Instagram, say – it may surprise you to hear that Netflix doesn’t just know you engage in this obscene behaviour. It actually wants you to carry on.
The streamer was in the news recently thanks to an excellent piece by Will Tavlin in n+1, which reminded readers of the platform’s microgenre of “casual viewing”: TV shows and movies designed to be watched while doing something else. One paragraph in particular incited a great deal of frustration. Tavlin claimed that Netflix have told various screenwriters to have their protagonists “announce what they’re doing so that viewers who have this program on in the background can follow along”.

Most Frequently Asked Questions About NFTs(Non-Fungible Tokens)
Sun, 06 Feb 2022 10:04:00 +0000
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are the most popular digital assets today, capturing the attention of cryptocurrency investors, whales and people from around the world. People find it amazing that some users spend thousands or millions of dollars on a single NFT-based image of a monkey or other token, but you can simply take a screenshot for free. So here we share some freuently asked question about NFTs.
1) What is an NFT?
NFT stands for non-fungible token, which is a cryptographic token on a blockchain with unique identification codes that distinguish it from other tokens. NFTs are unique and not interchangeable, which means no two NFTs are the same. NFTs can be a unique artwork, GIF, Images, videos, Audio album. in-game items, collectibles etc.
2) What is Blockchain?
A blockchain is a distributed digital ledger that allows for the secure storage of data. By recording any kind of information—such as bank account transactions, the ownership of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), or Decentralized Finance (DeFi) smart contracts—in one place, and distributing it to many different computers, blockchains ensure that data can’t be manipulated without everyone in the system being aware.
3) What makes an NFT valuable?
The value of an NFT comes from its ability to be traded freely and securely on the blockchain, which is not possible with other current digital ownership solutionsThe NFT points to its location on the blockchain, but doesn’t necessarily contain the digital property. For example, if you replace one bitcoin with another, you will still have the same thing. If you buy a non-fungible item, such as a movie ticket, it is impossible to replace it with any other movie ticket because each ticket is unique to a specific time and place.
4) How do NFTs work?
One of the unique characteristics of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is that they can be tokenised to create a digital certificate of ownership that can be bought, sold and traded on the blockchain.
As with crypto-currency, records of who owns what are stored on a ledger that is maintained by thousands of computers around the world. These records can’t be forged because the whole system operates on an open-source network.
NFTs also contain smart contracts—small computer programs that run on the blockchain—that give the artist, for example, a cut of any future sale of the token.
5) What’s the connection between NFTs and cryptocurrency?
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) aren't cryptocurrencies, but they do use blockchain technology. Many NFTs are based on Ethereum, where the blockchain serves as a ledger for all the transactions related to said NFT and the properties it represents.5) How to make an NFT?
Anyone can create an NFT. All you need is a digital wallet, some ethereum tokens and a connection to an NFT marketplace where you’ll be able to upload and sell your creations
6) How to validate the authencity of an NFT?
When you purchase a stock in NFT, that purchase is recorded on the blockchain—the bitcoin ledger of transactions—and that entry acts as your proof of ownership.
7) How is an NFT valued? What are the most expensive NFTs?
The value of an NFT varies a lot based on the digital asset up for grabs. People use NFTs to trade and sell digital art, so when creating an NFT, you should consider the popularity of your digital artwork along with historical statistics.
In the year 2021, a digital artist called Pak created an artwork called The Merge. It was sold on the Nifty Gateway NFT market for $91.8 million.
8) Can NFTs be used as an investment?
Non-fungible tokens can be used in investment opportunities. One can purchase an NFT and resell it at a profit. Certain NFT marketplaces let sellers of NFTs keep a percentage of the profits from sales of the assets they create.
9) Will NFTs be the future of art and collectibles?
Many people want to buy NFTs because it lets them support the arts and own something cool from their favorite musicians, brands, and celebrities. NFTs also give artists an opportunity to program in continual royalties if someone buys their work. Galleries see this as a way to reach new buyers interested in art.
10) How do we buy an NFTs?
There are many places to buy digital assets, like opensea and their policies vary. On top shot, for instance, you sign up for a waitlist that can be thousands of people long. When a digital asset goes on sale, you are occasionally chosen to purchase it.
11) Can i mint NFT for free?
To mint an NFT token, you must pay some amount of gas fee to process the transaction on the Etherum blockchain, but you can mint your NFT on a different blockchain called Polygon to avoid paying gas fees. This option is available on OpenSea and this simply denotes that your NFT will only be able to trade using Polygon's blockchain and not Etherum's blockchain. Mintable allows you to mint NFTs for free without paying any gas fees.
12) Do i own an NFT if i screenshot it?
The answer is no. Non-Fungible Tokens are minted on the blockchain using cryptocurrencies such as Etherum, Solana, Polygon, and so on. Once a Non-Fungible Token is minted, the transaction is recorded on the blockchain and the contract or license is awarded to whoever has that Non-Fungible Token in their wallet.
12) Why are people investing so much in NFT?
Non-fungible tokens have gained the hearts of people around the world, and they have given digital creators the recognition they deserve. One of the remarkable things about non-fungible tokens is that you can take a screenshot of one, but you don’t own it. This is because when a non-fungible token is created, then the transaction is stored on the blockchain, and the license or contract to hold such a token is awarded to the person owning the token in their digital wallet.
You can sell your work and creations by attaching a license to it on the blockchain, where its ownership can be transferred. This lets you get exposure without losing full ownership of your work. Some of the most successful projects include Cryptopunks, Bored Ape Yatch Club NFTs, SandBox, World of Women and so on. These NFT projects have gained popularity globally and are owned by celebrities and other successful entrepreneurs. Owning one of these NFTs gives you an automatic ticket to exclusive business meetings and life-changing connections.

Darwin Núñez’s injury-time double at Brentford keeps Liverpool on title track
Sat, 18 Jan 2025 17:21:18 GMT
The Brentford fans ought to have known better. After all, Darwin Núñez had scored a fabulous goal against their team in the corresponding fixture last season. Still, when the centre-forward entered as a 65th-minute substitute, they were ready with their taunt, one that compared him unfavourably with his Liverpool predecessor, Andy Carroll.
Núñez had travelled to London having scored four times all season. The scrutiny burned. It is no kind of return for an £85m record signing. Arne Slot had insisted he would come good, that it was simply a matter of getting him into the right spaces and situations against deep-set opponents. How it would do so at the very last.

Italian region comes surprise eighth place and has plenty of budget package deals available, according to Which?
January is the best month to book a summer holiday – and this year there is a surprise budget option: Tuscany. According to Which?, the central Italian region is among the cheapest package holiday destinations for 2025.
Researchers analysed almost 6,000 package holidays from three of the UK’s biggest tour operators, Jet2holidays, Tui and easyJet Holidays. Tuscany, more usually associated with luxury villa holidays amid rolling hills and vineyards and the expensive hotels of Florence, made it into the top 10 cheapest package destinations, behind better-known budget areas such as Costa Brava in Spain and Corfu in Greece.

Finisterre Nieuwland 5.5/4.5mm Yulex chest zip hooded wetsuit
