10 of the best places to visit in Portugal, chosen by readers
Fri, 07 May 2021 16:11:46 GMT

With Portugal announced as the only major destination on the green list on Friday, our tipsters choose their favourite natural parks, towns, beaches and seafood restaurants

If you want something out of the ordinary with fantastic scenery and fascinating history, then go to Terras de Bouro in the far north of the country. This town is well worth a visit because it offers the chance to walk along a Roman road complete with original milestones. The Via Geira was built to link Braga with Astorga, now in Spain. It is signposted within Terras de Bouro. The trail winds through woodland and round mountains with spectacular views, waterfalls and, of course, the milestones. It goes through the Peneda-Gerês national park to Portela de Homem on the Spanish border. It’s magical – .

Saffron gang accused of passing off Iranian spice as prized Spanish variety
Fri, 07 May 2021 10:41:23 GMT

Arrests in Spain follow two-year investigation prompted by big increase in Iranian saffron imports

Police and customs officers in Spain have arrested 17 people and seized half a tonne of saffron after breaking up a gang that allegedly imported the spice from Iran, bulked it out and sold it as a much-prized Spanish variety.

The arrests came at the end of a two-year investigation that began when officers noticed that companies in and around Ciudad Real, 180km (112 miles) south of Madrid, were importing large quantities of Iranian saffron. Once in Spain, the spice was processed, dyed, packaged and branded as saffron from La Mancha, which has protected designation of origin status.

French president says US and UK should start exporting doses around the world instead

Emmanuel Macron has echoed the German government’s concerns over Joe Biden’s proposed suspension of intellectual property rights for Covid-19 vaccines as he urged the US and the UK to instead start exporting doses around the world.

Arriving at an EU summit in Porto in Portugal, the French president expressed his reservations about the White House proposal to waive patents and criticised the lack of exports coming from “Anglo-Saxon” countries.

Libyan coastguard boat that shot Italian fisher was provided by Rome
Fri, 07 May 2021 12:17:34 GMT

Italian government supplied vessel to help Tripoli control flow of migrants in Mediterranean

An Italian fisher wounded when his trawler was machined-gunned by the Libyan coastguard was fired on from a boat supplied by Italy’s government to help Tripoli control the flow of migrants.

Libyan authorities, who say the coastguard vessel fired warning shots into the air, said three Italian fishing vessels had entered Libyan territorial waters without authorisation before the incident on Thursday, the latest episode in a territorial dispute involving crews from the Sicilian port of Mazara del Vallo who fish for red prawns off the Libyan coast.

Germany to bring forward climate goals after constitutional court ruling
Thu, 06 May 2021 11:48:25 GMT

Government proposes net zero deadline of 2045 instead of 2050, but critics demand actions not numbers

Germany’s government is to revise its emission reduction targets after the country’s constitutional court declared the current climate protection measures insufficient, aiming to become greenhouse gas neutral by 2045 rather than 2050.

The finance minister, Olaf Scholz, and the environment minister, Svenja Schulze, laid out a legislative proposal on Wednesday to cut emissions by 65% from 1990 levels by 2030. An 88% reduction of carbon emissions is to be reached by 2040.

So who are you again? Boris Johnson meets the new MP for Hartlepool
Fri, 07 May 2021 17:00:01 GMT

PM tried not to gloat at Jill Mortimer’s win, claiming no knowledge of Brexit party demise, vaccine bounce ... and even his new MP

The real surprise was that anyone was surprised. Over the last few days the polls had looked desperate for Labour and it would have been astonishing if the Conservatives hadn’t easily won the Hartlepool byelection.

And sure enough those who had voted for the Brexit party in the 2019 general election moved en masse to the Tories and Hartlepool went blue for the first time since the constituency had been created back in the mid-1970s. So what with the end of the Brexit party and the vaccine bounce, the byelection had been an accident waiting to happen for Labour.

‘We’re piggy in the middle’: Brexit has made life impossible, say Jersey fishers
Fri, 07 May 2021 13:10:49 GMT

Their families have been fishing here for decades but despite promises of frictionless trade, the market for their fish is disappearing

Steph Noel, who has been fishing the waters off Jersey for almost four decades, could not see the point of chugging out to sea in his 8.5-metre boat, Belle Bird, this weekend.

“There’s no value in it for me,” he said. “It’ll cost me in bait and diesel but even if I have a good day there’s no market there for what I bring back.”

The Jersey fishing standoff shows Brexit has only just begun | Marley Morris
Fri, 07 May 2021 12:03:39 GMT

Ultimately, Britain will need to find a way to cooperate with its closest neighbours without resorting to gunboat diplomacy

When the UK and the EU finalised their trade deal last December, you could be forgiven for assuming that Boris Johnson had fulfilled his pledge to “get Brexit done”. But as events this week have proved, the process is far from over. An argument with France over fishing rights around the island of Jersey rapidly descended into threats, blockades and the government sending in the navy.

The current dispute rests on differing interpretations of one part of the trade and cooperation agreement (TCA), the trade deal that now governs economic relations between the UK and the EU. While Jersey is not part of the UK and was never within the EU, the TCA replaced the Bay of Granville agreement, which used to govern fishing rights in Jersey’s waters.

France threatens to cut Jersey's electricity over post-Brexit fishing rights – video
Wed, 05 May 2021 11:09:06 GMT

The French maritime minister, Annick Girardin, warned on Tuesday that France could cut off electricity to the British island of Jersey in a dispute over fishing rights. The warning followed claims from Paris that Jersey was  stalling in issuing licences to French boats under the terms of the UK’s post-Brexit trade deal with the EU. 'The agreement provides for retaliatory measures and these measures of retaliation we are ready to use,' Girardin told French lawmakers.

Luis Suárez returns to Barcelona with tight La Liga race on the line
Fri, 07 May 2021 17:21:25 GMT

Atlético Madrid striker is back at the Camp Nou on Sunday and the stakes could scarcely be higher in a rollercoaster title battle

The last time Luis Suárez was on the pitch at the Camp Nou, one sunny afternoon in September last year, he stood alongside Lionel Messi, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto and Jordi Alba, the five of them surrounded by silverware: four league trophies, four cups, one European Cup, a Spanish Super Cup, a European Super Cup, and a Club World Cup. The next time he does should be a huge step towards another La Liga, just not for all of them.

On Saturday Suárez returns to the stage as an opponent, facing Barcelona for the first time since he was forced to leave and joined Atlético Madrid. He does so as their top scorer, on 19 league goals, and with Atlético top, where they have been for five months.

Lions squad brings skill to South Africa party – but past lessons must be learned | Ugo Monye
Fri, 07 May 2021 16:47:52 GMT

Warren Gatland’s selection will have been affected by the 2009 tour when we were not ready for the Springboks’ brutality

For those players selected in the British & Irish Lions squad on Wednesday, the tour starts this weekend. That’s how I felt when I was lucky enough to have my name read out in 2009; you feel a sense of wanting to prove you deserve your place and you are already thinking about pressing your claims for the Test team. I was up against Shane Williams who had been named World Player of the Year in 2008 so I knew I had my work cut out.

My first match after being selected was a European quarter-final against Leinster and my last was the Premiership semi-final against London Irish. I didn’t find this out for a while afterwards but my mum had a dream in the week that I broke my neck playing rugby. I went up for a high ball in the first 10 minutes and landed on my head – my mum was in the crowd at the time. I just remember thinking I couldn’t go off, I was desperate to help Harlequins to a final. The following Six Nations I was knocked unconscious and had to have a scan, and while I got the all clear for that they noticed I had a displaced disc in my neck that had been there for six months or so. Had I gone off against Irish I really don’t think I would have made the tour so it just goes to show, the fate of these players is the lap of the gods.

Derby and Sheffield Wednesday collide with League One drop looming
Fri, 07 May 2021 16:34:16 GMT

At least one of the of the famous old clubs will be relegated from the Championship after a match that will surely shape the managerial career of England’s leading goalscorer

“We won’t be in there [the relegation zone] at the end of the season,” Wayne Rooney said bullishly on Boxing Day and, with one seismic game against Sheffield Wednesday to go, it is time for his Derby players to prove him right. For Derby it is as simple as winner-takes-all but for Wednesday victory will not be enough to avoid relegation if Rotherham prevail at Cardiff. Saturday’s 90 minutes will surely shape Rooney’s nascent managerial career.

Either way, Rooney insists he is staying put after what he has labelled the most significant game of a football journey that has taken in World Cups and European finals. “Regardless of where we’re at, my future is with Derby County,” he says. “I’m never one to walk away from a challenge. I want to push this club forward. My plan for next season is to look at the squad, add players to the squad and push further up the league.”

Football fan protests are a positive, legitimate response to deeper discontent | Barney Ronay
Fri, 07 May 2021 15:59:59 GMT

The game is an echo box for wider anxieties, because it is the place people gather, because it gives a hook to our feelings

There was something touching on Thursday evening about the sight of Martin Keown standing on a windswept dais in front of an empty super-stadium trying to rationalise the dissolution, by various structural forces, of the entity previously known as “Arsenal Football Club”.

Keown might not always pronounce players’ names correctly, but he is a good pundit and a man of substance. He did his best to offer Arsenal fans comfort after the 0-0 draw with Villarreal, another game marked by protest outside the Emirates at the club’s distant ownership. Keown pointed out that change can come from inside. He remembered that Arsenal were also badly run in the 1980s – and that they fixed themselves then, when all this really involved was getting a couple of capable people in the boardroom and maybe doing up the training ground.

Dough to go: Rome’s first pizza vending machine gets mixed reviews

Tilray shares soar 10% premarket after Jefferies upgrades to buy, says Aphria merger 'the perfect match'
Fri, 07 May 2021 12:41:22 GMT

Jefferies upgraded shares of the new Tilray Inc. to buy from underperform on Friday, and said the recent merger of the company with rival Aphria Inc. was "the perfect match." Analyst Owen Bennett raised his price target to $23 from $4.77. "In Canada, a leading portfolio of brands, supported (by) an efficient cost structure," the analyst wrote in a note to clients. "In Europe, the market is now picking up, while Tilray's scale and Aphria's unique German positioning make it perfectly suited to succeed. And in the US, the combined company's broader consumer goods portfolio and strong balance sheet supports excellent optionality around both US THC and CBD." Bennett is expected pro-forma fiscal 2020 to fiscal 2024 combined sales growing 33% to leave fiscal 2024 sales at $1.7 billion, compared with average major Canadian licensed producers of $482 million and major U.S. multi-state operators of $1.6 billion. Tilray shares were up 10% premarket and have gained 71% in the year to date, while the Cannabis ETF has gained 36% and the S&P 500 has gained 11.9%.

Coronavirus tally: Global cases of COVID-19 top 156 million and India counts record of 414,000 new cases in a day
Fri, 07 May 2021 10:14:28 GMT

The global tally for the coronavirus-borne illness rose above 156 million on Friday, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University, while the death toll rose above 3.25 million. The U.S. continues to lead the world in cases and deaths by wide margins, with 32.6 million cases and 580,063 deaths, or about a fifth of the worldwide tallies. India is second to the U.S. by cases at 21.5 million and third by fatalities at 234,083. India added a record of 414,000 new cases in a 24-hour period, a fresh global record, and almost 4,000 deaths, according to its health ministry. Those numbers are widely held to be greatly undercounted given the stress on its healthcare system. Western countries have sent aid to help the nation of almost 1.4 billion's hospitals, which are short on oxygen and other lifesaving equipment and medicines. Brazil is third with 15 million cases and second by fatalities at 416,949. Mexico has the fourth-highest death toll at 218,173 and 2.4 million cases, or 15th highest tally. The U.K. has 4.4 million cases and 127,843 deaths, the fifth-highest in the world and highest in Europe.

Fenn, London SW6: ‘An elegant, date night kind of place’ – restaurant review | Grace Dent on restaurants
Fri, 07 May 2021 09:00:40 GMT

A bijou Fulham restaurant with a stylish setting and an imaginative, modern European menu

En route to Fenn in Fulham, I comforted myself that this may, please God, be one of the last restaurants I’ll visit during the alfresco period. We were ever so grateful when outdoor dining restored a semblance of semi-normality, but let’s be very honest, not one sane soul will pine for this season of swamped booking systems and damp bum cheeks.

I’ve accepted 3.45pm dinner bookings to eat under dripping tarpaulin, I’ve wangled my way into limited-menu brunches in repurposed loading bays and I’ve eaten pommes boulangère while dressed like Hagrid, with harsh, unforgiving daylight exposing the map of fine lines on my forehead, which I’d much prefer to hide in a flatteringly lit banquette.

The Labour MP Khalid Mahmood says his party has been taken over by “woke social media warriors”. In an article for Policy Exchange, a conservative thinktank, about why Labour lost Hartlepool he says:

My view is simple: in the past decade, Labour has lost touch with ordinary British people. A London-based bourgeoisie, with the support of brigades of woke social media warriors, has effectively captured the party. They mean well, of course, but their politics – obsessed with identity, division and even tech utopianism – have more in common with those of Californian high society than the kind of people who voted in Hartlepool yesterday. The loudest voices in the Labour movement over the past year in particular have focused more on pulling down Churchill’s statue than they have on helping people pull themselves up in the world. No wonder it is doing better among rich urban liberals and young university graduates than it is amongst the most important part of its traditional electoral coalition, the working-class.

I'm told by @khalid4PB that he left the Labour front bench four weeks ago, and it wasn't related to the issues he raises today https://t.co/k3rGFlWJry

Fri, 07 May 2021 17:30:27 GMT

Boris Johnson has been forced to discover and explain what he stands for. Keir Starmer cannot, and voters are unimpressed

One can read too much into the Conservative party’s astounding victory at the byelection in Hartlepool, a deprived port town seat in north-east England. But it is rare that a government wins such contests, especially when it has been in power for 11 years and when the seat had been the opposition’s for decades. Now the town with the highest unemployment rate in the country has a Tory MP. This makes for a significant moment. The result represents the first fruits of Boris Johnson’s political strategy, which rests on consolidating the 2016 leave vote and using the state to direct cash and jobs to the parts of “rust belt” England that voted overwhelmingly for Brexit.

Labour might argue that “Super Thursday” was about much more than a single constituency. Elsewhere, devolved and local governments were being chosen. Yet in Scotland, Labour is being steamrolled by the nationalists. The party is clinging on in Wales. But to win power it needs to be competitive in England. At the time of writing, English local government elections seem to point to a revival in voting for the Greens and Liberal Democrats, eating into Labour’s support. This spells real trouble for Sir Keir Starmer, who could be caught in a pincer movement, losing votes on the left and the right. There are about 20 or so “safe” Labour seats, including those of Ed Miliband and Yvette Cooper, where the combined 2019 Brexit and Tory party vote would easily overtake the sitting MP.

To win back working people, Labour should learn from Joe Biden | Jonathan Freedland
Fri, 07 May 2021 16:09:21 GMT

The US president has found the one thing divided parties of the left can agree on

A realignment is under way in British politics, and it is killing Labour. The Tories’ crushing win in Hartlepool, along with gains in English council seats that were once painted deepest red, is proof that Boris Johnson’s 2019 victory was no one-off, no aberration. Put simply, working people in towns across England that once saw voting Labour as a defining part of their identity are now voting Conservative – and they are doing so in big numbers.

An overused word, but the threat to Labour is existential. It cannot win and therefore cannot survive as a potential party of government by relying solely on those who are young, live in a city, have a university degree or are from an ethnic minority: there are just not enough of them. Labour needs the votes of the many millions of others still broadly defined as working class. The clue is in the party’s name. And yet look at Labour’s membership: 77% of them in social category ABC1, concentrated heavily in London and the south. One Labour MP says candidly: “There is a canyon between us and the working class.”

WHO grants emergency use to COVID-19 vaccine developed by China's Sinopharm
Fri, 07 May 2021 15:53:15 GMT

The World Health Organization said Friday it has listed the COVID-19 vaccine developed by China's Sinopharm for emergency use, allowing it to be rolled out across the world. The vaccine, which is made by Beijing Bio-Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China National Biotec Group, "has the potential to rapidly accelerate COVID-19 vaccine access for countries seeking to protect health workers and populations at risk," said Dr Mariângela Simão, WHO Assistant-Director General for Access to Health Products. Simão said the agency will encourage the manufacturer to participate in the WHO's Covax program, which aims to get vaccines to poorer countries, that are lagging in the global vaccine push due to a lack of supply. The WHO has already granted emergency use authorization to vaccines developed by Pfizer and German partner BioNTech , AstraZeneca , Serum Institute of India, J&J unit Janssen and Moderna . Earlier this week, Reuters reported that a document it had obtained suggested the WHO had "very low confidence" in data provided by Sinopharm on its COVID vaccine regarding the risk of serious side effects in some patients. On Friday, the WHO said its Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization, or SAGE, conducted on-site inspections at the production facility before reaching their decision. SAGE is recommending the vaccine for use in adults 18 years and older in a two-dose regimen, separated by three to four weeks. Vaccine efficacy for symptomatic and hospitalized disease was estimated to be 79%, all age groups combined.

In trouble from top to bottom: chaotic Arsenal are failing in all areas | Nick Ames
Fri, 07 May 2021 14:54:24 GMT

From the Kroenkes to the technical director, from Arteta to his squad, nobody is standing out as a high performer

Eleven hours and very possibly a sleepless night after the worst moment of his managerial career, Mikel Arteta was asked to rake back over the debris. Arsenal have been condemned to a year in the shadows and he was left to discuss why things have gone so badly wrong after, in his words, “investing every drop of energy emotionally” in a project whose credibility is teetering on the edge. “So far it has not been enough and this is when the question mark comes: why is it not enough?” Arteta said. “Is it just a thing? Is it the manager? Is it other stuff? What is it?”

Anybody capable of boiling that down to a single factor could probably earn themselves a pretty enough penny to help Daniel Ek force his bid to unseat the Kroenkes over the line. The problem is that, while fingers will flail everywhere in search of an answer to Arsenal’s decline, it is nigh on impossible to settle on a panacea. Arteta has by all measures that matter failed this season, but anyone believing their fortunes can be reversed by trading one piece of the puzzle would overlook the doubts coursing from top to bottom.

FDA advisory committee votes 10-8 in favor of ChemoCentryx's experimental drug; stock is down
Fri, 07 May 2021 14:14:59 GMT

Shares of ChemoCentryx Inc. tumbled 61.7% in trading on Friday, the day after a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee voted 10-8 that the benefits of the company's experimental autoimmune drug, avacopan, outweigh the risks. The mixed response from committee members followed critical words from the FDA earlier this week that had sent ChemoCentryx's stock diving. The company's stock this week was downgraded by Raymond James and Stifel Nicolaus, among others. Raymond James analyst Steven Seedhouse told investors that while he downgraded the stock to outperform, from strong buy, he still predicts a FDA approval by July 7 and a future blockbuster in avacopan, which is being evaluated as a treatment for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic auto-antibody-associated vasculitis. "We're actually not changing our unadjusted avacopan estimates (~$1.9B peak unadjusted U.S. sales), only our probability of success (now at 50% vs. 100% prior)," he wrote. "Yes, we're calling this a pure coin flip between now and July 7." ChemoCentryx's stock is down 54.4% for the year, while the broader S&P 500 is up 11.8%.

Pfizer and BioNTech start process of seeking full FDA approval of their COVID-19 vaccine
Fri, 07 May 2021 10:56:14 GMT

Pfizer Inc. and German partner BioNTech SE said Friday they have initiated rolling submission of a Biologics License Application (BLA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for full approval of their COVID-19 vaccine in individuals 16 years of age and older. The vaccine was already granted emergency use authorization last December, a measure used by the FDA in emergency situations. "Data to support the BLA will be submitted by the Companies to the FDA on a rolling basis over the coming weeks, with a request for Priority Review," the companies said in a joint statement. Since the vaccine was granted an EUA on Dec. 11, the companies have delivered more than 170 million doses across the U.S. Pfizer and BioNTech has also submitted an application to expand the EUA to include individuals aged 12-to-15 years-old, and plan to submit a supplemental BLA to support licensure of the vaccine in that age group once the required 6 months of data after a second dose are available. Pfizer shares rose 0.6% premarket, while BioNTech shares rose 4.3%. Those shares have climbed 106% in the year to date, while the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF has fallen 11% and the S&P 500 has gained 11.9%.

Masked campaign
Thu, 06 May 2021 12:32:00 +0200
Image:

Researchers take a group photo in front of the Air Zero G aircraft to mark the end of the 75th ESA parabolic flight campaign. The campaign was the third to take place under Covid-19 restrictions, and ran from 21 to 30 April in Bordeaux, France.

Participants and coordinators adjusted to a new way of flying: PCR tests were required to enter France, as well as rapid antigen or RT LAMP tests each day for every participant. Facilities on the ground as well as on board were adapted to allow for social distancing and cleanliness requirements. Surgical masks were worn at all times, and movement was restricted during the flights.

Otherwise, the parabolic flights were business-as-usual. Teams from various research institutes and universities performed experiments and technology demonstrations across many disciplines including complex fluidics, astronomical light scattering, protoplanetary agglomeration, and human physiology in altered states of gravity.

Initially used for training astronauts, parabolic flights are now mostly used for short-duration scientific and technological investigations in reduced gravity. These flights are the only way for humans to run tests in microgravity without going through lengthy astronaut-training and flights to the International Space Station.

To perform each parabola, the refitted A310 Air Zero G aircraft flies close to maximum speed and pulls the nose up to a 45° angle, then cuts the power to fall over the top of the curve. Whilst falling freely the passengers and experiments experience around 20 seconds of microgravity, until the plane is angled 45° nose-down, before pulling out of the dive to level off with normal flight.

These “pull up” and “pull out” manoeuvres before and after the weightless period increase gravity inside the plane up to 2g, but that is just part of the ride, repeated every three minutes for almost two hours.

A typical parabolic flight campaign involves three flights and requires a week of on-site preparation. Each flight offers 31 periods of weightlessness. The aircraft can also fly in arcs that provide lunar or martian gravity levels by adjusting the angle of attack of the wings.

Simplicity of preparation and operations, reduced cost, partial-gravity levels, multiple microgravity phases and opportunity for researchers to work directly on the experiments on board are some of the unique advantages..

Parabolic flights are organised by Novespace, which handles flight and ground operations. ESA, French space agency CNES, and German space agency DLR are the promoters and sponsors of the programme.

Details:

The new line of attacks exploits the micro-op cache: an on-chip structure that speeds up computing by storing simple commands and allowing the processor to fetch them quickly and early in the speculative execution process, as the team explains in a writeup from the University of Virginia. Even though the processor quickly realizes its mistake and does a U-turn to go down the right path, attackers can get at the private data while the processor is still heading in the wrong direction...

The fight for Hartlepool – podcast
Wed, 05 May 2021 02:00:01 GMT

Hartlepool has sent a Labour MP to parliament in every election since 1964. But as old allegiances fray, Anushka Asthana looks back at how this previously thriving shipbuilding town has lost out over successive governments and wonders if the ‘red wall’ seat could be about to go blue at tomorrow’s byelection

During the 2019 election campaign the formerly safe Labour seat of Hartlepool became the focus of a three-way fight. The Conservatives, who swept away much of Labour’s ‘red wall’ on election day, did not manage to take Hartlepool. Many of the voters it needed voted for the Brexit party instead and the town returned a Labour MP, as it had done in every election since 1964.

This time though, things could be different. With Brexit no longer a focal point, this is now a straight fight between Labour and the Conservatives – and according to recent polling it looks like it could be about to turn blue. Anushka Asthana visits Hartlepool to investigate why this formerly staunch Labour area appears to be falling out of love with the party. It’s a trend that is decades in the making as successive governments have failed to invest and renew the skills, infrastructure and key services in the town.

Identifying the Person Behind Bitcoin Fog
2021-05-03T14:36:33Z

The person behind the Bitcoin Fog was identified and arrested. Bitcoin Fog was an anonymization service: for a fee, it mixed a bunch of people’s bitcoins up so that it was hard to figure out where any individual coins came from. It ran for ten years.

Identifying the person behind Bitcoin Fog serves as an illustrative example of how hard it is to be anonymous online in the face of a competent police investigation:

Most remarkable, however, is the IRS’s account of tracking down Sterlingov using the very same sort of blockchain analysis that his own service was meant to defeat. The complaint outlines how Sterlingov allegedly paid for the server hosting of Bitcoin Fog at one point in 2011 using the now-defunct digital currency Liberty Reserve. It goes on to show the blockchain evidence that identifies Sterlingov’s purchase of that Liberty Reserve currency with bitcoins: He first exchanged euros for the bitcoins on the early cryptocurrency exchange Mt. Gox, then moved those bitcoins through several subsequent addresses, and finally traded them on another currency exchange for the Liberty Reserve funds he’d use to set up Bitcoin Fog’s domain...

Dragon fire
Thu, 29 Apr 2021 16:21:00 +0200
Image:

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Crew Dragon spits fire as it lifts off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, 23 April at 05:49 local time. On board are ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, NASA astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough, and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide.

The crew of four spent around 23 hours orbiting Earth and catching up with the International Space Station after their launch before docking to the Node-2 Harmony module, marking the start of ESA’s six-month mission Alpha.

Thomas is the first European to be launched to space on a US spacecraft in over a decade. The new Crew Dragon ships four astronauts at a time, allowing more people to live and work on the International Space Station doing more research for scientists on Earth.

Alpha is Thomas’ second space mission, and everything is set to be bigger and brighter. A Russian laboratory module, scheduled to arrive in the summer with a European robotic arm, will offer more ways of maintaining the International Space Station and supporting spacewalkers as they work outside. Thomas will help set up this arm and prepare it for use during the Alpha mission.

Over 200 international experiments are planned during Thomas’ time in space. Of the 40 European ones, 12 are new experiments led by the French space agency CNES.

At the end of the Alpha mission in October, Thomas will take over commander of the International Space Station for a brief period and welcome ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer on his first flight to space.

Latest updates on the Alpha mission can be found on Twitter @esaspaceflight, with more details on ESA’s exploration blog via thomaspesquet.esa.int.

A former heroin addict, he is pushing for drug reform in Scotland, which has a reported drug deaths rate 15 times higher than the European average. "People are dying out there,' says Krykant, who is able to treat addicts who overdose in his van. Could interventions such as his change Scotland's status as Europe's drug deaths capital?

Liftoff of the Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft with ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, NASA astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough, and Japanese astronaut Aki Hoshide. The Crew-2 spend around 24 hours travelling to the International Space Station. The rocket lifted off at 11:49 on 23 April 2021 from Launchpad 39A in Cape Canaveral at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.

Thomas is the first ESA astronaut to fly in space in a vehicle other than the Russian Soyuz or the US Space Shuttle, and the first ESA astronaut to leave Earth from Florida, USA, in over a decade. This is his second flight, his first mission called Proxima saw Thomas fly to the Space Station on a Soyuz from Baikonur in Kazakhstan and his Expedition broke records for amount of hours spent on research at the time.

Thomas’ second mission to the International Space Station is called Alpha. This is after Alpha Centauri, the closest stellar system to Earth, following the French tradition to name space missions after stars or constellations.

Over 200 experiments are planned during Thomas’s time in space, with 40 European ones and 12 new experiments led by France’s space agency CNES.

Interview with Frank De Winne on mission Alpha launch
Tue, 20 Apr 2021 15:00:00 +0200
Video: 00:02:29

ESA astronaut and ESA’s International Space Station programme manager Frank de Winne interviewed in Florida, USA, in the run-up to the launch of ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet on his Alpha mission.

Frank was the first European commander of the International Space Station and as ESA celebrates 20 years of Europeans visiting the orbital outpost it is fitting that Frank is in Florida to see Thomas off to space.

French ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet is returning to the International Space Station on his second spaceflight. Called ‘Alpha’ the mission will see a European astronaut launch on a US spacecraft for the first time in over a decade. Thomas is flying alongside NASA astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough and Japanese astronaut Aki Hoshide on the Crew Dragon.

Launching from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, Thomas will be the first ESA astronaut to fly on a vehicle other than the US Space Shuttle or Russian Soyuz.

But isn’t all wine ‘natural’? Seven myths about sustainable wine – busted
Mon, 29 Mar 2021 16:38:23 GMT

It might be grown from the earth and bottled in glass, but there are plenty of ways wine can be either more or less sustainable. From what ‘natural wine’ really means to the environmental impact of packaging, here are the facts

1 Wine is all ‘natural’ anyway … so what’s the problem?
Wine has a sense of romance that sets it apart from the likes of wheat, say, or potatoes, but it’s still an agricultural product that is, literally, rooted in the earth. The way a vineyard is managed matters every bit as much as with any other form of farming, and we can choose how “natural” its production is.

Consumers are confronted with a range of different options, but there are some key terms. “Organic” means the grapes are grown without the use of artificial pesticides, fungicides or herbicides, with certain additives also prohibited in the winery. To be sure your wine is organic, look for a logo indicating that it’s officially certified.

Dough to go: Rome’s first pizza vending machine gets mixed reviews

Massimo Bucolo bravely dared to go where nobody else had gone before in order to take a slice of Italy’s competitive pizza market: a 24-hour vending machine that dishes out freshly baked pizza in three minutes.

Located in a booth on Via Catania, close to Piazza Bologna in Rome, Mr Go Pizza offers up four varieties, including the classic margherita invented in Naples in 1889, each costing between €4.50 and €6. Customers can watch through a small glass window as the vending machine kneads and tops the dough.

SVB Leerink upgrades Epizyme, citing sales potential for lymphoma drug
Fri, 07 May 2021 12:44:29 GMT

Shares of Epizyme Inc. were up 11.0% in premarket trading on Friday after SVB Leerink upgraded the company's stock to outperform, from market perform, citing Tazverik's potential opportunity in the follicular lymphoma market. Analyst Andrew Berens told investors that the drug's potential as a "maintenance" therapy could represent a "significant upside to current valuation." (Maintenance treatments can be used to prevent relapses of some cancers.) Berens said he had previously estimated the drug could generate $252 million in sales in 2030; now he sees the potential for $854 million in sales, including sales from both treatment and maintenance prescriptions. The Food and Drug Administration approved Tazerik as a therapy for relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma in June of last year. Epizyme's stock is down 37.3% for the year, while the S&P 500 is up 11.8%.

How to eat: smoked salmon
Fri, 07 May 2021 11:00:33 GMT

Often of variable quality, is it really a headline attraction or best used as a cooking ingredient? Would you go paté, quiche or salad? And is mixing it through scrambled eggs positively Stalinesque?

How to Eat was 21 years old when it first encountered smoked salmon. Back in [DATE REDACTED] it was still a rarity, served, in this instance, as part of a baffling university buffet at an English department event for a visiting author. By the third year, the drill was familiar: sit in the pub until the talk finishes, slip in under cover of the concluding applause for free food, and, wait … what even is that?! It’s raw!

In the intervening decades, smoked salmon has escaped that ivory tower and now sits in every supermarket, a victory for the democratisation of experience, if not the quality of smoked salmon. Salmon consumption has tripled globally in the last 40 years. The vast majority of that salmon is farmed and some of it really isn’t very good. It also creates complex ecological issues that make it prudent to eat Britain’s most popular fish infrequently and to shop for salmon that is MSC-certified as sustainable.

Fenn, London SW6: ‘An elegant, date night kind of place’ – restaurant review | Grace Dent on restaurants

Billie Eilish is publishing her family photos: ‘It made me miss a lot of parts of my life’
Fri, 07 May 2021 15:54:36 GMT

Ahead of her new album, the singer is publishing her childhood snaps as a book, showing life before her rise to fame at just 14. Now 19, she says she ‘wouldn’t do it differently’

The small girl in the photo, sitting at a piano while singing into a toy microphone, could be any child. But she is Billie Eilish: one of the world’s biggest stars from the age of 14, famous for her dreamy and moody brand of pop, the singer of the next James Bond theme. Now just 19, she is on the precipice of launching her second album, Happier Than Ever, and fresh from relaunching herself; her bleached locks and vixenesque makeover on the cover of Vogue this week launched a thousand thinkpieces. But before the album, she is releasing a quieter project: a book of her family snaps that gives fans glimpses into her childhood, and non-fans a rather poignant insight into the strangeness of fame.

Eilish loves her family photo albums, but she won’t risk taking them on the road with her as “they are way too valuable,” she tells the Guardian. “I love going through them when I’m home though, I always make a point to sit and go through them every now and then.”

‘A dirty business’: how one drug is turning Syria into a narco-state
Fri, 07 May 2021 09:54:54 GMT

Manufacture of Captagon is a growth industry so big it is starting to rival GDP of flatlining economy

In the summer of 2015 a businessman in the Syrian province of Latakia was approached by a powerful security chief, seeking a favour. The official wanted the merchant, an importer of medical supplies, to source large amounts of a drug called fenethylline from abroad. The regime, he said, would readily buy the lot.

After an internet search, the merchant made a decision. He left his home that same week, first sending his wife and children to exile, then following after, scrounging what he could from his businesses for a new start. “I know what they were asking me to do,” he said from his new home in Paris. “They wanted the main ingredient for Captagon. And that drug is a dirty business.”

Fed's Bostic says too soon to be tapering asset purchases or for FOMC debate on issue
Thu, 06 May 2021 19:02:00 GMT

Atlanta Federal Reserve President Raphael Bostic on Thursday said it was too soon to be scaling back asset purchases or having the Fed's interest-rate committee formally discuss the issue at their next meeting in mid-June. In recent days, Dallas Fed President Rob Kaplan has called for a formal discussion of tapering of the Fed's $120 billion of asset purchases, but many other Fed officials have said such a conversation would be premature. "There is a lot of healing that would need to happen before I would want to start to be thinking about us having made substantial progress," which is the benchmark the Fed set for tapering, Bostic said, in comments to reporters after a speech at a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau conference. Bostic said each of the 18 top Fed officials are still making up their own minds about when to taper. "Right now, I'm not sure I am at a place where I would be wanting to force that conversation at a committee level," he said.

Residents angry after fire at east London high-rise with Grenfell-style panels

Blaze tore through flats at New Providence Wharf in Tower Hamlets on Friday morning

Residents of a high-rise block with Grenfell-style cladding in east London that caught fire causing multiple injuries have voiced anger at the government and the building’s developer that nothing was done to repair it sooner.

The fire broke out before 9am on Friday on the eighth floor of the 19-storey apartment building in the New Providence Wharf development in Poplar, which is clad partly in combustible aluminium panels similar to those that fuelled the fire at Grenfell Tower. It has not been fixed amid a wrangle over who should pay.

Body cams help hold police accountable. In LA, it can take a lawsuit to get footage
Fri, 07 May 2021 10:00:31 GMT

LAPD policies are among the most transparent in the US, but it remains difficult to obtain footage, advocates and attorneys say

Body-worn camera footage can be crucial in cases where police are accused of using excessive force – it helped a Minnesota jury understand the full details surrounding George Floyd’s death, and also shed light on the police killings of 13-year old Adam Toledo in Illinois and 16-year old Ma’khia Bryant in Ohio this spring.

In Los Angeles, advocates and attorneys say that despite the existence of a large scale body-worn camera program, it remains incredibly difficult to obtain police body-cam footage in the vast majority of cases and that even for police interventions that lead to serious injuries, it takes time, and effort to get access to all relevant images.

‘Like Uber, but for cremations’: I created a $2m funeral startup – and became a monster

The company I founded in my 20s exploited vulnerable people for profit. I was a merchant of death, and a charlatan

A few years ago I sat on the phone, as a first-time CEO of a funeral startup in my 20s, trying to convince a woman to buy a $1,799 necklace filled with her mother’s ashes.

“Well, Katherine. It’s really beautiful.” I paused for dramatic effect. “We take a charm that you like, let’s say a dove, or a cross – or maybe something that meant something to Marcella. And then we fill it with some of her ashes. Whenever you wear it, it’s like Marcella is with you … right next to your heart.”

Tesla Remotely Hacked from a Drone
2021-05-04T14:41:45Z

This is an impressive hack:

Security researchers Ralf-Philipp Weinmann of Kunnamon, Inc. and Benedikt Schmotzle of Comsecuris GmbH have found remote zero-click security vulnerabilities in an open-source software component (ConnMan) used in Tesla automobiles that allowed them to compromise parked cars and control their infotainment systems over WiFi. It would be possible for an attacker to unlock the doors and trunk, change seat positions, both steering and acceleration modes — in short, pretty much what a driver pressing various buttons on the console can do. This attack does not yield drive control of the car though...

Serious MacOS Vulnerability Patched
2021-04-30T12:38:22Z

Apple just patched a MacOS vulnerability that bypassed malware checks.

The flaw is akin to a front entrance that’s barred and bolted effectively, but with a cat door at the bottom that you can easily toss a bomb through. Apple mistakenly assumed that applications will always have certain specific attributes. Owens discovered that if he made an application that was really just a script—code that tells another program what do rather than doing it itself—and didn’t include a standard application metadata file called “info.plist,” he could silently run the app on any Mac. The operating system wouldn’t even give its most basic prompt: “This is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?”...
