The idea of communing with nature is instilled from birth in Norway. I hiked through a rain-drenched forest to try it myself
‘Being outdoors is a natural way of living in Norway,” Bente Lier tells me over the phone. “It’s a very important part of what we call the good life.” Lier is the secretary general of Norsk Friluftsliv, which represents more than 950,000 members of 500 outdoor clubs in Norway. Her words ring in my ears as I trudge through torrential rain in a forest just north of Oslo.
I am here to learn about friluftsliv, a way of being that is part of the Norwegian national identity. The term was coined by the playwright Henrik Ibsen in his 1859 poem On the Heights, although the concept is much older. Its literal translation is “free-air life”, but Ibsen used it to convey a spiritual connection with nature. To modern Norwegians, it means participating in outdoor activities, but also has a deeper sense of de-stressing in nature and sharing in a common culture. Could this outdoor life hold the key to Norwegians’ health and happiness?

The stock has fallen 11% in the year to date, while the S&P 500 SPX has gained 13%.

Almost exactly two years ago, Netflix released Squid Game, the South Korean dystopian drama that temporarily took over social media. The Squid Game moment – and it was a moment, pervasive and fleeting – was an outsized version of the Netflix binge formula that, by late 2021 and especially after the mass couch event that was Covid, was so well-worn as to feel like clockwork. A show hits the streaming service all at once (in this case, nine episodes released worldwide on 17 September); it gains momentum online in memes, commentary and fan videos as part of an attention wildfire (142m households reportedly watched the show within a month); Netflix announces related projects building on the hype; the moment gives way to the next topic of the day and is consigned to the vast heap of viral internet history.
One could argue that Squid Game was the apotheosis and the denouement of the binge model – a massive phenomenon that, because it was available all at once, at people’s leisure, burned out quickly (see: Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and more). Since then, the model that defined its platform also seems headed for the dustbin; Netflix, which has very publicly faced subscriber and financial challenges in the past few years, is reportedly considering releasing Squid Game: The Challenge, the competition show spinoff of the series, in batches rather than all at once.

CTAS reported Tuesday fiscal first-quarter profit that topped expectations and nudged up its full-year outlook, while revenue rose in line with forecasts. Shares of Cintas, which was valued at $51.8 billion as of Monday’s close, were little changed ahead of the open. Net income for the quarter to Aug. 31 rose to $85.1 million, or $3.70 a share, from $351.7 million, or $3.39 a share, in the year-ago period. That beat the FactSet consensus for earnings per share of $3.67. Revenue grew 8.1% to $2.342 billion, compared with the FactSet consensus of $2.336 billion. Gross margin as a percentage of revenue improved to 48.7% from 47.5%, as energy expenses declined by about 0.50 percentage points. For the full fiscal year, the company lifted its guidance ranges for EPS to $14.00 to $14.45 from $13.85 to $14.35 and for revenue to $9.40 billion to $9.52 billion from $9.35 billion to $9.50 billion. Cintas shares have gained 11.9% year to date while the S&P 500 SPX has advanced 13.0%.

Thales Alenia Space produces the structure that acts like a chassis on a car providing the solid foundations for all other elements to be attached to and also absorbs the forces that the Artemis spacecraft will endure during launch into Earth orbit and onto the Moon.
Technicians assemble the primary structure that is made from a core of Composite Fibre Reinforced Polymer sandwich panels and aluminium alloy elements for the secondary structures. This technology keeps the European Service Module light enough to fly farther and longer but strong enough to keep its shape.
Thales Alenia Space also supplies the radiators for the European Service Modules that consist of six elements forming two independent systems. Like a car’s radiator system the European Service Module radiators are designed to expel excess heat and keep the computers and other components inside from overheating.
The structures are trucked from Turin to Bremen, Germany, where the rest of the hardware that makes a spacecraft can be installed. The first step in their voyage to the Moon.
