UK Covid news: Boris Johnson cancels trip to India because of Covid crisis there
Mon, 19 Apr 2021 08:51:42 GMT

Latest updates: PM’s forthcoming trip to India cancelled as country’s total cases reach 15m

Boris Johnson has cancelled his planned trip to India. No 10 has just released this joint statement from the British and Indian governments.

In the light of the current coronavirus situation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not be able to travel to India next week. Instead, Prime Ministers Modi and Johnson will speak later this month to agree and launch their ambitious plans for the future partnership between the UK and India. They will remain in regular contact beyond this, and look forward to meeting in person later this year.

As my colleague Nicola Davis reported last week, only 77 cases of the Indian variant of coronavirus, B1617, have been found in the UK so far. “It is designated a ‘variant under investigation’ but is worrying researchers as it contains two mutations that it is thought may help the virus to evade the body’s immune responses,” Nicola explained.

This morning Prof Danny Altmann, professor of immunology at Imperial College London, said he expected B1617 to be upgraded to a “variant of concern” quite soon. That would lead to India being placed on the “red list” for travel, he said (which would probably force Boris Johnson to cancel his trip due to start this weekend). Altmann told Good Morning Britain:

At the moment, this particular variant (from India) is called a variant under investigation, not a variant of concern because it hasn’t been escalated to that level yet.

My assumption from everything I’ve seen is that it will become a variant of concern. When it becomes a variant of concern, I’d be quite surprised if India wasn’t on the red list.

This variant has a couple of mutations that are among those that we think are important that should be watched carefully, but they’re actually probably not at the very kind of top tier of mutations, for example in the B117 - or Kent variant - or the South African variant, that generate the most concern.

And in terms of spread, clearly this variant has increased in frequency in India around the same time as their very large and tragic recent wave.

Leaders agree to vaccination rollout changes – as it happened
Mon, 19 Apr 2021 08:15:10 GMT

Fourth Perth hospital health worker goes into self-quarantine while scammers target people seeking vaccines. This blog is now closed

That is where we will leave the live blog for Monday. Thanks for following along. Here’s what we learned today:

The PM’s office has just released the statement out of the national cabinet meeting tonight. This is the bit on what was agreed to:

National cabinet agreed in-principle to a series of changes to the Australian Covid-19 vaccination strategy that will be put forward for approval at the next meeting of national cabinet, including options to bring forward the commencement of vaccinations for over-50-year-olds under the Australian Covid-19 vaccination strategy priority group 2A, and the readiness of more state- and territory-operated vaccination sites, including mass vaccination sites, as vaccine supplies increase.

National cabinet reinforced that general practice will continue to be the primary model of rolling out vaccinations for Australians over 50 years of age, with states and territories to consider options to supplement rollout through expanded state vaccination centres.

‘Respect the water’: RNLI lifeguard training in Cornwall
Mon, 19 Apr 2021 06:00:25 GMT

Ahead of a busy summer of domestic tourism in the UK, qualified lifeguards and trainees rehearse life-saving procedures

From a distance the ocean looks calm – safe, even – but a sticker peeling from a window in St Agnes lifeguard station offers a cautionary warning to all visitors: Respect the Water, it says.

The summer ahead promises to be busier than ever in Cornwall, with a boom in domestic tourism fuelled by global coronavirus restrictions. This beautiful but unforgiving stretch of coastline will see its fair share of rescues.

The RNLI is training new lifeguards in preparation. Today, a group of five are learning first aid skills and rehearsing water rescue techniques using tubes and rescue boards – they must wear PPE for close proximity drills, even in the water. The trainees range in age from 16 to 33 and include students, a gas engineer, a marine biologist and a former champion surfer.

My alternative summer: travel writers’ plans for an epic UK adventure
Mon, 19 Apr 2021 05:30:23 GMT

With journeys to distant corners of the globe still on hold, our writers are gearing up to hike, climb, camp, and swim on home turf

When we were kids it was always UK holidays, usually under canvas, and always recalled with affection. I have no problem giving up foreign travel for a while, although I do miss the sheer scale and biodiversity of distant wildernesses and worry about the communities who invested hope, and effort, in tourism as a way of holding off the oilmen, gold prospectors and road diggers. I’m praying they hang on. We will return!

Skepticism and a shrug: Cubans greet the end of 62 years of Castro rule

News travels swiftly through Havana, bumping against people so they turn, then rolling on. Cubans have a phrase for it: la bola en la calle, the ball in the street.

Raúl Castro’s announcement on Friday that he is to retire and bring 62 years of Castro rule on the island to a close caused barely a ripple, even if it sent waves around the world.

Astronaut selection: tips from Thomas
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 16:30:00 +0200
Video: 00:02:18

In 2008, Thomas Pesquet applied to become an ESA astronaut. On 22 April 2021, he will fly his second mission to the International Space Station. In this video Thomas shares how he found his way to space, and encourages viewers to follow their passions as ESA seeks its next class of astronauts.

Nobody is perfect on their first attempt at a task, but Thomas says the only way to improve is to try and keep trying. Though becoming an astronaut seemed a distant dream when he was younger, by continuing to challenge himself and learn along the way he developed the skills he needed to put himself forward and become one of a small group who have travelled to space.

Whatever your passion, his advice is universal: try your best, and if you don’t succeed it doesn’t matter. What does matter is perseverance.

The race for rare earth minerals: can Australia fuel the electric vehicle revolution?
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 20:00:15 GMT

China dominates supply of the elusive metals, which are vital to modern technology, but finding new sources is becoming a global priority

There are an estimated 1.4bn cars on the world’s roads today. Around 78m new cars are sold every year. To head off the worst effects of climate change, every single one will need to go electric eventually.

Whether it rolls off a production line in Fremont, California, or comes together in a vast megafactory in Qinghai, China, a colossal amount of human effort must go into building the components and obtaining their base minerals. In each car, for instance, there is roughly a kilogram of magnet providing the motion needed to fire engines and electrify windows. Roughly 30% of this material is made up of rare earth material known as neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr).

Furthermore, that candidate will have a realistic chance of filling the top job in German politics by the end of the year.

CNIO researchers explain the toxicity of USP7 inhibitors, under development for cancer treatment
Fri, 16 Apr 2021 00:00:00 EDT
(Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO)) The researchers have discovered that USP7 inhibitors -under development by several pharmaceutical companies for the treatment of cancer- trigger a premature activation of cell cycle proteins, leading to uncontrolled cancer cell division and death.* The paper rejects the premise that the therapeutic efficacy of these inhibitors is due to their effects on activating the tumor suppressor protein P53, as currently accepted by the international scientific community. These results extend the potential use of USP7 inhibitors to a wider range of patients.
