Police in Germany have arrested eight suspected members of a far-right terror cell alleged to have been plotting the armed takeover of eastern regions to establish a Nazi-inspired regime that would carry out “ethnic cleansing”, federal prosecutors said.
Amid a crackdown on neo-Nazi militants, the German nationals calling themselves Sächsische Separatisten (Saxonian Separatists) were taken into custody on Tuesday in pre-dawn raids on 20 premises in eastern Germany and the Polish border city of Zgorzelec, with another seven suspects in investigators’ sights.

Heightened risk Cádiz river could overflow, with yellow and orange rainfall warnings for southern regions
The low-pressure system responsible for Spain’s most devastating floods in decades in Valencia also set new rainfall records across south-eastern Spain. In Jerez de la Frontera, 115mm of rain fell in 24 hours on Wednesday – the wettest day on record for the southern Spanish city. The deluge caused widespread flooding and road closures, and there is a heightened risk that the River Barbate in Cádiz could overflow as more rain is forecast through Friday and into the weekend.
While the rare red warning issued on Thursday for Valencia has expired, Spain’s national meteorological service, Aemet, has maintained yellow and orange rainfall warnings for southern and Mediterranean regions as storms continue to push in.

Associated British Foods, the owner of discount clothing chain Primark, has posted a 43% rise in pre-tax profits for the last year.
ABF’s CEO, George Weston, says Primark achieved “good sales growth this year” (up 6%, or 1.2% on a like-for-like basis) and managed to increase its profit margin (it rose to 11.7% in the last year, up from 8.2% in 2023).
“We think that Christmas is going to be good.”
Lower sales in our compound feed businesses reflected reduced commodity prices and continued soft demand in the UK and China.
Market conditions in the UK remained challenging due to reduced herd sizes and excess feed production capacity and in China the market was depressed by the economic environment and low farm profitability.
Democrats currently hold a 51-49 advantage in the Senate. Thirty-four seats are being contested this year and Democrats hold 23 of those seats while Republicans hold 11 which gives the GOP a numerical advantage in the ability to gain seats.
With the retirement of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Republicans are likely to gain that seat and are well positioned to flip Sen. Jon Tester’s seat (D-MT). This would give the GOP 51 seats and the majority. Ohio is the GOP’s next best pick-up opportunity and while there are several other close races (Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin). We think Democrats will likely (but not definitely) retain those seats.
Regardless of which party wins the House, we think the majority will be less than 10 seats which will make governing challenging (again)

But it is four years until the next general election, and the Tory party is undergoing a shift to a new generation of frontbenchers, and all of these Conservatives have a chance to impress the electorate.

Djokovic pulling out means that for the first time since 2001 there will be no member of the ’big three’ present at the ATP Finals. It is one of the greatest injustices of video game history that the Sega Saturn is widely considered a failure. The console, which was launched in Japan on 22 November 1994, almost two weeks ahead of the PlayStation, is continually and pejoratively compared to its rival. We hear about how Sony produced a high-end machine laser targeted at producing fast 3D graphics, while Sega’s engineers had to add an extra graphics chip to the Saturn at the last minute. We read that Sony’s Ken Kutaragi provided creators with a much more user-friendly development system. We know that Sony undercut the price of Sega’s machine, using its might as a consumer electronics giant to take the financial hit. All of that is true, but what aren’t always mentioned are the vast success of the Japanese Saturn launch, and the extraordinary legacy that Sega’s 32-bit machine left behind.
What I remember is this: Edge magazine reporting from Akihabara in Tokyo, where its Japanese correspondent had joined a queue outside the major Laox computer game centre to try and snag one of the thousand or so machines not already preordered by fans. Two-and-a-half hours later, the writer emerged with his purchase, which included a copy of Virtua Fighter, the best arcade fighting game of the year. It was a lucky buy: the shelves were emptying fast all over town. Sega shifted an unprecedented 200,000 units that day.

Her distinctive rasp is still magnificent at 76, as she swings through 60 years of hits from Shout! to Relight My Fire
It has, says Lulu, been “hard to put all the moments together” in her two-hour farewell show. One can understand why that might have proved tough. As the tour’s subtitle makes clear, she has been famous for 60 years, but her career was all over the map almost from the beginning.
A tiny figure in a sequinned hoodie and huge sunglasses – we should all be so lucky to look as good as Lulu does at 76 – she opens with Shout!, taken at a more sedate pace than she did aged 15: her debut single, it became a huge hit, but she couldn’t follow it up, which led her to shift from raucous R&B to bubblegum and easy listening. The material she recorded ranged from the sublime – the movie theme To Sir With Love was, a little incredibly, the US’s biggest-selling single of 1967; her version of it tonight gets a standing ovation – to the abysmal. Boom-Bang-a-Bang was a Eurovision winner that seemed to exist primarily in order to make Sandie Shaw feel better about having to sing Puppet on a String – cheer up, at least it wasn’t this. Lulu still looks winningly mortified singing it 55 years later, although that’s nothing compared to the expressions on the faces of her band, one of those aggregations of journeymen musicians in which the drummer looks like a member of Mastodon, the guitarist seems to be moonlighting from a country and western outfit, the bassist from a cerebral Pitchfork-approved indie band.

Well … we finally got to 5 November. Of course, you know the story. Once upon a time, there was a bad guy who wanted to set fire to a country’s political system. Metaphorically, but also literally. I mean, he wasn’t subtle, this guy. This Guy, I should say, because his name was Guy Fawkes. Why – who did you think I was talking about?
Because time’s a great healer, Britons now celebrate the thwarting of this truly awful Guy’s insurrection with fireworks, fires and organised effigy-burning. But the good version of those things – not the kind we do when we go out of a football tournament in the later stages. We’re still working on teasing out the family fun in those particular moments.

The year is 1991. The place, the University of Chicago. The person, Gary Becker, who just over a year later would become a Nobel laureate in economics. In a famous academic paper, he notes: “A popular seafood restaurant in Palo Alto, California, does not take reservations, and every day it has long queues for tables during prime hours. Almost directly across the street is another seafood restaurant with comparable food, slightly higher prices, and similar service and other amenities. Yet this restaurant has many empty seats most of the time.”
The question is why. Why doesn’t the popular restaurant raise prices, which would reduce the queue for seats? Why doesn’t it increase supply (expand capacity) to reduce the excess demand and capitalise on its popularity? The answer is that doing that would probably not be optimal. It might be highly detrimental to the business.

Off the west coast of Greenland, a 17-metre (56ft) aluminium sailing boat creeps through a narrow, rocky fjord in the Arctic twilight. The research team onboard, still bleary-eyed from the rough nine-day passage across the Labrador Sea, lower nets to collect plankton. This is the first time anyone has sequenced the DNA of the tiny marine creatures that live here.
Watching the nets with palpable excitement is Prof Leonid Moroz, a neuroscientist at the University of Florida’s Whitney marine lab. “This is what the world looked like when life began,” he tells his friend, Peter Molnar, the expedition leader with whom he co-founded the Ocean Genome Atlas Project (Ogap).

Concerns about US democracy grow with the electoral college’s role in enabling presidents to win without the popular vote, potentially benefiting Donald Trump in 2024
The last two presidential elections have raised serious questions about the strength of American democracy and, unfortunately, Tuesday’s election may deepen these concerns. Central to this issue is the electoral college, which allows Americans to elect their president indirectly through state-appointed electors. Though the electoral college has stirred controversy for more than 200 years, Donald Trump’s 2016 victory – despite losing the popular vote by 3 million – intensified the sense that the system undermines democratic principles. It would be gut-wrenching to see the unhinged, vengeful and power-hungry Mr Trump win because of the electoral college’s antidemocratic result.
Yet that might happen. Post-civil war, four presidents – all Republicans – have lost the popular vote yet won the White House via the electoral college. Mr Trump’s 2024 campaign has seemed intent on repeating this feat or creating enough chaos to push the election to the House of Representatives, where Republican delegations are likely to prevail. His strategy relies on divisive rhetoric, marked by inflammatory and often discriminatory themes. Rather than bridging divides, he aims to deepen them – seeking an electoral college win by rallying his most fervent supporters.

Watch the second episode of the ExoMars Rosalind Franklin rover mission – Europe’s ambitious exploration journey to search for past and present signs of life on Mars.
This episode starts with Rosalind searching for traces of life below the martian surface using a ground penetrating radar and a set of cameras.
The rover will dig, collect, and investigate the chemical composition of material collected by a drill. Rosalind Franklin will be the first rover to reach a depth of up to two metres deep below the surface, acquiring samples that have been protected from surface radiation and extreme temperatures.
Rosalind Franklin uses the WISDOM radar to help scientists on Earth decide where to drill. Besides identifying the most promising targets for sampling, WISDOM will help the rover avoid potential hazards, such as the presence of buried rocks that could damage the drill.
The scientific eyes of the rover are set on the Panoramic Camera suite known as PanCam. The Close-UP Imager (CLUPI) sits on the side of the drill box, a camera designed to acquire high-resolution, colour, close-up images of outcrops, rocks and soils. PanCam and CLUPI will help scientists find the most promising spots to drill. These instruments can also investigate very fine outcrop details and image drill samples before they are sent into the rover’s laboratory.
After the rover retracts its drill, the sample is in a special chamber at the tip. Under the reduced martian gravity (38% of Earth’s), the material drops onto a special “hand” that the rover can extend to the front to collect drill samples.
The mission will serve to demonstrate key technologies that Europe needs to master for future planetary exploration missions.

Rover trials in a quarry in the UK showing a four-wheeled rover, known as Codi, using its robotic arm and a powerful computer vision system to pick up sample tubes.
The rover drives to the samples with an accuracy of 10cm, constantly mapping the terrain. Codi uses its arm and four cameras to locate the sample tube, retrieve it and safely store it on the rover – all of it without human intervention. At every stop, the rover uses stereo cameras to build up a 180-degree map of the surroundings and plan its next maneouvres. Once parked, the camera on top of the mast detects the tube and estimates its position with respect to the rover. The robotic arm initiates a complex choreography to move closer to the sample, fetch it and store it.
The sample tubes are a replica of the hermetically sealed samples inside which NASA’s Perseverance rover is collecting precious martian soil inside. To most people on Earth, they resemble lightsabres.
The reddish terrain, although not fully representative of Mars in terms of soil composition, has plenty of slopes and rocks of different sizes, similar to what a rover might encounter on the martian surface. Quarry testing is an essential next step in the development process, providing a unique and dynamic landscape that cannot be replicated indoors.
ESA continues to run further research using the rover to maintain and develop rover capabilities in Europe.

Associated British Foods, the owner of discount clothing chain Primark, has posted a 43% rise in pre-tax profits for the last year.
ABF’s CEO, George Weston, says Primark achieved “good sales growth this year” (up 6%, or 1.2% on a like-for-like basis) and managed to increase its profit margin (it rose to 11.7% in the last year, up from 8.2% in 2023).
“We think that Christmas is going to be good.”
Lower sales in our compound feed businesses reflected reduced commodity prices and continued soft demand in the UK and China.
Market conditions in the UK remained challenging due to reduced herd sizes and excess feed production capacity and in China the market was depressed by the economic environment and low farm profitability.
Democrats currently hold a 51-49 advantage in the Senate. Thirty-four seats are being contested this year and Democrats hold 23 of those seats while Republicans hold 11 which gives the GOP a numerical advantage in the ability to gain seats.
With the retirement of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Republicans are likely to gain that seat and are well positioned to flip Sen. Jon Tester’s seat (D-MT). This would give the GOP 51 seats and the majority. Ohio is the GOP’s next best pick-up opportunity and while there are several other close races (Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin). We think Democrats will likely (but not definitely) retain those seats.
Regardless of which party wins the House, we think the majority will be less than 10 seats which will make governing challenging (again)

“Tahini has a beautiful versatility,” says Fadi Kattan, chef/co-founder of Akub in London and author of Bethlehem, “from a drizzle over your morning toast or granola, to an earthy background flavour in a sauce, to all sorts of cakes and cookies.” So the question really ought to be: is there anything this creamy, rich ground sesame paste can’t turn its hand to?
For Kattan, autumn means a kofta bake, featuring mince – “ideally half lamb, half beef” – finely chopped onions, chopped parsley, a bit of salt and some spices: “Black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and a predominant presence of allspice.” That’s all combined, then it goes into a greased roasting tray and is baked at 180C for 20 minutes. While that’s cooking, “make a paste of tahini with a splash each of lemon juice and water, crushed garlic and salt”. That gets spread over the top of the half-cooked kofta, then back in the oven with it for about half an hour to get nice and crackly. “It’s a very flavoursome and warming dish,” says Kattan, who would be inclined to serve it with a simple rocket salad dressed with olive oil, lemon and sumac.

There will, I almost guarantee, be a pumpkin left from Halloween. I will balance the sweetness of the flesh with a miso sauce into which I have also stirred mustard and lemon juice. Basted as the pumpkin roasts, the dark dressing will balance the pumpkin’s more candied notes. Sweet and a little spicy – just the thing for a cold night around the bonfire.
Preheat the oven to 200C/gas mark 6. Cut 750g of pumpkin into slim wedges, removing any seeds and fibres as you go. Place the slices in a single layer in a roasting tin (or as near as possible, depending on its size), then spoon 3 tbsp of groundnut oil over the pumpkin. Score 4 apples around the middle with a sharp knife, then tuck them among the pumpkin slices and roast for 30 minutes.

In a famous academic paper, he notes: “A popular seafood restaurant in Palo Alto, California, does not take reservations, and every day it has long queues for tables during prime hours. Almost directly across the street is another seafood restaurant with comparable food, slightly higher prices, and similar service and other amenities. Yet this restaurant has many empty seats most of the time.”
The question is why. Why doesn’t the popular restaurant raise prices, which would reduce the queue for seats? Why doesn’t it increase supply (expand capacity) to reduce the excess demand and capitalise on its popularity? The answer is that doing that would probably not be optimal. It might be highly detrimental to the business.

Blockchain technology was originally invented in 1991 by two mathematicians, Stuart Haber and W. Scot Stornetta. They first proposed the system to ensure that timestamps could not be tampered with.
A few years later, in 1998, software developer Nick Szabo proposed using a similar kind of technology to secure a digital payments system he called “Bit Gold.” However, this innovation was not adopted until Satoshi Nakamoto claimed to have invented the first Blockchain and Bitcoin.
A blockchain is a distributed database shared between the nodes of a computer network. It saves information in digital format. Many people first heard of blockchain technology when they started to look up information about bitcoin.
Blockchain is used in cryptocurrency systems to ensure secure, decentralized records of transactions.
Blockchain allowed people to guarantee the fidelity and security of a record of data without the need for a third party to ensure accuracy.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s best estimate is that the programme to remove dangerous cladding from towers over 11 metres tall will cost an estimated £16.6bn – £5.1bn of that from the taxpayer – and so far only a third of the blocks that have been identified have been completed. The NAO reckons completing all the rest could take until 2037. The intention is to to recoup another £3.4bn from developers over 12 years from 2025 – though of course, Grenfell’s bereaved and survivors can expect to wait until at least 2027 before those suspected of being responsible for the disaster could face criminal trials. This is a bad joke.

My time management is quite old-fashioned, mainly consisting of a to-do list. Three columns if I’m feeling particularly efficient: work; admin; personal. I never date it. There are some items that crop up so unfailingly, a smarter person would take them as given – such as “walk dog”. It’s almost as if I only put it on to give myself the illusory satisfaction of definitely having achieved something. My son, endearingly, made his first to-do list when he was five, and it simply said “1. Wake up.”
So anyway, I sat down this morning to what looked like a perfectly plausible set of tasks.
Jilly Cooper. Whatever is happening in the world, even if Rivals hasn’t just landed on Disney+, there’s always something useful to say about Jilly Cooper.
Victoria’s Secret. Again, sounds about right: the brand is all the TikTokers are talking about, ever since their angel wings show last month. I’m not sure what the young ’uns are saying about it. Perhaps it was my intention to find out?
EastEnders, golden era. After things looked dicey with its viewing figures last year, the show has turned a corner, the plot lines have caught fire. In its 40th year it has a new lease of life, and someone, possibly me, should definitely find out why.
James Dyson. Yup. The UK industrialist is all over the papers, commenting hotly on Rachel Reeves’s budget while failing to mention the extent of the farmland that he owns, which was previously exempt from inheritance tax. Honestly, the brass neck of the man.
Walk dog.
Call Dad.
Find some better way to honour my father’s memory than circling the same drain of James Dyson’s character and the elaborate angel wings on some underwear models.
Don’t forget to walk the dog.

If the end of the world is really nigh, should I be investing in shorter-term savings schemes rather than a pension? I currently contribute 20% of my £117,000 salary to my pension and my employer pays 5%. I’m 44 and worry about imminent world wars over dwindling resources. I find it hard to believe a peaceful 20-year retirement beckons. Is there a way to invest in things I could access quickly if the poop really does hit the fan?

I sincerely hope your fears prove unfounded, but apocalyptic predictions will be prompting many to ask the same question. However, decisions around pension savings should not be taken lightly. I consulted Helen Morrissey, head of retirement analysis at Hargreaves Lansdown. She points out that your pension is not necessarily locked away until you reach state pension age and you can access a private pension pot at 55. The age limit rises to 57 in 2028, which means you could have your hands on your money in 13 years.

In the days after the budget, the headlines were dominated by talk of Rachel Reeves’s “tax and spend” bonanza. The message was clear: austerity is officially over. When there was concern about squeezed incomes, it was solely for workers. As the Mail front page put it: “Reeves’ £40bn tax bombshell for Britain’s strivers”. Almost a week later, there has still barely been a word about the policy set to hit the group long scapegoated as Britain’s skivers: the billions of pounds’ worth of benefit cuts for disabled people.
Making up just a couple of lines in a 77-minute speech, you’d have been forgiven for dozing past Reeves’ blink-and-you’d-miss-it bombshell. With a record number of Britons off work with long-term illness, the government will need to “reduce the benefits bill”, she said, before noting ministers had “inherited” the Conservatives’ plans to reform the work capability assessment (WCA). That plan, let’s not forget, was to take up to £4,900 a year each from 450,000 people who are too sick or disabled to work – a move that the Resolution Foundation says would “degrade living standards” for families already on some of the lowest incomes in the country.

Their three-day odyssey had a single goal: to get to the three-storey, Ottoman-style building on Apostolou Pavlou Street in the Greek port city where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish republic, was born and spent his early years. “He is our father,” Karakus said of the soldier-statesman who created the modern nation from the ruins of the Ottoman empire just over a century ago. “Atatürk is incredibly important to us. He is the best leader who ever came into this world.”
For the 43-year-old tax inspector, it was a “dream come true” to visit the house. “To come here and see his birthplace has meant so much,” she enthused. “It was wonderful even if I would have liked to have seen more from his childhood, a few more belongings, a few more personal effects.”

Concerns about US democracy grow with the electoral college’s role in enabling presidents to win without the popular vote, potentially benefiting Donald Trump in 2024
The last two presidential elections have raised serious questions about the strength of American democracy and, unfortunately, Tuesday’s election may deepen these concerns. Central to this issue is the electoral college, which allows Americans to elect their president indirectly through state-appointed electors. Though the electoral college has stirred controversy for more than 200 years, Donald Trump’s 2016 victory – despite losing the popular vote by 3 million – intensified the sense that the system undermines democratic principles. It would be gut-wrenching to see the unhinged, vengeful and power-hungry Mr Trump win because of the electoral college’s antidemocratic result.
Yet that might happen. Post-civil war, four presidents – all Republicans – have lost the popular vote yet won the White House via the electoral college. Mr Trump’s 2024 campaign has seemed intent on repeating this feat or creating enough chaos to push the election to the House of Representatives, where Republican delegations are likely to prevail. His strategy relies on divisive rhetoric, marked by inflammatory and often discriminatory themes. Rather than bridging divides, he aims to deepen them – seeking an electoral college win by rallying his most fervent supporters.

The announcement that the tuition fees paid by English students (but not Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish ones) are to rise next year is a response to the financial crisis threatening the sector. With about 40% of England’s universities suffering deficits, course closures and a fall in international applications following visa restrictions imposed by the last government, ministers needed to act. Higher education was left out of last week’s budget. But Labour has now accepted the case put by universities that the freeze on fees, which have stayed at £9,250 since 2017, should end.
Fortunately, it has also accepted that the pressure on students is not tenable. Fees for foundation year courses are to be lowered while maintenance loans will rise by just over £400 a year for the poorest students, a change that ministers hope will offset anger at rising fees. With recent figures showing that the proportion of students eligible for free school meals who progressed to university fell in 2022-23, Bridget Phillipson and her colleagues are right to be concerned. Clearly, the trend of widening access cannot be assumed.

Not a single country has contributed towards reparations for the victims and survivors of the Ugandan warlord Dominic Ongwen, despite the international criminal court awarding €52.4m (£44m) in February, according to the ICC Trust Fund for Victims (TFV).
The ICC reparations order – the largest in the court’s history – was issued after a 2021 ruling in which the court found Ongwen, a former commander of the Lord’s Resistance Army militia group, guilty of various war crimes committed between 2002 and 2005, including murder, torture, sexual enslavement, the conscription of children into hostilities, and brutal attacks on four camps for internally displaced people in northern Uganda.

Rover trials in a quarry in the UK showing a four-wheeled rover, known as Codi, using its robotic arm and a powerful computer vision system to pick up sample tubes.
The rover drives to the samples with an accuracy of 10cm, constantly mapping the terrain. Codi uses its arm and four cameras to locate the sample tube, retrieve it and safely store it on the rover – all of it without human intervention. At every stop, the rover uses stereo cameras to build up a 180-degree map of the surroundings and plan its next maneouvres. Once parked, the camera on top of the mast detects the tube and estimates its position with respect to the rover. The robotic arm initiates a complex choreography to move closer to the sample, fetch it and store it.
The sample tubes are a replica of the hermetically sealed samples inside which NASA’s Perseverance rover is collecting precious martian soil inside. To most people on Earth, they resemble lightsabres.
The reddish terrain, although not fully representative of Mars in terms of soil composition, has plenty of slopes and rocks of different sizes, similar to what a rover might encounter on the martian surface. Quarry testing is an essential next step in the development process, providing a unique and dynamic landscape that cannot be replicated indoors.
ESA continues to run further research using the rover to maintain and develop rover capabilities in Europe.

Surely this goes to the heart of the problem. With figures mooted on behalf of claimants being of the order of £18tn, no British prime minister who has any thought of long-term survival can engage realistically with a process that would more than totally bankrupt their country. Indeed, no one appears, in our media at least, to have explained exactly what the claimant countries would do with such vast sums should they receive them.
Interestingly, Koram points out that the £20m paid to enslavers via the 1837 Slave Compensation Act is “worth about £17bn today”. Such a figure is surely a much more sensible basis to start a discussion about enhanced development aid for the Caricom countries. Indeed, as this is in the ballpark of other domestic compensation schemes, such as the £11.8bn being set aside for victims of the infected blood scandal, it might prove harder for the prime minister to resist a similar discussion around slavery.

On Tuesday, residents in Alabama’s newly redrawn congressional district two will vote for the first time.
A June 2023 ruling by the supreme court created the new district in the Black belt, which spans from the state’s Choctaw county, on its western border, to Russell county, in the east, where Black people make up 48.7% of the population. The decision also preserved the only other majority-Black district in the state – district seven. Voters in district two will have the opportunity to increase their political power, a historic change that has the potential to give voters in the Black belt a representative government.

Climate activist Nyombi Morris became outspoken about LGBTQ+ rights after his sister was outed as a lesbian and expelled from school. Last year, Uganda passed a new law that imposes up to 20 years in prison for 'recruitment, promotion and funding' of same-sex 'activities', and life imprisonment or the death penalty for certain same-sex acts. There’s a steepled-fingers argument to be had about whether live-event or gallery movies can ever compare to the thrill of seeing things for real and, furthermore, whether they undermine the in-person culture economy. The counter-argument, of course, is that these event films extend an opera/play/show’s reach and give access to an audience who would otherwise never get to experience it, even at one remove. Well, this is something the estimable Exhibition on Screen brand has no doubt had to confront over the years; by combining insightful critical commentary as well as suitably graceful in-gallery camerawork, their films operate as a watchable counterpoint to the live experience – as well as, more often than not, moving beyond a single-exhibition focus, like their recent overview of contemporary Japanese art.
All this is a little more moot, however, with their new film, which releases in cinemas while its parent show, the London National Gallery’s winter blockbuster Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers, still has weeks to run. Presumably the National’s powers-that-be see no threat to visitor numbers; rather like the FA Cup final, a landmark Van Gogh exhibition is surely big enough to ensure a sellout whatever the ancillary coverage. It’s also been getting rave reviews – including five stars from both the Guardian and the Observer’s critics – which will no doubt supercharge this film’s chances in cinemas.

Her distinctive rasp is still magnificent at 76, as she swings through 60 years of hits from Shout! to Relight My Fire
It has, says Lulu, been “hard to put all the moments together” in her two-hour farewell show. One can understand why that might have proved tough. As the tour’s subtitle makes clear, she has been famous for 60 years, but her career was all over the map almost from the beginning.
A tiny figure in a sequinned hoodie and huge sunglasses – we should all be so lucky to look as good as Lulu does at 76 – she opens with Shout!, taken at a more sedate pace than she did aged 15: her debut single, it became a huge hit, but she couldn’t follow it up, which led her to shift from raucous R&B to bubblegum and easy listening. The material she recorded ranged from the sublime – the movie theme To Sir With Love was, a little incredibly, the US’s biggest-selling single of 1967; her version of it tonight gets a standing ovation – to the abysmal. Boom-Bang-a-Bang was a Eurovision winner that seemed to exist primarily in order to make Sandie Shaw feel better about having to sing Puppet on a String – cheer up, at least it wasn’t this. Lulu still looks winningly mortified singing it 55 years later, although that’s nothing compared to the expressions on the faces of her band, one of those aggregations of journeymen musicians in which the drummer looks like a member of Mastodon, the guitarist seems to be moonlighting from a country and western outfit, the bassist from a cerebral Pitchfork-approved indie band.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are the most popular digital assets today, capturing the attention of cryptocurrency investors, whales and people from around the world. People find it amazing that some users spend thousands or millions of dollars on a single NFT-based image of a monkey or other token, but you can simply take a screenshot for free. So here we share some freuently asked question about NFTs.
NFT stands for non-fungible token, which is a cryptographic token on a blockchain with unique identification codes that distinguish it from other tokens. NFTs are unique and not interchangeable, which means no two NFTs are the same. NFTs can be a unique artwork, GIF, Images, videos, Audio album. in-game items, collectibles etc.
A blockchain is a distributed digital ledger that allows for the secure storage of data. By recording any kind of information—such as bank account transactions, the ownership of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), or Decentralized Finance (DeFi) smart contracts—in one place, and distributing it to many different computers, blockchains ensure that data can’t be manipulated without everyone in the system being aware.
The value of an NFT comes from its ability to be traded freely and securely on the blockchain, which is not possible with other current digital ownership solutionsThe NFT points to its location on the blockchain, but doesn’t necessarily contain the digital property. For example, if you replace one bitcoin with another, you will still have the same thing. If you buy a non-fungible item, such as a movie ticket, it is impossible to replace it with any other movie ticket because each ticket is unique to a specific time and place.
One of the unique characteristics of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) is that they can be tokenised to create a digital certificate of ownership that can be bought, sold and traded on the blockchain.
As with crypto-currency, records of who owns what are stored on a ledger that is maintained by thousands of computers around the world. These records can’t be forged because the whole system operates on an open-source network.
NFTs also contain smart contracts—small computer programs that run on the blockchain—that give the artist, for example, a cut of any future sale of the token.
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) aren't cryptocurrencies, but they do use blockchain technology. Many NFTs are based on Ethereum, where the blockchain serves as a ledger for all the transactions related to said NFT and the properties it represents.5) How to make an NFT?
Anyone can create an NFT. All you need is a digital wallet, some ethereum tokens and a connection to an NFT marketplace where you’ll be able to upload and sell your creations
When you purchase a stock in NFT, that purchase is recorded on the blockchain—the bitcoin ledger of transactions—and that entry acts as your proof of ownership.
The value of an NFT varies a lot based on the digital asset up for grabs. People use NFTs to trade and sell digital art, so when creating an NFT, you should consider the popularity of your digital artwork along with historical statistics.
In the year 2021, a digital artist called Pak created an artwork called The Merge. It was sold on the Nifty Gateway NFT market for $91.8 million.
Non-fungible tokens can be used in investment opportunities. One can purchase an NFT and resell it at a profit. Certain NFT marketplaces let sellers of NFTs keep a percentage of the profits from sales of the assets they create.
Many people want to buy NFTs because it lets them support the arts and own something cool from their favorite musicians, brands, and celebrities. NFTs also give artists an opportunity to program in continual royalties if someone buys their work. Galleries see this as a way to reach new buyers interested in art.
There are many places to buy digital assets, like opensea and their policies vary. On top shot, for instance, you sign up for a waitlist that can be thousands of people long. When a digital asset goes on sale, you are occasionally chosen to purchase it.
To mint an NFT token, you must pay some amount of gas fee to process the transaction on the Etherum blockchain, but you can mint your NFT on a different blockchain called Polygon to avoid paying gas fees. This option is available on OpenSea and this simply denotes that your NFT will only be able to trade using Polygon's blockchain and not Etherum's blockchain. Mintable allows you to mint NFTs for free without paying any gas fees.
The answer is no. Non-Fungible Tokens are minted on the blockchain using cryptocurrencies such as Etherum, Solana, Polygon, and so on. Once a Non-Fungible Token is minted, the transaction is recorded on the blockchain and the contract or license is awarded to whoever has that Non-Fungible Token in their wallet.
You can sell your work and creations by attaching a license to it on the blockchain, where its ownership can be transferred. This lets you get exposure without losing full ownership of your work. Some of the most successful projects include Cryptopunks, Bored Ape Yatch Club NFTs, SandBox, World of Women and so on. These NFT projects have gained popularity globally and are owned by celebrities and other successful entrepreneurs. Owning one of these NFTs gives you an automatic ticket to exclusive business meetings and life-changing connections.

Certain rocket ship enthusiasts also seem less interested in advancing science and more interested in having a wider territory to colonise and monetise.

Inside one of Waddesdon Manor’s Rapunzelesque round towers is a room named after the Ballets Russes stage designer Léon Bakst. In 1913, Bakst painted the seven panels here showing scenes from Sleeping Beauty. This year both house and illuminated gardens have Sleeping Beauty-inspired installations. Artists involved include the theatre designer Tom Piper, who helped make the Tower of London’s poppy cascade in 2014. Outside there are fairytale projections by Jamie Shiels, whose work appeared at the 2012 London Olympics. The Rothschild family’s turreted chateau looks spectacular dancing with coloured light, and the Weihnachtsmarkt-style market is back (until 22 December). There are later openings on Fridays from 22 November to Christmas.

Israeli travellers told to evacuate area immediately as police set up patrols and roadblocks
The golden sands of Sri Lanka’s Arugam Bay are usually carefree, a place for tourists to surf the famous break and relax on the beach.
But last week, the slow rhythm of the bay was dealt a shock. The US embassy, followed up by Sri Lankan police and Israel’s national security council, warned of a serious terrorist threat in the area. Israeli travellers were believed to be the intended target of a planned attack and were told to evacuate immediately. Hundreds of police and senior intelligence officials descended on the small coastal town, setting up patrols and road blocks.
