Coronavirus live: China’s Sinopharm jab gets WHO approval; Turkey, Maldives and Nepal added to England ‘red list’
Fri, 07 May 2021 17:54:43 GMT

Grant Shapps says countries added to mandatory hotel quarantine list; Chinese vaccine is fifth to be approved by World Health Organization

Here is a recap of the main Covid updates from around the world:

China’s Sinopharm state company has offered substantial support for the Covax programme to provide Covid vaccines mainly to poor countries, a World Health Organization official has said.

As Reuters reports, senior WHO adviser Bruce Aylward said it would be up to Sinopharm to say how many doses of its vaccine it can provide to the programme, but added:

They are looking at trying to provide substantial support, make substantial doses available while at the same time of course trying to serve China’s population.

The Guardian view on secondhand clothes: the thrill of the old | Editorial
Fri, 07 May 2021 17:25:27 GMT

Big business is getting in on the act as sales of ‘preloved’ garments boom. But can the trend curb our love for fast fashion?

“Few articles change owners more frequently than clothes. They travel downwards from grade to grade in the social scale with remarkable regularity,” wrote the journalist Adolphe Smith in 1877 as he traced a garment’s journey: cleaned, repaired and resold repeatedly; eventually cut down into a smaller item; finally, when it was beyond all wearability, the fibres recycled into new fabric for the wealthier classes.

That model is almost incomprehensible in the era of fast fashion. The average British customer buys four items a month, often at pocket-money prices; though the low cost is a godsend for the hard-up, many purchases are discarded after a few outings, or never worn at all. Clothes Aid reports that 350,000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothing goes to landfill in the UK each year.

The Football Association is in talks with Uefa over relocating the Champions League final to England after Turkey was placed on the UK government’s travel red list.

Uefa had been expected to confirm details on Friday for the final on 29 May, with Manchester City and Chelsea fans expected to be allocated at least 4,000 tickets each for the match in Istanbul. That decision has been postponed pending negotiations, however, with English supporters told to stay at home by the UK government.

10 of the best places to visit in Portugal, chosen by readers
Fri, 07 May 2021 16:11:46 GMT

With Portugal announced as the only major destination on the green list on Friday, our tipsters choose their favourite natural parks, towns, beaches and seafood restaurants

If you want something out of the ordinary with fantastic scenery and fascinating history, then go to Terras de Bouro in the far north of the country. This town is well worth a visit because it offers the chance to walk along a Roman road complete with original milestones. The Via Geira was built to link Braga with Astorga, now in Spain. It is signposted within Terras de Bouro. The trail winds through woodland and round mountains with spectacular views, waterfalls and, of course, the milestones. It goes through the Peneda-Gerês national park to Portela de Homem on the Spanish border. It’s magical – .

The New South Wales premier, Gladys Berejiklian, has announced new restrictions for greater Sydney, including Wollongong, the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains, following two cases of local Covid transmission in Sydney’s east.

On Thursday the state’s chief health officer, Dr Kerry Chant, said laboratory testing had revealed the community case of a man in his 50s who returned a positive test on Wednesday matched a case who travelled to the state from the US and quarantined at the Park Royal at Darling Harbour, before being moved to Sydney Health Accommodation on 28 April.

: Expedia stock surges as results top Street view
Thu, 06 May 2021 20:18:00 GMT

Expedia Group Inc. EXPE shares rallied in the extended session Thursday after the online travel company’s results came in better than expected. Expedia shares jumped 5% after hours, following a 3.6% decline in the regular session to close at $164.82. The company reported a first-quarter loss of $606 million, or $4.17 a share, compared with $1.3 billion, or $9.24 a share, in the year-ago period. The adjusted loss, which exclude stock-based compensation expenses and other items, was $2.02 a share, compared with $1.83 a share in the year-ago period. Revenue fell to $1.25 billion from $2.21 billion in the year-ago quarter. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast a loss of $2.30 a share on revenue of $1.11 billion. “Travel remains a study in contrasts – with strong vacation rental growth and demand for domestic travel continuing to drive us forward, while demand for international and business travel and conventional lodging remain challenged,” said Expedia Chief Executive Peter Kern in a statement. “As the vaccine rollout continues, we expect to see a now familiar story play out; domestic and leisure demand lead the recovery. However, as the dire situation in India reminds us, in some markets, things may get worse before they get better.”

Mission Alpha liftoff
Fri, 23 Apr 2021 12:00:00 +0200
Video: 00:04:13

Liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft with ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, NASA astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough, and Japanese astronaut Aki Hoshide. The Crew-2 spend around 24 hours travelling to the International Space Station. The rocket lifted off at 11:49 on 23 April 2021 from Launchpad 39A in Cape Canaveral at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.

Thomas is the first ESA astronaut to fly in space in a vehicle other than the Russian Soyuz or the US Space Shuttle, and the first ESA astronaut to leave Earth from Florida, USA, in over a decade. This is his second flight, his first mission called Proxima saw Thomas fly to the Space Station on a Soyuz from Baikonur in Kazakhstan and his Expedition broke records for amount of hours spent on research at the time.

Thomas’ second mission to the International Space Station is called Alpha. This is after Alpha Centauri, the closest stellar system to Earth, following the French tradition to name space missions after stars or constellations.

Over 200 experiments are planned during Thomas’s time in space, with 40 European ones and 12 new experiments led by France’s space agency CNES.

How space science is combating climate change
Mon, 19 Apr 2021 11:16:00 +0200
Thunderstorm seen from Space Station

If you have been following International Space Station news, you know that hundreds of scientific experiments are performed in low-Earth orbit and the pace is only increasing. This is great news for scientists, especially those that have been preparing for years to send their experiment to the orbital outpost, but what does it mean for people on Earth?

If you are not into plasma nanoparticles, subjective time measurement in microgravity or traveling to Mars in the future, what benefit does space science have for you?

Potentially a lot. Experiments performed on the International Space Station could in fact help save our planet. All one needs to do is look beyond the initial outcomes and ask: "How can this information be useful in other areas?"

Biden says ‘We still have a long way to go’ after disheartening jobs report – live
Fri, 07 May 2021 17:55:13 GMT
  • Biden insists country is ‘moving in the direction’ despite poor numbers
  • Republicans look to oust Cheney as Trump allies push election lie

Texas has become the latest Republican-dominated state to advance sweeping new limits on voting, despite no evidence of any problems with last year’s vote and a coalition of state and federal officials calling the 2020 presidential election the most secure in history.

Readers, we have a staff report coming from Texas shortly and please definitely look out for more special Guardian news-features on these issues next week, in the continuation of our series called The Fight to Vote. But for a quick report, here’s something from The Associated Press on Texas latest:

The key vote at 3 a.m. Friday in the Texas House followed hours of debate that started the day before, with lawmakers now negotiating the final version of the legislation that will need approval before heading to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who has broadly defended the measures.

From Florida to Georgia, Iowa and now Texas, Republican lawmakers have used unsubstantiated claims by former President Donald Trump and his allies to justify new voting restrictions.

The Democratic National Committee has commented on today’s report on April jobs, which issued statistics that disappointed expectations.

Unsurprisingly, Democrats are taking a glass-half-full approach while also encouraging Congress to work even harder to pass Joe Biden’s legislation on infrastructure and families that will boost employment and the economy.

Proud of you my friend!!! @KeishaBottoms Thank you for all that you have done for the great city of Atlanta! https://t.co/wlJFa2Qo9W

In trouble from top to bottom: chaotic Arsenal are failing in all areas | Nick Ames
Fri, 07 May 2021 14:54:24 GMT

From the Kroenkes to the technical director, from Arteta to his squad, nobody is standing out as a high performer

Eleven hours and very possibly a sleepless night after the worst moment of his managerial career, Mikel Arteta was asked to rake back over the debris. Arsenal have been condemned to a year in the shadows and he was left to discuss why things have gone so badly wrong after, in his words, “investing every drop of energy emotionally” in a project whose credibility is teetering on the edge. “So far it has not been enough and this is when the question mark comes: why is it not enough?” Arteta said. “Is it just a thing? Is it the manager? Is it other stuff? What is it?”

Anybody capable of boiling that down to a single factor could probably earn themselves a pretty enough penny to help Daniel Ek force his bid to unseat the Kroenkes over the line. The problem is that, while fingers will flail everywhere in search of an answer to Arsenal’s decline, it is nigh on impossible to settle on a panacea. Arteta has by all measures that matter failed this season, but anyone believing their fortunes can be reversed by trading one piece of the puzzle would overlook the doubts coursing from top to bottom.

Identifying the Person Behind Bitcoin Fog
2021-05-03T14:36:33Z

The person behind the Bitcoin Fog was identified and arrested. Bitcoin Fog was an anonymization service: for a fee, it mixed a bunch of people’s bitcoins up so that it was hard to figure out where any individual coins came from. It ran for ten years.

Identifying the person behind Bitcoin Fog serves as an illustrative example of how hard it is to be anonymous online in the face of a competent police investigation:

Most remarkable, however, is the IRS’s account of tracking down Sterlingov using the very same sort of blockchain analysis that his own service was meant to defeat. The complaint outlines how Sterlingov allegedly paid for the server hosting of Bitcoin Fog at one point in 2011 using the now-defunct digital currency Liberty Reserve. It goes on to show the blockchain evidence that identifies Sterlingov’s purchase of that Liberty Reserve currency with bitcoins: He first exchanged euros for the bitcoins on the early cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox, then moved those bitcoins through several subsequent addresses, and finally traded them on another currency exchange for the Liberty Reserve funds he’d use to set up Bitcoin Fog’s domain...

Dragon fire
Thu, 29 Apr 2021 16:21:00 +0200
Image:

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Crew Dragon spits fire as it lifts off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, 23 April at 05:49 local time. On board are ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, NASA astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough, and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide.

The crew of four spent around 23 hours orbiting Earth and catching up with the International Space Station after their launch before docking to the Node-2 Harmony module, marking the start of ESA’s six-month mission Alpha.

Thomas is the first European to be launched to space on a US spacecraft in over a decade. The new Crew Dragon ships four astronauts at a time, allowing more people to live and work on the International Space Station doing more research for scientists on Earth.

Alpha is Thomas’ second space mission, and everything is set to be bigger and brighter. A Russian laboratory module, scheduled to arrive in the summer with a European robotic arm, will offer more ways of maintaining the International Space Station and supporting spacewalkers as they work outside. Thomas will help set up this arm and prepare it for use during the Alpha mission.

Over 200 international experiments are planned during Thomas’ time in space. Of the 40 European ones, 12 are new experiments led by the French space agency CNES.

At the end of the Alpha mission in October, Thomas will take over commander of the International Space Station for a brief period and welcome ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer on his first flight to space.

Latest updates on the Alpha mission can be found on Twitter @esaspaceflight, with more details on ESA’s exploration blog via thomaspesquet.esa.int.

Red, white and green: three ways we can make wine more sustainable
Mon, 29 Mar 2021 16:39:17 GMT

From how it’s grown to where it’s shipped, via waste, water and what packaging it’s sold in, a lot of factors impact how environmentally friendly the wine we drink really is

For many of us, the question “how green is my wine?” won’t go much further than the colour of the bottle. Wine is a natural product, after all, and vines must surely absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis? The reality is rather more complicated, but raising your glass doesn’t have to give the planet a hangover.

Intensive agriculture, crop spraying and the creation of vineyard monocultures are all potential issues before grapes get anywhere near a bottle. Then there’s the use of water and energy in the winery, what to do with the waste it generates and, of course, the carbon footprint created by packaging and then moving the finished product, often to the other side of the world.

So who are you again? Boris Johnson meets the new MP for Hartlepool
Fri, 07 May 2021 17:00:01 GMT

PM tried not to gloat at Jill Mortimer’s win, claiming no knowledge of Brexit party demise, vaccine bounce ... and even his new MP

The real surprise was that anyone was surprised. Over the last few days the polls had looked desperate for Labour and it would have been astonishing if the Conservatives hadn’t easily won the Hartlepool byelection.

And sure enough those who had voted for the Brexit party in the 2019 general election moved en masse to the Tories and Hartlepool went blue for the first time since the constituency had been created back in the mid-1970s. So what with the end of the Brexit party and the vaccine bounce, the byelection had been an accident waiting to happen for Labour.

Covid rips through rural India’s threadbare healthcare system
Fri, 07 May 2021 16:57:15 GMT

The pandemic overwhelming the big cities is reaching areas of Bihar where there is one doctor for 40,000 people

In the small rural village of Kathail, in the east of India’s poorest state, Bihar, access to healthcare has always been scarce. But when 34-year-old Umakant Singh fell sick with a cough and fever last week, his brother Mantu Singh did all he could to find help.

For four days Mantu rushed around, collecting the limited medicines he could find for his younger brother and nursing him at home. But he knew what these symptoms meant: Covid-19 had reached their village.

To win back working people, Labour should learn from Joe Biden | Jonathan Freedland
Fri, 07 May 2021 16:09:21 GMT

The US president has found the one thing divided parties of the left can agree on

A realignment is under way in British politics, and it is killing Labour. The Tories’ crushing win in Hartlepool, along with gains in English council seats that were once painted deepest red, is proof that Boris Johnson’s 2019 victory was no one-off, no aberration. Put simply, working people in towns across England that once saw voting Labour as a defining part of their identity are now voting Conservative – and they are doing so in big numbers.

An overused word, but the threat to Labour is existential. It cannot win and therefore cannot survive as a potential party of government by relying solely on those who are young, live in a city, have a university degree or are from an ethnic minority: there are just not enough of them. Labour needs the votes of the many millions of others still broadly defined as working class. The clue is in the party’s name. And yet look at Labour’s membership: 77% of them in social category ABC1, concentrated heavily in London and the south. One Labour MP says candidly: “There is a canyon between us and the working class.”

"The company is committed to cooperating fully with the Staff of the Division of Enforcement" investigation as well as the Southern District of New York's ongoing investigation, it said. Nikola "has made voluminous productions of information and made witnesses available for interviews" and will continue to comply with the requests, it said. Anne Boleyn comes to Channel 5 as thriller told through queen’s eyes
Fri, 07 May 2021 15:39:19 GMT

Jodie Turner-Smith plays regal yet steely Boleyn with casting director taking ‘identity conscious’ approach

Cultural imaginings of Anne Boleyn – beginning for most with the primary school refrain of “divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived” – often view the 16th-century monarch solely through her husband, Henry VIII, and the grisly end she met as wife number two.

It is a trend that Channel 5’s upcoming drama is looking to subvert. The three-part series – a psychological thriller counting down the panic-filled and cloistered final months of Boleyn’s life – airs later this month, seen largely through the eyes of Boleyn herself. Created by the female-focused company Fable, the makers of the Bafta-winning east London-set film Rocks, the series aims to reset our understanding of Boleyn as a strong female figure fighting miscarriage and claims of adultery, rather than a maligned cliche of a temptress and a cheat.

FDA advisory committee votes 10-8 in favor of ChemoCentryx's experimental drug; stock is down
Fri, 07 May 2021 14:14:59 GMT

Shares of ChemoCentryx Inc. tumbled 61.7% in trading on Friday, the day after a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee voted 10-8 that the benefits of the company's experimental autoimmune drug, avacopan, outweigh the risks. The mixed response from committee members followed critical words from the FDA earlier this week that had sent ChemoCentryx's stock diving. The company's stock this week was downgraded by Raymond James and Stifel Nicolaus, among others. Raymond James analyst Steven Seedhouse told investors that while he downgraded the stock to outperform, from strong buy, he still predicts a FDA approval by July 7 and a future blockbuster in avacopan, which is being evaluated as a treatment for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic auto-antibody-associated vasculitis. "We're actually not changing our unadjusted avacopan estimates (~$1.9B peak unadjusted U.S. sales), only our probability of success (now at 50% vs. 100% prior)," he wrote. "Yes, we're calling this a pure coin flip between now and July 7." ChemoCentryx's stock is down 54.4% for the year, while the broader S&P 500 is up 11.8%.

I thought I’d quit my trainer addiction – then along came some Yeezy slides
Fri, 07 May 2021 13:00:35 GMT

I got an email saying I could enter a raffle where the prize is spending a load of money on something I had not intention of buying previously

The trainer market has never been more vibrant, and by vibrant I mean that I am buying pairs at ridiculous prices all the time. You can’t even buy the really popular ones from the shops any more. You either buy them from someone with the necessarily ludicrous commitment to get them for way above retail price, or you enter a raffle. I think we can agree that consumerism has gone too far when your prize for winning a competition is that you get to pay for some overpriced shoes.

Nevertheless, I am completely in, and flirting dangerously with becoming a “hypebeast” (somebody who is obsessed with getting the most talked-about, rarest trainers). Rather than admiring the hypebeast in her household, my wife has suggested that my age and appearance mean that I often look like a middle-aged man who has borrowed his teenage son’s shoes – but she’s just a hater.

Hurray, I can meet people! Now, when can I get some alone time? | Coco Khan

Could it be that I, a committed extrovert who talks to strangers, had become an introvert during the pandemic?

To quote James Brown: I feel good, I knew that I would. Britain has opened up. Into a restaurant I leap, on to a beautician’s bed I spring, and into a shop I hop, to try on sunglasses and flirt with the salesperson, who is almost certainly reciprocating for money. Still, in-person interaction with strangers! These days I skip home.

But recently one evening I found myself alone, properly alone, for the first time in a while. No one in the flat, and no obligation to join a Zoom, or go out to care for someone – everyone I love was busy and catered for in this new world. And it was lovely.

Pfizer Inc. and German partner BioNTech SE said Friday they have initiated rolling submission of a Biologics License Application (BLA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for full approval of their COVID-19 vaccine in individuals 16 years of age and older. The vaccine was already granted emergency use authorization last December, a measure used by the FDA in emergency situations. "Data to support the BLA will be submitted by the Companies to the FDA on a rolling basis over the coming weeks, with a request for Priority Review," the companies said in a joint statement. Since the vaccine was granted an EUA on Dec. 11, the companies have delivered more than 170 million doses across the U.S. Pfizer and BioNTech has also submitted an application to expand the EUA to include individuals aged 12-to-15 years-old, and plan to submit a supplemental BLA to support licensure of the vaccine in that age group once the required 6 months of data after a second dose are available. Pfizer shares rose 0.6% premarket, while BioNTech shares rose 4.3%. Those shares have climbed 106% in the year to date, while the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF has fallen 11% and the S&P 500 has gained 11.9%.

Cinemark stock gains after loss widens more than expected but revenue beats forecasts
Fri, 07 May 2021 10:43:08 GMT

Shares of Cinemark Holdings Inc. climbed 0.8% in premarket trading Friday, after the movie theater operator reported a wider-than-expected first-quarter loss but revenue that fell less than expected, as admissions and concessions revenue both topped forecasts. The net loss widened to $208.2 million, or $1.75 a share, from $59.6 million, or 51 cents a share in the year-ago period. The FactSet consensus for net per-share losses was $1.44. Total revenue dropped 79% to $114.4 million, but beat the FactSet consensus of $92.6 million. Admissions revenue fell 80.8% to $56.1 million, but topped expectations of $45.8 million, while concessions revenue declined 79.3% to $39.5 million to beat expectations of $28.9 million. "We are highly optimistic about theatrical exhibition's resurgence in the U.S. over the coming months on account of a range of factors, including the rapid pace of the vaccine rollout, improving consumer sentiment about returning to movie theaters, recent box office successes and confirmation of consistent product supply," said Chief Executive Mark Zoradi. The company said its screen count was 5,872 as of March 31, and it had commitments to open six new theaters with 72 screens this year, and 13 new theaters with 123 screens after 2021. The stock has advanced 17.7% year to date through Thursday, while the S&P 500 has gained 11.9%.

Fenn, London SW6: ‘An elegant, date night kind of place’ – restaurant review | Grace Dent on restaurants
Fri, 07 May 2021 09:00:40 GMT

A bijou Fulham restaurant with a stylish setting and an imaginative, modern European menu

En route to Fenn in Fulham, I comforted myself that this may, please God, be one of the last restaurants I’ll visit during the alfresco period. We were ever so grateful when outdoor dining restored a semblance of semi-normality, but let’s be very honest, not one sane soul will pine for this season of swamped booking systems and damp bum cheeks.

I’ve accepted 3.45pm dinner bookings to eat under dripping tarpaulin, I’ve wangled my way into limited-menu brunches in repurposed loading bays and I’ve eaten pommes boulangère while dressed like Hagrid, with harsh, unforgiving daylight exposing the map of fine lines on my forehead, which I’d much prefer to hide in a flatteringly lit banquette.

Cuba during the pandemic – photo essay
Fri, 07 May 2021 06:00:29 GMT

Photographer Leysis Quesada Vera describes life during the pandemic in Havana’s Los Sitios neighbourhood. Her work is supported and produced by the Magnum Foundation, with a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. Magnum Foundation is a nonprofit organisation that expands creativity and diversity in documentary photography. Through grant making and mentorship, Magnum Foundation supports a global network of social justice and human rights-focused photographers and experiments with new models for storytelling

Los Sitios lies to the south of Centro, the careworn barrio that gives Havana its coarse voice and whose northern limit is the Malecon, the famous corniche set against the Florida Straits.

The photographer Leysis Quesada Vera describes Los Sitios – her neighbourhood – as home to “people who work with tourists but not in the hotels. They sell cigars, probably illegally, clean the houses where tourists stay, sell souvenirs.”

Fed's Bostic says too soon to be tapering asset purchases or for FOMC debate on issue
Thu, 06 May 2021 19:02:00 GMT

Atlanta Federal Reserve President Raphael Bostic on Thursday said it was too soon to be scaling back asset purchases or having the Fed's interest-rate committee formally discuss the issue at their next meeting in mid-June. In recent days, Dallas Fed President Rob Kaplan has called for a formal discussion of tapering of the Fed's $120 billion of asset purchases, but many other Fed officials have said such a conversation would be premature. "There is a lot of healing that would need to happen before I would want to start to be thinking about us having made substantial progress," which is the benchmark the Fed set for tapering, Bostic said, in comments to reporters after a speech at a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau conference. Bostic said each of the 18 top Fed officials are still making up their own minds about when to taper. "Right now, I'm not sure I am at a place where I would be wanting to force that conversation at a committee level," he said.

Security Vulnerabilities in Cellebrite
2021-04-27T11:57:14Z

Moxie Marlinspike has an intriguing blog post about Cellebrite, a tool used by police and others to break into smartphones. Moxie got his hands on one of the devices, which seems to be a pair of Windows software packages and a whole lot of connecting cables.

According to Moxie, the software is riddled with vulnerabilities. (The one example he gives is that it uses FFmpeg DLLs from 2012, and have not been patched with the 100+ security updates since then.)

…we found that it’s possible to execute arbitrary code on a Cellebrite machine simply by including a specially formatted but otherwise innocuous file in any app on a device that is subsequently plugged into Cellebrite and scanned. There are virtually no limits on the code that can be executed...
