First Thing: Donald Trump committed fraud, New York judge rules in civil case
Wed, 27 Sep 2023 10:24:21 GMT
Judge refuses to dismiss lawsuit accusing former US president of inflating assets and net worth
Good morning.
Donald Trump committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame and the White House, a New York judge ruled yesterday in a strongly worded rejection of the former president’s bid to throw out a civil lawsuit against him.
What did Trump say? Alina Habba, Trump’s general counsel, described the Trump Organization as “an American success story” and called the judge’s ruling “fundamentally flawed”. She added that they intended to appeal immediately against the decision “because President Trump and his family, like every American business owner, is entitled to their day in court”.
When will TV and film production resume? Late-night and daytime television are expected to return to the air quickly. But most TV and film production cannot yet resume as the actors’ strike is still under way, and the strikes have already affected the production and release schedules for the coming months.

‘Lachlan Murdoch is a Hamlet figure’: Michael Wolff unpicks the real-life succession drama
Wed, 27 Sep 2023 09:00:54 GMT
The author has returned to the Murdoch empire for his latest book, after a bestselling trilogy on Trump. He discusses power, politics, the media and why a person can be a moron and a genius
Immediately before Michael Wolff published The Fall: The End of the Murdoch Empire, the emperor himself, driver of its expansion and its bitter divisions, stepped aside. Last week, Rupert Murdoch announced he was anointing his eldest son, Lachlan, as his successor, which per Wolff’s narrative will have been a bitter blow to everyone, including Lachlan.
Wolff’s latest book joins an oeuvre that is remarkable for its access: in 2008, he wrote a biography of Murdoch, The Man Who Owns the News, for which the mogul gave him 50 hours of interviews. Never mind that it’s the longest Murdoch has ever spoken to a journalist, it’s probably the longest he’s ever spoken to a friend. “We really got along. He’s inexhaustible on the subject of the media, and I, too, am inexhaustible on that subject. We had a very good time,” says Wolff. So long as they were doing business or gossip, that is. “He’s very hard to talk to personally; he can’t reflect on his own past and his own experience. He can talk about his family; he was weirdly transparent about his children. But about himself, what he might be feeling, no.”

It cemented the image of Trump as an assertive chief executive who had conquered New York, an image that still proves seductive to millions of voters who want him to run America like a business. But like much else about the 45th US president, it was all a lie.

Is it time to say goodbye to the binge watch?
Wed, 27 Sep 2023 10:00:02 GMT
With more streamers returning to the old fashioned week-by-week release of shows and those that don’t often paying the price, it might be the end for the all-at-once drop
Almost exactly two years ago, Netflix released Squid Game, the South Korean dystopian drama that temporarily took over social media. The Squid Game moment – and it was a moment, pervasive and fleeting – was an outsized version of the Netflix binge formula that, by late 2021 and especially after the mass couch event that was Covid, was so well-worn as to feel like clockwork. A show hits the streaming service all at once (in this case, nine episodes released worldwide on 17 September); it gains momentum online in memes, commentary and fan videos as part of an attention wildfire (142m households reportedly watched the show within a month); Netflix announces related projects building on the hype; the moment gives way to the next topic of the day and is consigned to the vast heap of viral internet history.
One could argue that Squid Game was the apotheosis and the denouement of the binge model – a massive phenomenon that, because it was available all at once, at people’s leisure, burned out quickly (see: Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and more). Since then, the model that defined its platform also seems headed for the dustbin; Netflix, which has very publicly faced subscriber and financial challenges in the past few years, is reportedly considering releasing Squid Game: The Challenge, the competition show spinoff of the series, in batches rather than all at once.

UK approval to develop Rosebank oilfield in North Sea condemned as ‘environmental vandalism’ – business live
Wed, 27 Sep 2023 11:50:48 GMT
Go-ahead for Equinor to develop largest oilfield in UK waters sparks outrage from green campaigners; energy secretary says ‘we must be pragmatic’
The secretary of state for Scotland, Alister Jack, said the North Sea has a “huge role to play” in safeguarding Britain’s energy security on its way to net zero.
It’s great news that the regulator has given Rosebank the green light. The North Sea has a huge role to play in ensuring the UK’s energy security while we transition to net zero. It’s really important that we maximise our domestic oil and gas reserves, which mean lower emissions than imports, while reducing any reliance on hostile states. Rosebank will play a big role in that, as well as growing our economy and providing skilled jobs in Scotland for generations to come.

Petrostate windfall tax would help poor countries in climate crisis, says Brown

Petrostates should pay a small percentage of their soaring oil and gas revenues to help poor countries cope with the climate crisis, the former UK prime minister Gordon Brown has urged.
Countries with large oil and gas deposits have enjoyed a record bonanza in the last two years, amounting to about $4tn (£3.3tn) last year for the industry globally. Levying a 3% windfall tax on the oil and gas export revenues of the biggest-producing countries would yield about $25bn a year.

Justin Trudeau’s accusation that India may be behind Sikh separatist killing puts western leaders in awkward position

London, Washington and Canberra have all been prioritising closer ties with New Delhi, seeing it not just as a strategic bulwark against the fast-rising China, but also as a partner in the economic isolation of Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

European Service Modules – made in Turin
Tue, 12 Sep 2023 15:09:00 +0200
Video:
00:02:30
Artemis in Europe: the structure and radiators for the European Service Modules that fly NASA’s Orion spacecraft to the Moon are built in Turin, Italy.
Thales Alenia Space produces the structure that acts like a chassis on a car providing the solid foundations for all other elements to be attached to and also absorbs the forces that the Artemis spacecraft will endure during launch into Earth orbit and onto the Moon.
Technicians assemble the primary structure that is made from a core of Composite Fibre Reinforced Polymer sandwich panels and aluminium alloy elements for the secondary structures. This technology keeps the European Service Module light enough to fly farther and longer but strong enough to keep its shape.
Thales Alenia Space also supplies the radiators for the European Service Modules that consist of six elements forming two independent systems. Like a car’s radiator system the European Service Module radiators are designed to expel excess heat and keep the computers and other components inside from overheating.
The structures are trucked from Turin to Bremen, Germany, where the rest of the hardware that makes a spacecraft can be installed. The first step in their voyage to the Moon.

Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq snap 3-session skid as stocks eke out gains

U.S. stocks finished modestly higher Wednesday, with all three major stock benchmarks ending a 3-session skid, as investors picked up shares after a sharp market selloff earlier this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose about 61 points, or 0.2%, ending near 32,970, while the S&P 500 index closed up 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 0.4%. Stocks booked modest gains as investors remained focused on the Federal Reserve's inflation fight and Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole, Wyo. symposium on Friday. Recession worries also were in focus, with pending homes sales falling in July, a sign that rate hikes have been helping cool demand, even through shelter costs, specifically rents, have contributed to high U.S. inflation. Benchmark lending climbed Wednesday, with the 10-year Treasury rate climbing to 3.105% Wednesday, the highest since June 28, according to Dow Jones Market Data based on 3 p.m. Eastern levels. The S&P 500's energy sector helped lead the way higher, up 1.2%, while financial rose 0.5%, according to FactSet
