Coronavirus live: China’s Sinopharm jab gets WHO approval; Turkey, Maldives and Nepal added to England ‘red list’
Fri, 07 May 2021 17:54:43 GMT

Grant Shapps says countries added to mandatory hotel quarantine list; Chinese vaccine is fifth to be approved by World Health Organization

Here is a recap of the main Covid updates from around the world:

China’s Sinopharm state company has offered substantial support for the Covax programme to provide Covid vaccines mainly to poor countries, a World Health Organization official has said.

As Reuters reports, senior WHO adviser Bruce Aylward said it would be up to Sinopharm to say how many doses of its vaccine it can provide to the programme, but added:

They are looking at trying to provide substantial support, make substantial doses available while at the same time of course trying to serve China’s population.

The Guardian view on secondhand clothes: the thrill of the old | Editorial
Fri, 07 May 2021 17:25:27 GMT

Big business is getting in on the act as sales of ‘preloved’ garments boom. But can the trend curb our love for fast fashion?

“Few articles change owners more frequently than clothes. They travel downwards from grade to grade in the social scale with remarkable regularity,” wrote the journalist Adolphe Smith in 1877 as he traced a garment’s journey: cleaned, repaired and resold repeatedly; eventually cut down into a smaller item; finally, when it was beyond all wearability, the fibres recycled into new fabric for the wealthier classes.

That model is almost incomprehensible in the era of fast fashion. The average British customer buys four items a month, often at pocket-money prices; though the low cost is a godsend for the hard-up, many purchases are discarded after a few outings, or never worn at all. Clothes Aid reports that 350,000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothing goes to landfill in the UK each year.

  • FA in talks with Uefa over bringing final to England

The Football Association is in talks with Uefa over relocating the Champions League final to England after Turkey was placed on the UK government’s travel red list.

Uefa had been expected to confirm details on Friday for the final on 29 May, with Manchester City and Chelsea fans expected to be allocated at least 4,000 tickets each for the match in Istanbul. That decision has been postponed pending negotiations, however, with English supporters told to stay at home by the UK government.

10 of the best places to visit in Portugal, chosen by readers
Fri, 07 May 2021 16:11:46 GMT

With Portugal announced as the only major destination on the green list on Friday, our tipsters choose their favourite natural parks, towns, beaches and seafood restaurants

If you want something out of the ordinary with fantastic scenery and fascinating history, then go to Terras de Bouro in the far north of the country. This town is well worth a visit because it offers the chance to walk along a Roman road complete with original milestones. The Via Geira was built to link Braga with Astorga, now in Spain. It is signposted within Terras de Bouro. The trail winds through woodland and round mountains with spectacular views, waterfalls and, of course, the milestones. It goes through the Peneda-Gerês national park to Portela de Homem on the Spanish border. It’s magical – .

Fri, 07 May 2021 12:14:03 GMT

The New South Wales premier, Gladys Berejiklian, has announced new restrictions for greater Sydney, including Wollongong, the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains, following two cases of local Covid transmission in Sydney’s east.

On Thursday the state’s chief health officer, Dr Kerry Chant, said laboratory testing had revealed the community case of a man in his 50s who returned a positive test on Wednesday matched a case who travelled to the state from the US and quarantined at the Park Royal at Darling Harbour, before being moved to Sydney Health Accommodation on 28 April.

: Expedia stock surges as results top Street view
Thu, 06 May 2021 20:18:00 GMT

Expedia Group Inc. EXPE shares rallied in the extended session Thursday after the online travel company’s results came in better than expected. Expedia shares jumped 5% after hours, following a 3.6% decline in the regular session to close at $164.82. The company reported a first-quarter loss of $606 million, or $4.17 a share, compared with $1.3 billion, or $9.24 a share, in the year-ago period. The adjusted loss, which exclude stock-based compensation expenses and other items, was $2.02 a share, compared with $1.83 a share in the year-ago period. Revenue fell to $1.25 billion from $2.21 billion in the year-ago quarter. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast a loss of $2.30 a share on revenue of $1.11 billion. “Travel remains a study in contrasts – with strong vacation rental growth and demand for domestic travel continuing to drive us forward, while demand for international and business travel and conventional lodging remain challenged,” said Expedia Chief Executive Peter Kern in a statement. “As the vaccine rollout continues, we expect to see a now familiar story play out; domestic and leisure demand lead the recovery. However, as the dire situation in India reminds us, in some markets, things may get worse before they get better.”

Mission Alpha liftoff
Fri, 23 Apr 2021 12:00:00 +0200
Video: 00:04:13

Liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft with ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, NASA astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough, and Japanese astronaut Aki Hoshide. The Crew-2 spend around 24 hours travelling to the International Space Station. The rocket lifted off at 11:49 on 23 April 2021 from Launchpad 39A in Cape Canaveral at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.

Thomas is the first ESA astronaut to fly in space in a vehicle other than the Russian Soyuz or the US Space Shuttle, and the first ESA astronaut to leave Earth from Florida, USA, in over a decade. This is his second flight, his first mission called Proxima saw Thomas fly to the Space Station on a Soyuz from Baikonur in Kazakhstan and his Expedition broke records for amount of hours spent on research at the time.

Thomas’ second mission to the International Space Station is called Alpha. This is after Alpha Centauri, the closest stellar system to Earth, following the French tradition to name space missions after stars or constellations.

Over 200 experiments are planned during Thomas’s time in space, with 40 European ones and 12 new experiments led by France’s space agency CNES.

How space science is combating climate change
Mon, 19 Apr 2021 11:16:00 +0200
Thunderstorm seen from Space Station

If you have been following International Space Station news, you know that hundreds of scientific experiments are performed in low-Earth orbit and the pace is only increasing. This is great news for scientists, especially those that have been preparing for years to send their experiment to the orbital outpost, but what does it mean for people on Earth?

If you are not into plasma nanoparticles, subjective time measurement in microgravity or traveling to Mars in the future, what benefit does space science have for you?

Potentially a lot. Experiments performed on the International Space Station could in fact help save our planet. All one needs to do is look beyond the initial outcomes and ask: "How can this information be useful in other areas?"
